Spirit Awards: ‘How To Die Alone' Creator Natasha Rothwell Talks The Challenge Of Navigating 'Fairness' During 'A DEI Purge' And Celebrating Black Stories
Despite a recent cancellation for Hulu comedy series How To Die Alone, the celebrations will not stop for creator and actor Nathasa Rothwell. The series followed Mel (Rothwell) a Black, plus sized and perpetually broke JFK airport employee who's never been in love and forgotten how to dream, until an accidental death scare challenges her to ignite her passions. Earlier this month, Hulu terminated the series after one season.
Rothwell, who won the Independent Spirit Award for ensemble cast in a new scripted series, spoke to Deadline ahead of the event on the Indie Spirits red carpet about the challenge of finding a new home for the series. 'Right now in Hollywood, there's a DEI purge of programs, positions and projects. And I feel it's unfortunate that How to Die Alone was not able to survive that. It was worthy by all merits. It was a critical success and we had the numbers and more importantly, we were centering marginalized voices. We had representation on the stage. And that representation is being honored tonight. So it's exciting to see the show get that recognition in spite of the circumstances.'

In addition to the Indie Spirit win, the show also received two nominations at the NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Rothwell went on to talk about the importance of being Black and having resilience in the cutthroat industry. 'Nothing quite prepares you for these particular types of shenanigans than being a Black woman that walks through this world,' the writer-actor said. 'Fairness is not something that we're as familiar with in a lot of areas. So being disappointed, those are experiences that I've felt before, but none at this magnitude. I'm grateful for the Black love and support of people who've shown up and held me up in encouragement. It's just confidence in knowing that the work speaks for itself. And although its journey is not what I had anticipated, it exists and people can find it and the message will live on forever.'
Rothwell's next project will see her team up with TikTok's Tareasa 'Reesa Teesa' who went viral for sharing her true story about the wild dissolution of her marriage in 50 part videos that ranged from five to 10 minutes. 'I have so much stuff in store. That's the other silver lining when you're in a writer's room and in production for a TV show, your bandwidth is narrowed. So for the time being, I am able to entertain a lot of other projects.'

Brian McKnight receives backlash for statement following estranged son's death
Brian McKnight addresses the narrative around his complex family dynamics and gives his side of the story. Brian McKnight has broken his silence following the death of his estranged son Niko McKnight, who died at 32 last week after a battle with cancer. However, the R&B singer's statement did not appear to hit the right note with fans. Tuesday evening, the 55-year-old singer took to Instagram to address his son's death and call out some of the narratives around his family dynamics being pushed by others online, in particular by his brother Claude McKnight, who was among the first to publicly announce Niko's death. 'A big big thanks to Claude McKnight's tasteless and self aggrandizing announcement on TikTok, that frankly was not his to make,' his lengthy post began both in the caption and as a voiceover in a video. 'In my opinion, he inserted himself and used Niko's death as an opportunity, instead of letting him pass with respect and dignity. It has instead turned into a circus, a mockery of a life now lost, making this tragedy into a reality show type drama.' After Niko died, McKnight said he and his family traveled to Maui to celebrate his life with a private memorial where they remembered 'all the good times' they shared. Then he recalled a not-so-rosy memory. 'The last time he and I spoke, we offered him all the help we could provide; we had the number one oncologist on deck for him and a team of specialists on standby with private care in our home. He and his mother declined,' McKnight claimed. 'The door of communication was open and remained open until his death.' The McKnight family's complex dynamics have been well known for years. In 2024, the singer made headlines when he referred to Niko and his siblings as 'products of sin' to justify distancing himself from his first four children upon remarrying. Niko, who was battling cancer at the time, pushed back against his father's statements on social media and highlighted past grievances and instances of hurt. His mother, McKnight's ex-wife, singer Julie McKnight, called the comments emotionally and mentally abusive. At the time, McKnight accused Julie of barring him from contributing to Niko's care, which she called a false narrative. Meanwhile, Niko posted on X that he just wanted to hear from his father during such a trying time. 'When I was about to die in the hospital from complications from my cancer, I just wanted to bury the hatchet and hear him say he loves me and he told me he couldn't arbitrarily tell me he loves me,' he posted. 'Still cuts so deep.' In his post on Tuesday, McKnight doubled down that he was denied the ability to help his son. 'To the self-proclaimed 'mama bear, ' may God have mercy on your soul for not allowing him to accept that help and not allowing him to use that line of communication,' he continued. 'There is great comfort in knowing God knows the TRUTH and the totality of the WHOLE story. I am truly thankful for the immense peace God has given me. I've left everything in HIS hands. I have a clear conscience. The only judgment that matters is God's.' Comments have been turned off on the post, though that hasn't stopped many from expressing their thoughts on the fraught statement. Many social media users have been calling out the statement for being more about McKnight than the actual tragedy, for putting down a mother mourning her son, and more. 'For everyone saying that we don't know the whole story, that's not the point,' wrote a user on Threads. 'The point is, his son just died of cancer, and he used this video to talk about himself and take shots at people – rather than expressing grief and celebrating his life. This video is literally about him, not Niko.' A user on X added, '…if you are speaking poorly on the mother of your child and blaming everyone else but yourself while your late son isn't even buried in the ground yet, I am wishing you the worst!' McKnight is a father of eight, including his biological and stepchildren. After sharing Brian Jr. and Niko with his ex-wife Julie, he also has a daughter, Briana McKnight, and another son, Clyde McKnight, from other past relationships. In 2017, he remarried to Dr. Leilani Malia Mendoza and has welcomed a son together in January 2023 named Brian Kainoa Makoa McKnight Jr. (The singer changed his legal name to match that of his most recent son.) The couple, unfortunately, experienced the loss of a child in infancy, and he is stepfather to Mendoza's two children from a previous relationship. Kris Jenner commented after Kylie Jenner revealed the plastic surgeon behind her breast augmentation. Earlier this week, Kylie surprised many by responding to a TikTok and revealing the exact procedure and doctor (Garth Fisher) she had. Kylie has been open about having had at least one boob job when she was 19, which she has since expressed regret about. Perhaps the reveal of Garth is unsurprising, given that he refers to himself as "The Kardashian Family Plastic Surgeon" on his website (he also did Kourtney's breast augmentation). Indeed, the site reads, "The Kardashian family likes to work with Dr. Fisher for his caring attention and outstanding, red carpet ready results." However, Garth still took to Instagram to write, "I'm honored to be acknowledged by Kylie—her kind words were unexpected but truly appreciated. You did my first facelift in 2011… 14 years ago!!! and made it the most amazing experience ever and even gave us access to film so that others could get a peek inside what it's like and not be afraid… you have taken great care of us always and remain such a close and treasured friend!! Such an incredible talent!! ❤️🙏🏼." First facelift. Here's the thing: I don't think the Kar-Jenners really ever do something out of the pure kindness of their hearts. They've lied and obfuscated about the cosmetic work they've had done in the past. Which makes me think their sudden candor is a sign of something else being afoot. We'll probably have to tune into season 1 million of The Kardashians to get clarity on that one.

‘The White Lotus' Stars Walton Goggins And Aimee Lou Wood Reveal The Truth Behind Instagram ‘Feud'
Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins Rick and Chelsea, the tragic lovers from the third season of HBO's The White Lotus, were fan favorites during the show's run earlier this year. The actors who played them also became the center of much gossip after the season came to a close. This was partly due to comments made by Jason Isaac, who played troubled investment banker Timothy Ratliff, in the third season. The cast lived on-set in Thailand for months during the shoot, and Isaac said that tensions could sometimes run high, noting that there were 'fewer deaths but just as much drama' behind the scenes. Rumors of a split between Walton Goggins, who played Rick, and Aimee Lou Wood, who played Chelsea, reached fever pitch when fans noticed that Goggins had unfollowed his co-star on Instagram. Fandom is always thirsty for this kind of drama, but perhaps especially so for a series like The White Lotus, which is all about scandal, betrayal and the woes of the rich and famous. There was blood in the water, and the sharks came circling. Goggins also didn't join his fellow cast members at the finale event, watching it alone instead, though he was in New York for a late-night appearance at the time. I never commented on these rumors. Tawdry gossip has never been something I feel the need or desire to comment on. Gossip journalism is certainly big business, but it's not my cup of tea. I am happy, however, to report on the outcome. In a lengthy interview with the two co-stars over at Variety, they clear the air and put the rumors to bed once and for all. After a discussion of the infamous SNL sketch that mocked Wood's appearance, and Goggins' regret at posting about it on social media, they clear the air. From the interview: He also addressed the NYT interview in which he refused to answer multiple questions about the supposed feud, saying he wouldn't answer them without Wood present. When Wood is asked about the Instagram unfollowing she replies: Goggins makes it clear that saying farewell to co-stars is just part of his process. When he left the show Justified "I went up to Tim [Olyphant], and I hugged him and I said, 'I love you, and I hope I see you in rooms for the rest of my life. I didn't talk to him for almost two years. I've done that with every single thing that I've done.' He continues: It's all part of his 'catharsis' according to Goggins. He would have done the same thing if he'd been following Olyphant or his The Shield co-star Michael Chiklis on Instagram at the time. Still, during the interview he gets up, grabs his phone and follows Wood on Instagram. 'It's all so ridiculou. It's just a part of me just saying goodbye to this character so that now Aimee and I will be friends for *#$&ing ever.' Read the full interview at Variety.
