
South Belfast to get new hotel and leisure development, while Ballymena gets bowling alley
The site for the new hotel is currently used as a surface level car park and retail and office unit.
Andras House acquired the site at Botanic Avenue in 2023 for £1.7m and last year it confirmed it is to develop a 164-room hotel for YOTEL, a London-based hotel firm. The project is estimated to be worth £17m.
The Planning Committee also approved an application for change of use from office space and storage at Adelaide Business Centre. It will become a leisure development with bowling alley, restaurant, indoor golf, children's soft play, VR zone and amusements, with parking at the site.
MK5 Ltd first unveiled plans for the leisure complex in 2022 after buying the Adelaide Business Centre on Apollo Road in Belfast for £1.35m.
MK5 is owned by Patrick Simpson, the developer behind Londonderry's Brunswick Moviebowl leisure complex.
Planning documents show that the estimated investment in the new project, in addition to the £1.35m to acquire the site, will be around £3m, with the businesses expected to create about 30 jobs.
Permission was also given for the erection of a drive through café at lands near Lidl supermarket and Olympia Leisure Centre on the Boucher Road.
Other applications approved were a council application for street art on the façade of the former Belfast Telegraph building in Royal Avenue at Donegall Street.
Councillor Ryan Murphy, Chair of Belfast City Council's Planning Committee, said: 'It's further good news for tourists and visitors to Belfast to have another major hotel development approved, this time — in the Botanic area.
'This new hotel will be close to shops, bars and restaurants and other local visitor attractions like Botanic Gardens and the Ulster Museum.
'It's also walking distance to the city centre and close to Botanic station which provides public transport links to the wider city and beyond including Lanyon Place and St George's Market and Titanic Quarter and SSE Arena and Titanic Belfast, among other great attractions.
'The Planning Committee also approved a new leisure complex on the Apollo Road, Boucher, with bowling alley, soft children's play area and indoor golf which is fantastic news for residents and families in the city.'
Meanwhile, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has granted planning permission for a new bowling alley at a cinema complex in Ballymena.
A proposal by applicant Carngore Ltd of Thomas Street, Ballymena, for renovations and an extension to the IMC Cinema to accommodate a 12-lane bowling alley and amusement centre has been given the go-ahead.
A planning report noted the premises at St Patrick's Link Road are located just outside Ballymena in 'an established leisure area' adjacent to the Seven Towers Leisure Centre.
The report said: 'The proposal is to change the use of two existing cinema rooms to provide an amusement area, further change of the existing lobby area and small extension to provide a bowling alley.
'Given the established leisure nature of the site and distance from any residential development, it is considered that there will be no impact on residential amenity or human health and well-being."
The report stated that NI Water has recommended refusal. However, there is no proposed change to the existing water and sewerage facilities.
'Given the extensive parking on-site and adjacent at Seven Towers Leisure Centre, there is no need for any additional parking or traffic assessments.' There is no amendment to the access, it was noted.

He boarded the Great Western Railway (GWR) Night Riviera, which departs from London Paddington and arrives in Penzance the following morning, with the total journey taking just over eight hours. However, one detail that caught his Instagram followers off guard was the cost. George booked a "very cosy" solo cabin on the train, equipped with a single bed, a table that doubled as a sink, a wardrobe, and under-bed storage, which he found "very useful". GWR also provided some amenities, including soap, reports Cornwall Live. Article continues below George pointed out that the toilets are located outside the cabins. But aside from that, he felt the train company "really had thought of everything else". The London-based content creator added: "Before we left London Paddington I had a look in the onboard bar where you can sit down, relax. "They also provide free tea and coffee with biscuits and when it comes to going to sleep, I actually had a really good experience." After getting settled and having a look around, George watched the train depart from the station before heading to bed. He revealed that he loved the sounds and motion of the train, as they lulled him to sleep. He chose a cup of tea and a sausage bap, commenting that it was "very delicious". The travel enthusiast added: "And it was so lovely to have my breakfast whilst watching the countryside whizz by." He concluded his Instagram reel by disclosing the cost of his journey and cabin, stating: "My ticket cost £119 and an additional £149 for the cabin." George believed it was "such a cool experience" falling asleep in London and awakening in Cornwall. He felt that it was "honestly so worth it" and something that he would certainly do again. The Instagram post has amassed an incredible one million views, thousands of likes and more than 400 comments. One user observed: "£75 return to Paris, just saying." George responded: "Totally get it. This was a bucket list trip." Another commented: "Looks fun but the price is insane." A third astonished viewer questioned: "Omg... how much?". Someone else even branded the price as "criminal." Despite the steep price, some viewers found positives, with one remarking: "This looks like a great experience but it's very costly for a return journey. Record salaries for UK chief executives as pay rises for third year in a row
The bosses of Britain's largest listed companies took home record high pay packets for the third successive year, according to a report. Analysis found that the record set in the last financial year means the average FTSE 100 chief executive is now paid 122 times the salary of the average full-time UK worker. Executive pay has been on the rise for the past four years, partly as a consequence of pay cuts taken during the pandemic, at a time when many households are still struggling with a cost of living crisis. The median pay of a FTSE chief executive climbed to £4.58m in the last financial year, up from £4.29m a year earlier, an increase of nearly 7%, according to analysis by the High Pay Centre. The thinktank report also shows FTSE 100 companies spent more than £1bn on pay during the last financial year, handed out to just 217 executives, representing an almost quarter of a billion pound increase from the same period a year earlier, when executive pay totalled £757m. Luke Hildyard, the director of the High Pay Centre, said: 'These figures will feed a growing sense that low and middle earners don't get a fair share of the wealth that their work helps to create, while those at the top take much more than they merit or need.' Much of the rise reflects pay awards at the UK engineering firm Melrose Industries, which was accused of 'robber baron capitalism' after it bought the aerospace and automotive group GKN for £8bn in a hostile takeover in 2018. Its executives were paid a total of £212m, according to the analysis. The High Pay Centre, which campaigns for fairer pay, found that the highest paid chief executives were the current and former boss of Melrose, Peter Dilnot and Simon Peckham respectively, who between them took home nearly £59m for the last financial year, mostly thanks to long-term incentive payments. Melrose sparked outrage last June by handing out a reward pot worth more than £175m to 21 current and former executives in shares under a bonus scheme set up in 2020. The lion's share was received by Peckham, one of the business's co-founders, along with the company's former chair Christopher Miller and the former finance director Geoffrey Martin. The use of long-term incentive payments (LTIPs) by large listed companies rose in the last financial year, with 84 out of 100 chief executives paid an LTIP in the last financial year, compared with 81% a year earlier. Pascal Soriot, the chief executive of pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, who spent the last two years as the FTSE 100's highest paid boss, was pushed into third place in the last financial year after earning £14.7m. Soriot is now ranked behind the Melrose executives as well as the current and former bosses of the education publisher Pearson on the High Pay Centre's league table. Andy Bird, Pearson's current chief executive, and his predecessor Omar Abbosh, together earned almost £19m in the last financial year. The number of FTSE 100 companies paying their leaders £10m or more increased in the past year, rising from 10 to 13, at a time when Britain's cash-strapped households continue to feel the squeeze of the cost of living crisis, and the Bank of England has warned that rising food prices could fuel further inflation. For the nine companies that had a female leader for the entire financial year, median chief executive pay was £3.27m, compared with £4.64m for companies run for the entire year by a man. The High Pay Centre believes that what it calls 'excessive spending' on top earnings by large listed companies often comes at the expense of pay increases for the rest of the workforce. The High Pay Centre is calling for reforms to regulations governing the pay-setting process followed by corporates, including the full implementation of Labour's employment rights bill, which includes measures that workers are informed by their employers of their trade union rights. In addition, the group is calling for more workers to have the power to elect directors to company boards, as well as the reform of corporate reporting on pay, through clearer information being set out in businesses' annual reports. 'The government now needs to make sure these measures are implemented in full, and supplemented by a real voice for elected worker directors in company boardrooms,' Hildyard said.

Rubbish collections delayed as binmen go on holiday
Rubbish collections are being delayed in London because of a staff shortage fuelled by binmen going on holiday. Ealing council has declared a driver shortage and admitted it could start paying the remaining workers more to fill the gap. The Labour-run authority said that although some staff were off sick, it expected the disruption to continue until September once holidays had finished. On Sunday night, the Government warned the council that taxpayers 'rightly expect and rely on' regular waste collections and that it must continue to provide the 'vital' service. Council tax bills went up across the borough in April, with charges increasing from £1,948 to £2,041 for the average Band D home. Those living in Band H homes, meanwhile, are now paying more than £4,000 in council tax. The disruption comes as residents of Birmingham wait for a resolution to a dispute between the binmen's union and the council which has seen rubbish piling up for six months. Ealing council said bin collection services were being deployed later than usual in a statement first issued to the Chiswick Calendar, a local news website. It added that any bins not collected on schedule would be prioritised the following day. A council spokesman said: 'We are sorry about the delays that are occurring to bin collections due to driver shortage and the impact it is having on residents. 'This is because a number of staff are currently off sick and, in addition, as it is the summer holiday period many staff are on leave, which we anticipate lasting until September when the holidays have finished.' The council said it was 'actively recruiting more staff' and that it employed a number of HGV drivers, who were 'highly sought after' by businesses that could offer them more money. 'This is an ongoing issue and we are reviewing salaries and other incentives for staff,' it added. Susan Hall, leader of the London Assembly Conservatives, said bins going uncollected across the capital was 'absolutely outrageous'. Ms Hall told The Telegraph: 'When you're paid to do a job, damn well do it and the people in charge of them, they need to be talked to as well. 'When you're running a company or a business, you have to make sure you've got a certain amount of staff in order to deliver the service you're providing. 'Just because these people work for a council, they assume they can do what they like. It's not good enough.' A spokesman for the Ealing Conservatives said: 'Ealing Council should have foreseen driver shortages over the summer. 'We are monitoring the situation carefully, as it's critical that waste is promptly collected over the hot period.' Earlier in the summer, residents in Croydon complained that their borough was filled with the 'persistent smell of decay' after waste management company Veolia failed to empty bins. Veolia was given a £21.5m eight-year contract by the local authority in April but there have been complaints of bins going uncollected for as long as seven weeks. The company apologised for having to re-route all kerbside collections, which it insisted would lead to 'more efficient' service in the long run but at the expense of short-term operations. Rowena Davies, the Labour mayoral candidate in Croydon, said the service being provided was 'so shockingly disappointing'. In Birmingham, rubbish continues to pile up as the dispute between the Unite trade union and the council in England's second city runs into a sixth month. Talks between Unite and the Labour-run council are deadlocked, with the local authority having paid £8m in agency costs to keep a skeleton bin service running. A Government spokesman said: 'Taxpayers rightly expect and rely on regular waste collections, and the government expects councils to continue providing this vital service to residents. 'Local communities deserve good public services which is why we've already made over £69 billion available this year to boost council finances, alongside more than £1bn for councils to improve recycling services. 'We will go further to reform the outdated funding system ensuring councils are funded fairly.'
