Liudmila Samsonova saved two match points before beating third-ranked Jessica Pegula 6–7 (8), 7–5, 7–6 (5) on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Berlin Open.
The 20th-ranked Samsonova recorded 18 aces against the defending champion in a match that lasted 3 hours 21 minutes at the grass-court tournament. 'I can't believe that I am here standing. It's incredible,' Samsonova said in her on-court interview. 'Maybe with the adrenaline right now I'm OK, but I think later it's not going to be so OK.'
Samsonova, who beat Naomi Osaka in three sets Tuesday, saved two match points on her serve at 5–4 in the deciding set against Pegula.
Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka's match against qualifier Rebeka Masarova was suspended overnight because the court became slippery. Play was halted after Sabalenka won the first set 6–2.
Earlier, Ons Jabeur beat the fourth-seeded Jasmine Paolini 6–1, 6–3 in the second round. Paolini was runner-up at Wimbledon last year. Jabeur was a Wimbledon finalist in 2022 and 2023. Paolini was playing for the first time since winning the French Open doubles title with fellow Italian Sara Errani. Paolini lost to Elina Svitolina in the fourth round of the French Open singles.

Chelsea Winger Mykhailo Mudryk Faces an FA Charge in a Doping Case

Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been formally charged with doping violations, England's Football Association said Wednesday. Mudryk, who became one of Chelsea's biggest signings when he arrived for $108 million in 2023, hasn't played since it emerged in December that he was facing a doping investigation. This latest step brings the Ukraine international closer to a ban, which would follow a hearing. 'We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with Anti-Doping Rule Violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance in terms of Regulations 3 and 4 of The FA's Anti-Doping Regulations,' the FA said in an emailed statement. 'As this is an ongoing case, we are not in a position to comment further at this time.' Mudryk has previously denied wrongdoing. 'I know that I haven't done anything wrong and remain hopeful that I will be back on the pitch soon,' he wrote in a statement on social media in December. Mudryk was spotted in public last month when he posed with fans ahead of Chelsea's Conference League final win over Real Betis in Poland.

Zverev Steps In After an Advertising Board Lands on a Spectator at Halle

Alexander Zverev and an umpire helped out with ice after a spectator was struck by a falling advertising board during his match at the Halle grass-court tournament Wednesday. The board fell from the upper tier of the stadium into the crowd on the lower tier and struck a female spectator, organizers said, adding that Zverev and umpire Renaud Lichtenstein rushed over with ice to treat her. 'Something like this has never happened in the 32-year history of our tournament. We deeply regret the incident,' tournament director Ralf Weber told German news agency dpa, which reported that Weber had given the spectator a free pass for next year's tournament. She was taken to a hospital as a precaution but did not appear to be badly hurt, dpa reported. It didn't stop Zverev from racing to a 6–1, 6–2 win over American Marcos Giron in the first round of the tournament, a warm-up for Wimbledon. It continued the German player's strong form on grass after he was the runner-up in Stuttgart last week. Also Wednesday at Halle, third-seeded Daniil Medvedev won 6–2, 7–5 over Quentin Halys, and eighth-seeded Karen Khachanov won 7–5, 6–3 against Zizou Bergs in the first round.
