Spirit Awards: ‘How To Die Alone' Creator Natasha Rothwell Talks The Challenge Of Navigating 'Fairness' During 'A DEI Purge' And Celebrating Black Stories
Rothwell, who won the Independent Spirit Award for ensemble cast in a new scripted series, spoke to Deadline ahead of the event on the Indie Spirits red carpet about the challenge of finding a new home for the series. 'Right now in Hollywood, there's a DEI purge of programs, positions and projects. And I feel it's unfortunate that How to Die Alone was not able to survive that. It was worthy by all merits. It was a critical success and we had the numbers and more importantly, we were centering marginalized voices. We had representation on the stage. And that representation is being honored tonight. So it's exciting to see the show get that recognition in spite of the circumstances.'

In addition to the Indie Spirit win, the show also received two nominations at the NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Rothwell went on to talk about the importance of being Black and having resilience in the cutthroat industry. 'Nothing quite prepares you for these particular types of shenanigans than being a Black woman that walks through this world,' the writer-actor said. 'Fairness is not something that we're as familiar with in a lot of areas. So being disappointed, those are experiences that I've felt before, but none at this magnitude. I'm grateful for the Black love and support of people who've shown up and held me up in encouragement. It's just confidence in knowing that the work speaks for itself. And although its journey is not what I had anticipated, it exists and people can find it and the message will live on forever.'
Rothwell's next project will see her team up with TikTok's Tareasa 'Reesa Teesa' who went viral for sharing her true story about the wild dissolution of her marriage in 50 part videos that ranged from five to 10 minutes. 'I have so much stuff in store. That's the other silver lining when you're in a writer's room and in production for a TV show, your bandwidth is narrowed. So for the time being, I am able to entertain a lot of other projects.'

Chris Hemsworth Got Electrocuted And Pepper-Sprayed For His Disney+ Show, And I Didn't Expect To Relate To His Reasoning

Fans still have a while to go before seeing Chris Hemsworth rocking the hammer again in Thor-mode for the Russo brothers' Avengers: Doomsday, but there's no wait required to see the actor showing off his impressive badassery in other ways. The second season of his unscripted series LImitless, now subtitled Live Better Now, is finally available to stream via Hulu subscription and Disney+ subscription, nearly three years after the first season. I'm pretty sure Thor never had to deal with pepper spray or game night electrocutions, though. The second season of Limitless comprises three episodes of high-octane and high-intensity situations that do indeed test the limits of the human body in various ways, such as fear-abating cliff dives and playing drums in front of a screaming audience for the first time. For the episode 'Pain,' the Australian agreed to go through some minor electrocutions, as well as getting doused with pepper spray, and it's for a reason that I was surprised I could actually relate to: long-held chronic back pain. Speaking with TVInsider about that episode and others, Hemsworth was asked why he went through such terrible experiences, and he said it was all about trying to find a way to successfully fix or work around the constant back troubles, saying: Because I've struggled with issues with my back and back pain for years, since I was 15. And if someone was going to offer up a solution, I was onboard, whether or not it would mean I'd have to stimulate some more pain to get there. I'm now being a little gentle with myself and having more compassion for the pain and looking at it as, this is my body trying to protect me and saying, 'Hey, just go gentle today,' rather than what I had done for years, which was try and stifle that and compress it and remove it and avoid it and deny it. It's like listening to a whatever makes more sense. Having dealt with pinched nerves and muscle problems with my own back for decades, I can 100% sympathize with the decision to go far outside the box to find relief. In Hemsworth's, that box is full of Jenga pieces. In the episode, Hemsworth and his pals Aaron Grist and Luke Zocchi each get electrodes taped to their chests and stomachs, with a controlled set of shocks encompassing the first part of the process. Then things get more difficult as the mini-electrocutions are delivered as the guys engage in a social activity: playing Jenga! Not that all that much Jenga-playing happens, with each of the men laughing and reacting maniacally as they get jolted. One goal with these experiements is to see whethever or not a secondary form of pain can successfully get someone to refocus their receptors so that the initial pain isn't felt anymore. Kind of like how if you have a bad headache, stubbing the shit out of your toe on a bedframe can temporarily make said headache dissipate. Elsewhere in the episode, Hemsworth teams up with a special forces unit led by someone who, instead of being an expert on pain management, is more of a professional pain-deliverer. Perhaps the most bizzarely excrutiating part of the four-stage process involved everyone getting their faces awashed in pepper spray and then grouping up to pull 300-lb. tires by rope, all while the gases and fumes from flash grenades further impede their sight and breathing abilities. Everything the special forces unit went through sounded and looked like pure hell, and I don't think anyone should expect to see Chris Hemsworth making a repeat appearance. As he put it in the show: I've never been pepper-sprayed before, and...I don't wanna be pepper-sprayed again. For all the aches and pains that Hemsworth went through on Limitless, he actually wasn't allowed to attempt surfing a 40-foot wave as he'd aimed to, due to insurance issues with Disney, who didn't want him injuring himself before Thor's big return. Thankfully, the actor wasn't dealing with any such painful experiences with his family at the series' premiere event in July. All three episodes of LImitless are currently available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu. Watching the show hasn't exactly helped my own back problems, but certainly made me grateful about not suffering electrocution pains at the same time. It's the little things. Growing up, I didn't love books. Reading for fun seemed impossible. I would only read the books assigned in school, and even had to use Sparknotes to summarize the content I was reading. However, that all changed in the seventh grade when I decided to pick up The Hunger Games series. Curiously, I searched for a reading vlog video, and I've been hooked on reading ever since. As I became more interested in reading, that hobby quickly spread to my social media feed. I was getting recommendations from people on social media, especially BookTok. BookTok is a community of people where readers give their opinions and their predictions of their favorite books, authors, and genres. According to m, BookTok helped authors sell 20 million printed books in 2021 and again in 2022, with sales rising by another 50 percent afterward. Through BookTok, people connect, find new reads, and acclimate into a larger community. However, not everyone has a positive sentiment for BookTok. Critics of BookTok argue that BookTok functions as one major advertisement. Authors market their books. Readers create fan art and promote books, and even bookstores now display popular BookTok books on labeled shelves or tables. Another criticism of BookTok is the maturity level of some content. Inappropriate content can get on the feeds of young, impressionable audiences. An example of this is the book It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover. Some people found this book to be a romanticized exploration of very private, damaging themes, such as domestic abuse and toxic relationships. Even if Hoover never wanted this piece of writing to be as romanticized as it is, the misinterpretation of the audience is extremely harmful. Even though TikTok is marketed as being for ages 12+, many kids who are younger than 12 download the app and are exposed to this content. BookTok has changed the foundation of the publishing and writing industry. The sales of books have increased thanks to BookTok. According to The Universe , 'Young Adult Fiction genre saw a dramatic increase after 2020, and sales for Adult Fiction novels increased by 26% in 2021. Most notable was the increase in sales for romance novels, which was a staggering 52% from 2022 to 2023. Overall, the US print book market has grown by 9% as a result of BookTok's popularity.' The other pros of BookTok are that it gives lesser-known authors more credit and more of a platform to excel. These authors use TikTok as a form of advertising for their books, and can gain income on the side. Another aspect of BookTok is the community of people surrounding you. It truly feels like a huge book club. People are exposed to a diverse selection of creators, genres, and books. The diversity of BookTok allows people to find their next favorite read. While BookTok has its pros and cons, it has made a significant impact on the world of literature. It created a generation of readers who are more into, more curious, and more prepared to explore stories outside of their norms. Yes, there are valid apprehensions: the advertisements, content readiness, and exaggeration. However, that doesn't eliminate the fact that BookTok has helped many people discover a passion for reading they never knew existed. Personally, it transformed reading from an annoyance into a pleasure, and I'm not the only one. In a world where time on our phones often usurps reading time, anything that gets people happy about books again is worth it.
