Scott Bessent says Jerome Powell should leave Fed board in May '26
Treasury Secretary
Scott Bessent suggested that
Federal Reserve
Chair
Jerome Powell
should step down from the central bank's board when his term as chair is up in May 2026.
"Traditionally, the Fed chair also steps down as a governor," Bessent said in an interview with Bloomberg Television Tuesday. "There's been a lot of talk of a shadow Fed chair causing confusion in advance of his or her nomination. And I can tell you, I think it'd be very confusing for the market for a former Fed chair to stay on also."
Powell's term as a Fed governor doesn't end until January 2028, leaving it possible for him to remain at the central bank - and to participate in monetary policymaking - even after his tenure as the chair comes up next May. Powell has repeatedly declined to answer questions on whether he might stay on as a governor. That reticence has complicated the decision-making for President
Donald Trump
and his aides as they look to revamp Fed leadership next year.

"There's a formal process that's already starting" with regard to identifying the nominee to become next Fed chair, Bessent also said. "There are a lot of good candidates inside and outside the Federal Reserve."
Asked whether Trump has asked Bessent himself to serve as Fed chair, the Treasury chief said, "I am part of the decision-making process." He noted that "it's President Trump's decision, and it will move at his speed."
Live Events
Treasuries dropped after Bessent's remarks, with two-year yields hitting a session high of 3.92%. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index pared losses and was little changed as of 7:55 a.m. in New York.
Unless Powell makes clear he'll vacate his board position, Trump has one scheduled opening to fill next year, with Governor Adriana Kugler reaching the end of her term in January.

Odisha: Rahul Gandhi speaks to father of Balasore immolation victim, calls incident a wound to society
NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday spoke with the father of the 20-year-old college student from Balasore, Odisha , who died two days after attempting self-immolation following alleged inaction on her sexual harassment complaint. In a post on X, RAhul Gandhi expressed solidarity with the grieving family. 'Spoke to the father of the brave daughter who lost her life fighting for justice in Balasore, Odisha. In his voice, I could feel her pain, her dreams, and her struggle,' he wrote. 'I assured him that the Congress party and I stand with him at every step. What happened is not just inhuman and shameful, but a wound to the entire society. We will ensure the victim's family gets full justice.' The victim, a second-year student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, had accused her department's head of sexual harassment. She had been protesting since early July but reportedly received no support from the college authorities. On July 12, she set herself on fire outside the college gate. She was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar with 95 percent burns and died on July 14. The incident has triggered widespread outrage across the state and the country, with multiple political parties attacking the BJP-led Odisha government. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 4BHK+Family Lounge+Utility room at 4.49Cr (All Incl)* ATS Triumph, Gurgaon Book Now Undo Gandhi had earlier described the death as an 'organized murder by the system.' He had said, 'That brave student raised her voice against sexual harassment — but instead of delivering justice, she was threatened, tormented, and repeatedly humiliated. Those who were supposed to protect her kept breaking her. This is not suicide; it is an organized murder by the system.' Former Odisha chief minister and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik also criticised the state government. 'It is disturbing to think how a failed system can take someone's life. The most painful part is that this was not an accident, but rather the result of a system that remained silent instead of helping. Struggling for justice, the girl ultimately closed her eyes,' he posted on X. Patnaik also urged the governor to take strict action against both the college authorities and the government. Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan hit back at the Congress, calling Gandhi's remarks an example of 'petty politics.' 'The cheap politics by Rahul Gandhi and Congress on the tragic incident involving Odisha's daughter is extremely unfortunate. Turning a serious and sensitive matter into a political weapon reflects Rahul Gandhi's petty mindset. The Odisha government stands with the victim's family with full sensitivity, and the strictest action will be taken against the culprits; no one will be spared,' he said. According to earlier reports, the student had submitted a written complaint to the college principal against the accused professor. She also uploaded the complaint on social media, tagging student leaders and government officials. Despite repeated efforts, no action was taken until her self-immolation attempt. The head of department and the college principal have since been suspended and arrested. The state government has promised a judicial inquiry and directed all colleges and universities to strengthen safety mechanisms, including CCTV monitoring and internal squads. However, opposition leaders continue to demand accountability from the higher education minister and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Protests across Odisha are ongoing, with students, women's groups, and political activists demanding swift and visible justice for the victim. The incident has reignited debate over women's safety on campuses and the failure of institutions to act in time, despite repeated warnings.

Asian stocks today: Indices trade mixed; tech firms lift HSI over 0.2%, Shanghai slips 0.1%
Asian stock markets were mixed on Wednesday as investors balanced optimism over Indonesia's new trade agreement with the US against concerns about rising US inflation, which has led to reduced expectations of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Japan's Nikei traded at 39,909, up 230 points or 0.58%. Hong Kong's HSI also surged 68 points or 0.28%, reaching 24,658. This rally was led by tech firms, after US chip giant Nvidia announced it would resume exports to China following Washington's decision to lift licensing restrictions. Shanghai traded in red, shredding 4 points or 0.13%, reaching 3500. South Korea's Kospi also slumped 23 points or 0.73%, reaching 3,191 at 10:20 AM IST. The dollar climbed to its strongest level against the yen since early April, supported by a jump in US Treasury yields to their highest in over a month. The move came after Tuesday's data showed US consumer prices rose by 0.3% in June, matching forecasts but marking the biggest monthly gain since January. Economists pointed to rising prices for goods like coffee and home furnishings as evidence of the inflationary effect of the Trump administration's expanding tariffs. The Federal Reserve has held interest rates steady in recent months as it waits to assess the full impact of tariffs on inflation. Chair Jerome Powell had earlier said he expected the effect of the tariffs to become more visible during the summer. Meanwhile, tech stocks continued to show resilience. Shares of AI leader Nvidia surged 4% overnight, helping lift sentiment in the sector. Oil prices remained under pressure, with Brent crude steady at around $69 per barrel.
