KU earns No. 2 seed in NCAA baseball regionals. Here's Jayhawks' game site & foe
Kansas baseball coach Dan Fitzgerald met with reporters on Monday, May 26, 2025 after the Jayhawks were accorded a No. 2 seed in the NCAA regionals. The Kansas Jayhawks baseball team is headed to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2014. Third-year coach Dan Fitzgerald's KU team finished as runner-up to West Virginia during the Big 12 regular season and lost in the semifinals of the conference's postseason tournament. On Monday the Jayhawks were assigned to a four-team regional in Arkansas as a No. 2 seed among the national field of 64. Advertisement KU will meet No. 3 seed Creighton (41-14) in a first-round regional contest at 7 p.m. Friday at Baum-Walker Field in Fayetteville, Ark. The other two teams in the double-elimination regional event are No. 1 seed Arkansas and North Dakota State. The Bison went 20-32 this season, winning the Summit League title. The Razorbacks (43-13) finished second in the SEC behind Texas. They're rated fifth in the latest Division I baseball rankings and hold the same spot in RPI. Creighton's Bluejays (41-14) are coming off a Big East tournament championship and have won seven games in a row. KU is ranked No. 25 nationally and No. 24 in the RPI. Advertisement Each regional will include four teams playing in a double-elimination format. The regionals will start Friday and Saturday and run through Monday, June 2, with the winners meeting in best-of-three NCAA Super Regionals the following week. Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced June 3. 'This is really special,' Fitzgerald said. 'To see the joy they (players) are having and for it to mean so much ... To be a 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament in year three and lead the Big 12 in wins, if someone told me that I would have taken it all day long and more. 'We have an awesome group of human beings in this program that care so much. We'll have a good practice today. They're ready.' Advertisement The coach had no complaints about where KU was sent and the opposition in the Fayetteville regional. 'You look through this tournament,' Fitzgerald said, 'and this is true of the NCAA tournament: There's never a regional where you're like, 'Oh, man, that's an easy one for so-and-so.' They're all tough.' Of KU's first-round foe, he said: 'Creighton has a really good team and is playing really good baseball.'

Newcomers out, or limited, for first Purdue basketball practice: 3 things we learned
WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue basketball big man Trey Kaufman-Renn looks up and down the roster and struggles to find a weakness for a preseason national championship favorite. He's eager to finally experience that much-anticipated squad in its complete form. Summer practice began Monday without two of the Boilermakers' biggest offseason additions. South Dakota State transfer center Oscar Cluff is waiting on his renewed visa to arrive so he can board a plane from Australia. He is expected in West Lafayette soon. Incoming freshman guard Omer Mayer remains overseas, as he will play with Team Israel at the FIBA Under-19 World Cup in Switzerland later this month. As a result, his own visa process is less time-urgent. Another incoming transfer, former North Florida forward Liam Murphy, participated in a limited capacity. Purdue coach Matt Painter said Murphy is not expected to be fully cleared from shoulder surgery until the fall. "It's going to take time to get people in different systems, especially the way that we play," Kaufman-Renn said. "We play a little bit differently than a lot of other teams, so it'll take time for it to be perfect. But from what I've heard, what I've seen as far as their film. I think they'll fit right in." Raleigh Burgess remains out after offseason leg surgery and may not participate this summer. The decision not to use a redshirt season with him last season drew the most attention because it came down to the start of the season. Last season's other redshirt decision will lead to a bigger role for Jack Benter. The Brownstown Central grad was somewhat out of sight, out of mind last season while sitting out. Now he'll fight to earn guard rotation minutes and can also play the 4 in smaller lineups. "He's got good length, good size," Painter said. "He can stretch the defense. He knows how to play." Painter called Monday's practice a "glorified pickup game." Yet it's an important first step for freshman guard Antione West Jr., the player with the steepest learning curve. That freshman initiation can be a tough process for those coming in with a big class. Coming in with a small one amplifies the corrective focus of the coaching staff. West was merely getting his feet wet Monday. The NCAA allows up to eight weeks of required summer activities. Of the eight allowed hours per week, no more than four can be spent on skill instruction such as drills and film sessions. The rest of the time can go toward weightlifting and conditioning.

Larson punches his ticket to Eugen
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS (SDSU) — Cody Larson will head to Eugene for South Dakota State, while the other 10 Jackrabbits wrap up their season Saturday afternoon at the NCAA West First Round. HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN 'Cody making nationals is an incredible achievement and kind of continues an almost magical season for him. And he's still got a little bit more left in the tank as we head to Eugene. I think it's a good experience for the other Jackrabbits that made the trip to College Station. It's sad to see the careers of some all-time greats come to a close, but I wish them the best in their future endeavors. For those that return next year, hopefully they're fueled to achieve greater heights.' THE MEET Cody Larson finished second in his heat of the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:39.60. Larson's placement as runner-up in his heat secured the junior a spot in the semifinals held in Eugene, OR. Josh Becker also competed in the 3000-steeplechase, but did not finish due to injury. Pierre Lear made his way to the quarterfinals after clocking 13.76 in the 110-hurdles. The senior finished 21st overall with a time of 14.40. Lear's performance in the quarterfinals was his final competition as a Jackrabbit. Lear will leave South Dakota State with a legacy as he currently holds the 110-hurdles program record at 13.57. In field events, Madison Kizer competed in the high jump on Saturday afternoon. Kizer cleared 5-07.25 (1.71m) to take 31st in the event. Kizer also finished her collegiate career, but will live on in SDSU history as the senior tied the program record of 5-10.75 earlier this season. Caiden Fredrick, Cayman Gebheim and Ethan Fischer all represented the Jackrabbits in the discus competition. Frederick placed 33rd with a mark of 179-03 (54.65m), Gebheim took 37th with a throw of 176-11 (53.92m), and Fischer finished at 45th with a mark of 164-6 (50.14m). Brielle Dixon rounded out her collegiate career Thursday evening. Dixon placed 36th in the first round of the 100-hurdles with a time of 13.58. Similarly to Lear, Dixon will leave the program with her name on the SDSU records list as she currently holds the best Jackrabbit 100-hurdles time of 13.37. Jessica Lutmer also finished her collegiate career Thursday night. Lutmer, alongside freshman Courtney Stadter, competed in the 10,000-meter race. Stadter took 36th in the event, crossing the line at 35:52.31, while Lutmer finished at 36:59.36 for 42nd. Grayson Ring competed at the NCAA West Regionals after his first year in DI competition.
