Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini's relationship ended because his family wanted her to quit films: ‘Desired a stay-at-home wife'
was one of Hindi cinema's finest actors, remembered for his powerful performances across a range of genres. But while he won hearts on screen, his personal life was filled with heartache.
Despite playing many romantic roles,
Sanjeev
never married, and passed away at just 47. Among the most talked-about chapters of his love life was his relationship with
Hema Malini
, which reportedly ended due to his conservative views on marriage.
Love sparked on the set of '
Seeta Aur Geeta
'
Their romance began in 1972 when they were shooting for 'Seeta Aur Geeta'. According to Hanif Zaveri and Sumant Batra in the book An Actor's Actor, 'Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini became acquainted with each other while shooting for the song 'Hawa Ke Saath Saath', in which they had to skate through the picturesque roads of Mahabaleshwar.'
Their bond grew stronger after a scary accident on set. The book says, 'In one terrifying moment, the trolley came loose while both Hema Malini and Sanjeev Kumar were on it, and veered towards a cliff. Luckily, the road bent inwards and both the actors fell away from the treacherous precipice. They escaped with minor cuts and bruises. This brush with death brought them closer. The moment they recovered from the accident, they were more concerned about each other than their own well-being.

Many believe that this was the moment they began developing feelings for each other.'
When wedding plans took shape
It didn't take long for things to move ahead. The book shares that, 'The Jariwals decided to visit Hema's family in Madras and ask for her hand. Sanjeev, Hema, and Shantaben planned the visit, fixed a date, and got their tickets. As was customary, Shantaben arrived at Hema's home with boxes of sweets, and Hema Malini's mother, Jaya Chakravarthy, was happy to meet Sanjeev's family.'
Everything seemed smooth at first.
The cultural differences did not become a problem. But soon, Hema's growing film career became a big hurdle.
The one condition that ended it all
Hema's mother Jaya Chakravarthy was ready for the proposal but had one clear condition. She said she would agree only if her daughter was allowed to keep working in films after marriage. The book notes, 'For the Jariwala family this was a difficult condition to accept.
Shantaben and Sanjeev were clear from the start that they would not allow Hema to act in films after marriage.'.
Neither would give in
Hema had hoped Sanjeev would change his mind and let her continue acting. On the other side, Sanjeev thought Hema would convince her mother to accept his family's wishes. In the end, neither was ready to give in. This difference tore them apart, and they decided to end their relationship.
Hema later spoke about Sanjeev's expectations
Years later, in 1991, Hema Malini opened up about this in Junior G magazine. She said, 'Sanjeev Kumar who desired a stay-at-home, all-sacrificing wife who would care for his ageing mother and support him, while he mesmerized the audience and won accolades, seems like a caricature of a male chauvinist. But before judging him too harshly, let's consider the era we are dealing with. Back in the day, it was common to look down upon women who chose to be a part of showbiz.
'
Hema later moved on and married
Dharmendra
in 1980. They went on to have two daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol. Meanwhile, Sanjeev Kumar never married.

Tom Holland takes cooking lessons from brother Sam to impress fiancée Zendaya
\When fiancée Zendaya is on set, Tom Holland alternates in the kitchen. To keep him from crashing and burning while attempting to put dinner on the table, his brother, Sam Holland, who is also a chef, has been giving him recipes. People report that 25-year-old Sam recently published his new cookbook, Kitchen Kickstart. Sam told The Times that while Zendaya was filming in Boston, he made sure his famous sister had some simple meals prepared. He took special care with the vegetarian options, knowing Zendaya follows a plant-based diet, and sent the recipes to Tom, who was handling dinner duties during her shoot. Sam said Tom went through each recipe and enjoyed them thoroughly. The culinary expertise of the Holland brothers Sam joked that even his own family can manage his cooking. He noted that Tom, his twin Harry, 26, and their younger brother Paddy, 20, are likely all just beginner-level cooks. Tom, however, isn't willing to give up the kitchen himself. On the Dish podcast with Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett last December, he shared that he enjoys cooking and has been exploring more vegetarian dishes, partly because his girlfriend follows a vegetarian diet. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Prestige White Meadows: Sky Villas in Whitefield Prestige White Meadows Learn More Undo While some meals did well, others didn't Tom explained that while Zendaya was working in Boston, he had been cooking most of the time. He clarified, however, that there are others who are capable of handling dinner duty. He described Zendaya's spicy vodka fusilli thingamajiggy as "delicious" and stated, "I actually love it." Coolie Hindi Box Office Day 6: Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj's film nets Rs 1.50 crore Tuesday, targets to wrap 1st week under Rs 25 crore
Coolie: The Powerhouse, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring Rajinikanth in the titular role, has started losing its grip at the Hindi box office. The movie, which started on an encouraging note, is now facing the wrath of mixed word-of-mouth. Coolie collects Rs 1.40 crore on Day 6; eyes to wrap extended week under Rs 25 crore Co-starring an ensemble star cast that includes Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, and Aamir Khan in cameo roles, the movie wrapped its opening weekend at Rs 18.50 crore in Hindi. It further recorded a massive drop of 70% on Monday over its first day and collected Rs 1.30 crore. According to estimates, Coolie minted another Rs 1.40 crore on Tuesday, remaining more or less stagnant, even on Discount Tuesday. A slightly muted response on Discount Tuesday can be due to the rains in Mumbai and other parts of India. The 6-day cume of Coolie: The Powerhouse is around Rs 21.20 crore net in Hindi. The movie is expected to wind its extended opening week around Rs 23 crore to Rs 24 crore net at the Hindi box office. The Rajinikanth starrer will have to show better trends in the second weekend to sail through a decent theatrical run. Based on current trends, the project is expected to finish between Rs 35 crore and Rs 40 crore. Day-wise box office collections of Coolie: The Powerhouse in Hindi: Coolie trails behind War 2 in the North markets, faces stiff competition from Mahavatar Narsimha The Lokesh Kanagaraj movie remained far behind War 2 only in the Hindi belt. It maintained a significant lead elsewhere, including the Telugu circuit. Coolie also faced stiff competition with the holdover release, Mahavatar Narsimha, which is still doing wonders at the box office in the 4th week. The animated movie collected Rs 18.15 crore during the four-day-long Independence Day weekend, against Coolie's Rs 18.50 crore. It's pretty clear how content transcends star power and what strong word-of-mouth can do! Coolie in cinemas Coolie is now playing in cinemas. War 2 Hindi Box Office Day 6: Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR's spy film adds Rs 7 crore on discounted Tuesday, crosses Rs 135 crore mark
War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji and starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani, continues to struggle at the box office. The movie has remained more or less stagnant on Tuesday over its disappointing first Monday, despite discounted ticket prices. War 2 nets Rs 7 crore on Day 6, likely to wrap under Ek Tha Tiger's lifetime earnings Bankrolled by Yash Raj Films, War 2 could add just Rs 7 crore net to the tally on its first Tuesday, following an underwhelming opening weekend of Rs 125 crore and a disappointing Monday of Rs 6.75 crore. The total cume of War 2 now stands at Rs 138.75 crore net at the Indian box office. The spy action drama led by two A-list stars of Hindi and Telugu cinema is expected to wind its extended opening week around Rs 148-150 crore net. The Hrithik-NTR film still has one week for a clean run as Maddock Films' Param Sundari is arriving on August 29 to grab most of the screens. Based on the current trends, the movie is expected to wrap its theatrical run under YRF Spy Universe's pioneer film, Ek Tha Tiger's lifetime earnings. This is a baffling result for such a well-budgeted 2025 movie release. The next film in the spy-verse is Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt, Sharvari, and Bobby Deol. Let's see whether Alpha can bring back the glory of the spy universe to YRF or not. The Day Wise Hindi Net Collection Of War 2 In India Is As Under War 2 in cinemas War 2 is now playing in cinemas.
