Mazda has issued two separate recalls impacting a total of more than 183,000 vehicles due to issues with airbags not deploying and an indicator light that may not flash.
According to notices posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recalls impact a combined 183,656 vehicles, including certain cars in the following models:
Airbag issue: 2024-2025 CX-30 and 2024-2025 Mazda3

: 7525E NHTSA recall number: 25V357000
The majority of the Mazda vehicles being recalled (171,412) were due to an airbag issue. The vehicles were recalled because the airbags may not deploy in a crash, increasing the risk of injuries.
According to Mazda, certain 2024-2025 Mazda3 and CX30 vehicles may have faulty air bag sensors that set an error code, which could deactivate the airbags due to a low battery condition.
The vehicles were built between May 2023 and January 2025 in Mexico and Japan. Mazda began investigating the issue after someone within the U.S. market reported an airbag warning light issue in June 2024.
'At that time, Mazda determined that the issue was non-safety related, as it was attributed to customer usage and/or error of leaving the ignition in the 'ON' position for two or more hours without starting the engine,' the company said. 'This caused the battery to deplete to a level where the engine could no longer be started, resulting in the illumination of the air bag warning light after the battery is recharged then the engine is started.'
To fix the issue, dealers will reprogram the air bag sensor units with new software or replace the unit for free. Mazda said it plans to mail owners notification letters by July 28.

7425E NHTSA recall number: 25V336000
The rest of the Mazda vehicles recalled this week (12,244) could have an indicator light issue, according to the carmaker.
The company said an indicator light on the vehicle fails to light up and warn drivers of a traction control system or dynamic stability control system issue, increasing the likelihood of them crashing.
The indicator light recall includes certain 2024-2025 Mazda MX-5 vehicles.
Mazda said it identified the issue after a supplier found a software error in February. The company added it made mass production changes with improved software in March.
'As of May 19, 2025, Mazda is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this concern,' the company wrote. 'Also, as of this date, no field report has been received by the U.S. and the U.S. Territories.'
Mazda said dealers will replace the dynamic stability control unit for free. The company will mail owner notification letters by July 21.
Owners can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 6.

Kia recall of over 137,000 Soul, Selto vehicles audited by NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that it has opened an audit of the remedy for a recall of certain Kia vehicles. The agency announced Aug. 6 that it would conduct an audit into over 137,000 2021-2023 Seltos and Soul vehicles that were recalled in February for piston oil rings that may have been manufactured incorrectly. Dealers were to replace the engine free of charge if necessary, federal safety regulators said at the time, and also install piston-ring sensing noise software free of charge. The agency said that its Recall Management Division has conducted a review of 47 complaints lodged between April and June that allege that the remedy is ineffective and unavailable. The recall was originally caused by a quality deviation by supplier of the piston oil ring, according to the recall report. The faulty piston rings may damage the surface of the cylinder wall over time and lead to increasedoil consumption. If a recalled vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, the engine damage caused by the increased oil consumption can cause engine failure or, in limited cases, a fire. Drivers of a recalled vehicle affected by the defective piston oil ring may see increased oil consumption, hear abnormal engine noise and see the oil pressure warning light illuminate.

2025 Mazda CX-30 Vs. 2026 Honda HR-V: 5 Major Differences

While small crossovers might not be as popular as their larger siblings, they can bring incredible value to the road for the right driver. The Mazda CX-30 and Honda HR-V are two close competitors, with similar pricing and equipment. Once they're compared head-to-head, however, each crossover has some distinct advantages over the other. Small crossovers are some of the most affordable vehicles in the automotive industry. When it comes down to the 2026 Honda HR-V and 2025 Mazda CX-30, there's a decisive winner. The Mazda CX-30 is priced from $25,195, while the Honda HR-V starts at $26,200. That difference grows larger once you take into account that the CX-30 comes with all-wheel drive, while the HR-V comes with front-wheel drive. At the top of the range, the difference in price shrinks, although the CX-30 still has the advantage of standard AWD. The top-spec Honda HR-V EX-L is available from $30,050 and includes leather-trimmed seats, an eight-speaker audio system, and a nine-inch touchscreen display. The most comparably-equipped Mazda CX-30 model, the 2.5 S Carbon Edition, is available from $30,140. It comes equipped with an eight-speaker audio system, wireless smartphone connectivity, and an 8.8-inch touchscreen display. Compact crossovers, as their segment name implies, aren't the most spacious, but they still offer plenty of room for passengers and cargo. The Mazda CX-30 and Honda HR-V have comparable wheelbases, measuring 104.4 and 104.5 inches, respectively. Despite that similarity, the HR-V has a significant advantage when it comes to both passenger and cargo space. The Honda HR-V boasts up to 98.7 cu ft. of passenger space, with 39.4 inches of front headroom, 55.2 inches of rear shoulder room, and 37.7 inches of rear legroom. The Mazda CX-30 tops out at 94.1 cu ft. of passenger space without a moonroof, and it only tops the HR-V in a handful of measurements. In terms of cargo space, the Honda HR-V offers 24.4 cu ft. with the rear seats in their upright position, topping the Mazda CX-30's 20.2 cu ft. With the rear seats stowed or folded down, the Honda HR-V packs in 55.1 cu ft. of cargo space, while the CX-30 boasts just 45.2 cu ft. Both the 2026 Honda HR-V and 2025 Mazda CX-30 come equipped with a long list of standard safety systems, but convenient infotainment options are a major purchasing factor for many drivers. In that sense, the Honda HR-V has several advantages over its rival. While the CX-30 features an 8.8-inch touchscreen display, the HR-V comes with a slightly larger nine-inch screen. The HR-V also features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility across all trim levels, whereas you'll have to upgrade to the CX-30 2.5 S Carbon Edition to get rid of the wire. The Honda HR-V also comes with a standard wireless smartphone charging pad on all models, a feature that is reserved for higher CX-30 models. When it comes to performance, the Mazda CX-30 is the clear winner. In addition to standard AWD, the CX-30 comes equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 191 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. If you aren't a fan of CVTs, the Mazda CX-30's power is transmitted via a six-speed automatic transmission, making it a great alternative. In terms of efficiency, the 2025 Mazda CX-30 is rated for 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The Honda HR-V comes stocked with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a CVT, producing 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. FWD comes standard, but you can upgrade to AWD for $1,500. 2026 Honda HR-V FWD models are rated for 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Upgrading to AWD reduces fuel economy by one to two miles per gallon, respectively. If you move up the Mazda CX-30 range, there's a more powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine on the docket. With premium fuel, that engine produces up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. Power continues to be delivered through a six-speed automatic transmission. Efficiency takes a slight hit, with turbocharged CX-30 models earning up to 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Outside of a new native navigation system and more controls via voice commands, the Mazda CX-30 doesn't have many notable changes on the docket for the 2025 model year. That's not the case for the 2026 Honda HR-V. In addition to a slightly refreshed styling, the HR-V comes stocked with an updated list of standard equipment. Perhaps most notably, all 2026 Honda HR-V models now include a nine-inch touchscreen display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Rear privacy glass now comes standard on all trims as well, and the base LX model rides on gray 17-inch alloy wheels. The mid-tier Sport model gets a bit more stylish, with black tailgate badging and black 18-inch alloy wheels. The EX-L model gets new 18-inch wheels as well. Inside, the EX-L trim rounds out the major changes with silver steering wheel spokes, dynamic climate control knob lighting, and front footwell lighting. When it comes down to brass tacks, a small crossover can make for a great first car, as well as a viable option for drivers looking to downsize. With affordable pricing, respectable efficiency, and key features that hit all the right notes, it's hard to go wrong with either the Mazda CX-30 or Honda HR-V. If driving dynamics are the name of the game, however, the former's more powerful engine and standard all-wheel drive make it the easy choice. If you're more techy or need more space, then the HR-V's interior is likely the better option. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Japanese car firms at bottom of UK electric sales ranking

Japanese car manufacturers recorded the sharpest declines for electric vehicle (EV) sales in the first half of the year, according to new analysis. The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) think tank, which conducted the research, said the stakes 'could not be higher' for car companies which do not prioritise the transition to electric motoring. Honda had the largest decrease for UK EV sales in the first six months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, at 92%. Mazda recorded the second biggest drop at 76%. Nissan saw a 69% fall, but the ECIU noted the company is retooling its factory in Sunderland to build three new EV models, which will likely drive significant uptake. At the other end of the scale, Ford saw the biggest year-on-year increase, with UK EV sales more than four times higher, partly because of the launch of the Ford Puma Gen-E. The top five also included Renault and Volkswagen, which both saw UK sales of their EVs more than treble. Colin Walker, head of transport at the ECIU, told the PA news agency: 'Traditional brands are fighting back, dramatically increasing the number of EVs they sell in what is now the world's fourth largest EV market. 'Legacy manufacturers are proving more than capable of making the transition to building the electric cars of the future with European manufacturers dominating.' A report by consultancy CBI Economics found a failure by the automotive sector to make the transition to manufacturing EVs could see its contribution to the UK economy fall by as much as £34.1 billion, with the loss of more than 400,000 jobs. Mr Walker said: 'The stakes for car companies the world over, and the car industry here in the UK, could not be higher.' Ben Nelmes, chief executive of green consultancy New Automotive, which provided the statistics for the ECIU's analysis, said: 'The race to go electric is on and our new data separates the sprinters from the stragglers. 'It is fantastic to see legacy brands like Ford, Renault and the UK's own Mini delivering for drivers with a colossal surge in EV sales. 'The message to the laggards is simple: get on and build the brilliant EVs of the future, or prepare to be left behind.' The Government has pledged to ban the sale of new fully petrol or diesel cars and vans from 2030. Sales of hybrid cars will still be permitted until 2035. Under the Government's zero emission vehicle (Zev) mandate, at least 28% of new cars sold by each manufacturer in the UK this year must be zero emission, which generally means pure electric. Across all manufacturers, the figure during the first half of the year was 21.6%. Recent changes to the mandate mean it will be easier for manufacturers who do not meet the targets to avoid fines. A spokesperson for Mazda said the brand's drop in EV sales was caused by the discontinuation of the Mazda MX-30 BEV (battery electric vehicle), but the fully electric Mazda6e will be introduced in 2026. He added: 'We will continue to meet the needs of our customers while developing a robust plan for the introduction of multiple EV models beyond 2026 that will give our customers an easy transition into electrified driving.' Honda and Nissan were approached for a comment. – Here are the top five car brands based on their increase in UK EV sales in the first half of the year:1. Ford: 324%2. BYD: 261%3. Renault: 251%4. Porsche: 203%5. Volkswagen: 201% – Here are the bottom five:1. Honda: -92%2. Mazda: -76%3. Nissan: -69%4. Toyota: -41%5. MG: -35%
