Ex-Project star Em Rusciano slams show over segment: ‘Frankly dehumanising'

News.com.au28-05-2025
Former Project panellist Em Rusciano has publicly lambasted her former employer over what she branded a 'frankly dehumanising' segment which aired on the show recently.
Rusciano, 46, was incensed with a segment about the overprescription of medication to treat ADHD – a condition she herself was diagnosed with four years ago.
The Project hosts spoke to Professor Ian Hickie, co-director of the University of Sydney's Brain and Mind Centre, who claimed that 'we should really worry about inappropriate prescribing'.
'There's quite high figures and the figures have been going up, particularly in teenagers in Australia,' he warned.
'So, there's a real concern about the appropriateness – who's getting medications? Are they the kids in most need, and are they having the desired effect in educational and behavioural outcomes?'
Rusciano, who was a regular panellist on the show between 2011 and 2022, took issue with his claims, posting an angry reaction to her 240,000-plus Instagram followers.
'Why does The Project continue to target the ND (neuro-divergent) community with these s***house, clickbait, and frankly dehumanising segments,' she wrote over a screenshot of the interview.
'Actually, get f***ed.'
It's not the first time Rusciano has publicly criticised her former workplace.
Back in 2023, amid a furore over a controversial Jesus joke by Reuben Kaye, she accused Network Ten of having 'thrown' their guest 'under the bus'.
The queer comic, appearing as a guest on The Project in late February, spoke about the hate he had received for his sexuality and for dressing up in drag – particularly from the Christian community – before making the X-rated remark.
'I love Jesus, I love any man who can get nailed for three days straight and come back for more,' Kaye quipped on Tuesday night, prompting a stunned reaction from host Waleed Aly and a giggle from co-host Sarah Harris.
The pair issued a grovelling on-air apology to their viewers the following day.
But Rusciano took to Twitter in the aftermath to criticise the network for its handling of the issue.
'I find it pretty hard to believe that (Reuben Kaye)'s joke that stopped a nation wasn't script approved,' she tweeted.
'I've worked on The Project – VERY little is off the cuff! A tiny, tiny amount. They've flat out thrown him under the bus (in my opinion). Sorry, but someone had to say it.'
Rusciano, 44, followed up with another tweet in support of Kaye.
'They honestly don't deserve him and his talent. I dunno if Australia deserves him! In the end, we always seem to champion the non-threatening and the mediocre.'

‘Beyond our control': Sydney's The Old Manly Boatshed to close in September

Beloved Sydney music venue and pub The Old Manly Boatshed is closing down. The venue will close its doors in mid-September, owner Goff Burgess revealed late on Thursday night, ending a 38-year run for the longstanding institution. 'Due to circumstances beyond our control, it is with deep sadness and regret that after 38 years of continuous live entertainment, music, dancing, comedy, restaurant and bar, our beloved venue is being forced to close its doors,' Mr Burgess said. The venue sits between the Manly Wharf ferry stop and Manly Beach on The Corso strip. 'From its beginnings as a restaurant, bar and live music venue on Darley Road, to the digging of the tunnel to create what we know today, the Old Manly Boatshed has grown into Australia's longest-running live music and comedy venue,' Mr Burgess said. 'The Boaty has echoed with the sounds of laughter and live comedy, the pulse of live music, the voices of would-be entertainers and live band karaoke, plus the stories of thousands who have found their way through these porthole doors and navigated their way down the iconic stairway into the beating heart of entertainment in Manly. 'To say this is a shock is a total understatement. While it's hard to imagine Manly without The Boaty, what remains is the legacy we've built together.' Hundreds of punters have taken to social media to express their shock and sadness at the news. 'The Boatshed is such a Manly institution, it's so sad to see it go,' one wrote. 'One of the only remaining venues that had a soul and has not been gentrified. That's why we all loved it. Such a leveller and patrons from all ages.' Another said while it was a 'very sad day', there was a lot to be 'acknowledged and celebrated'. 'Throughout the 38 years, the Boatshed has been a constant supporter of breaking bands and upcoming musicians,' they said. 'Many of Australia's finest musicians have graced the Boatshed stage and for many starting out, Goff and the Boatshed's support was integral to them being able to make a career of it all. 'Goff and The Old Manly Boatshed over many, many years has made an immeasurable contribution to the Australian music industry and deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated for it. On ya Goffie.' The Boatshed's closure follows a string of live venue closures across Sydney and Australia, as the pub and music industry struggles to recover from Covid and cost-of-living shocks. Research from comparison website Finder revealed a dramatic spending slump on artistic experiences in 2024. Some 24 per cent of Australians have avoided live theatre, the data shows, while 36 per cent have passed up a concert, 27 per cent have skipped a music festival and 22 per cent have missed a comedy show.

Bunnings' viral $5.50 cap becomes ‘hottest hat of the summer'

A brand new $5.50 item from one of Australia's biggest retailers has taken social media by storm, with shoppers declaring they are 'low-key obsessed' with the latest merchandise offering. Bunnings Warehouse initially created a branded cap to celebrate its partnership with Channel 9 renovation show The Block. It proved to be so popular that the Aussie hardware giant decided to role out the $5.50 cap nationwide. The vintage-looking hat, which is available in black and beige with the store's logo, has since gone viral on social media and people are rushing into stores to snap one up. It's already been referred to online as the 'hat of the summer'. TikTok user @nicola_elizzabeth was one of the women to rave about the item, saying: 'Did Bunnings just drop the hottest hat this summer?' Brooke Martin also managed to snag one of the caps. 'Guys, look what I just got from Bunnings. It's actually gorge. Like, what do you mean,' she said. 'This is going to be the hat of the summer.' Fellow social media users were equally in awe of the trendy Bunnings merchandise. 'The PRICE is insane, $5.50 for such a cute hat!!! In this economy,' one social media user commented. Another said: 'Guys stop engaging on this post, I've sent hubby on a mission and don't want them selling out before he gets me one.' 'Got one two weeks ago and told my partner it was cool, he rolled his eyes. I knew it was cool,' one commented. Someone else wrote: 'Buying for hubby and I immediately.' 'I got the beige one. I feel really targeted being a beige person,' another commented about the merch. Someone else added: 'Immediately influenced! Click and collect placed.' 'I saw this at Bunnings the other day and they instantly caught my eye! I tried it on and my husband was like why the he'll would you want a Bunnings hat,' one said. Another social media user commented: 'Guys there's a whole merch isle at my local Bunnings for years. I noticed the cap yesterday but I thought this was common knowledge. They even have pencil cases that they give out to kids once in a while. Good quality too.' 'I went the other day just to buy the little buckets, now I have to go back,' another added. One said: 'My brother is currently rocking this cap all through Europe.' 'I got it too!!!! I'm low-key obsessed with it,' one said. Justine Mills, Bunnings' general manager of marketing, told the brand was 'blown away' by the response to the caps. 'What started as a fun addition to our merchandise range for The Block contestants has quickly become a viral favourite,' she said. 'They're great quality at just $5.50 each, and it's great to see that a simple wardrobe staple can resonate with so many of our customers.' It's not the first piece of merchandise from the DIY chain that has sent social media users in a tailspin recently — the mini buckets had a similar impact when they were released last week. The mini $1 bucket is a tiny version of the brand's popular 10 litre and 20 litre buckets. A clip showed the 600ml bucket being used for all sorts of things, such as storing loose nails, pots for small plants and storing painting accessories. Social media users were quick to lose their minds over the mini version of the 10 litre bucket. 'I want a mini Bunnings bucket for absolutely no reason,' one social media user commented. One said: 'All I'm thinking is a 'bring anything but a cup party'.' 'I'm getting one as a handbag, does it fit a phone,' one person asked. Another said: 'I didn't think a bucket from Bunnings could be cute but there it is being all cutesy.' 'It's a pint! Coincidence, luck or genius. Bunnings this could be the next glass Vegemite jar. Is it dishwasher safe,' one asked. Another social media user commented: 'How cute I would make hampers of them and gift them for gifts.' 'When you have a Bunnings two minutes up the road … going to get three right now,' another fan wrote. added. While one lamented: 'Can't find one in any store within 250km from my house and can't order online.'
