China stocks close at highest level since 2021
The Shanghai Composite index climbed 0.2% to 3,639.67, the highest such close since December 2021. The blue-chip CSI300 index was little changed.
China's exports beat forecasts in July with outbound shipments up 7.2% year-on-year, customs data showed, as manufacturers made the most of a tariff truce with the United States.
Markets largely looked past US President Donald Trump's comments on Wednesday that he could announce further tariffs on China similar to the additional 25% duty imposed on imports of Indian goods over its Russian oil purchases, depending on what happens.
Investors remain focused on an August 12 deadline to see if Beijing and Washington will reach a durable tariff agreement.
'The upward trend is still intact,' analysts at Pacific Securities said in a note, adding markets remain optimistic about US-China trade talks while technical indicators continue to show bullish momentum.
Leading onshore gains on Thursday, the rare earth sector rallied 3.2% to near a three-year high. The energy sector added 0.8% and banking index gained 0.4%.
The semiconductor sector gave up initial gains to close largely flat after Trump said the US could levy a 100% tariff on some chip imports.
In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index reversed earlier losses with a 0.7% gain, and the tech index added 0.3%.
Local developers jumped 2.5% as New World Development surged as much as 20% on a report of talks that could potentially take it private.

The premier reaffirmed that it has always been a matter of duty for the people of Pakistan to extend their support to their Azerbaijani brothers and sisters on the core issue of Karabakh and it was heartening to note that, under President Aliyev's bold leadership and statesmanship, peace had finally been established in this region. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a US-brokered peace agreement on Friday during a meeting with Trump that would boost bilateral economic ties after decades of conflict and move them toward a full normalisation of their relations. 'It's a long time — 35 years — they fought and now they're friends, and they're going to be friends for a long time,' Trump said at a signing ceremony at the White House, where he was flanked by Azerbaijani President Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at odds since the late 1980s when Nagorno-Karabakh, a mountainous Azerbaijani region mostly populated by ethnic Armenians, broke away from Azerbaijan with support from Armenia. Azerbaijan took back full control of the region in 2023, prompting almost all of the territory's 100,000 ethnic Armenians to flee to Armenia. Pakistan had welcomed the historic peace agreement signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which was finalised at a White House Summit under the auspices of US President Trump. While thanking Shehbaz, Aliyev said that peaceful development in the region would create new opportunities for enhanced connectivity between Pakistan and Central Asia. During their cordial conversation, the two leaders also expressed their satisfaction on the positive trajectory of their bilateral cooperation. The prime minister lauded the visionary role of President Aliyev in bringing the three decades-old conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia to a peaceful and mutually beneficial end especially as it would usher in a new era of prosperity for the Caucuses. He particularly appreciated the role played by US President Donald Trump in facilitating this historic deal that, he said, would now bring peace and prosperity to the region. Lauding Trump as a peace maker across the globe, the prime minister mentioned that the US president played a positive role in ending the recent Indo-Pak war as well. While recalling their recent interactions in Lachin and Khankendi, PM Shehbaz reiterated his invitation to President Aliyev to undertake an official visit to Pakistan soon. Both leaders are also expected to meet in Tianjin on the margins of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

Yuyuan Tantian flags security, tech and environmental concerns in Nvidia H20 chip

The account, Yuyuan Tantian, published an article on WeChat saying the H20 chips were neither technologically advanced nor environmentally friendly. 'When a type of chip is neither environmentally friendly, nor advanced, nor safe, as consumers, we certainly have the option not to buy it,' the article concluded. The H20 chips were developed by Nvidia for the Chinese market after the US imposed export restrictions on advanced AI chips in late 2023. The administration of US President Donald Trump banned their sales in April amid escalating trade tensions with China, but reversed the ban in July. China's cyberspace watchdog said on July 31 that it had summoned Nvidia to a meeting to ask whether the H20 chips contained any backdoor security risks — a hidden method of bypassing normal authentication or security controls. Nvidia later said its products had no 'backdoors' that would allow remote access or control. In its article, Yuyuan Tantian claimed Nvidia chips could perform functions including 'remote shutdown' through a hardware 'backdoor'. The account's comments followed criticism of Nvidia by People's Daily, which in a commentary this month said Nvidia must produce 'convincing security proofs' to ease Chinese users' concerns and regain market trust.

China wants US to relax AI chip-export controls for trade deal, FT reports
China wants the United States to ease export controls on chips critical for artificial intelligence as part of a trade deal before a possible summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, the Financial Times reported on Sunday. Chinese officials have told experts in Washington that Beijing wants the Trump administration to relax export restrictions on high-bandwidth memory chips, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. The White House, State Department and China's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the report. HBM chips, which help perform data-intensive AI tasks quickly, are closely watched by investors due to their use alongside AI graphic processors, particularly Nvidia's. The FT said China is concerned because the U.S. HBM controls hamper the ability of Chinese companies such as Huawei to develop their own AI chips. Successive U.S. administrations have curbed exports of advanced chips to China, looking to stymie Beijing's AI and defence development. While this has impacted US firms' ability to fully address booming demand from China, one of the world's largest semiconductor markets, it still remains an important revenue driver for American chipmakers.
