Mazda has issued two separate recalls impacting a total of more than 183,000 vehicles due to issues with airbags not deploying and an indicator light that may not flash.
According to notices posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recalls impact a combined 183,656 vehicles, including certain cars in the following models:
Airbag issue: 2024-2025 CX-30 and 2024-2025 Mazda3
2024-2025 CX-30 and 2024-2025 Mazda3 Indicator light issue: 2024-2025 Mazda MX-5
Here's what we know about each recall so far.

: 2024-2025 Mazda3 and 2024-2025 CX-30 Number of vehicles impacted: 171,412
171,412 Mazda recall number : 7525E
: 7525E NHTSA recall number: 25V357000
The majority of the Mazda vehicles being recalled (171,412) were due to an airbag issue. The vehicles were recalled because the airbags may not deploy in a crash, increasing the risk of injuries.
According to Mazda, certain 2024-2025 Mazda3 and CX30 vehicles may have faulty air bag sensors that set an error code, which could deactivate the airbags due to a low battery condition.
The vehicles were built between May 2023 and January 2025 in Mexico and Japan. Mazda began investigating the issue after someone within the U.S. market reported an airbag warning light issue in June 2024.
'At that time, Mazda determined that the issue was non-safety related, as it was attributed to customer usage and/or error of leaving the ignition in the 'ON' position for two or more hours without starting the engine,' the company said. 'This caused the battery to deplete to a level where the engine could no longer be started, resulting in the illumination of the air bag warning light after the battery is recharged then the engine is started.'
To fix the issue, dealers will reprogram the air bag sensor units with new software or replace the unit for free. Mazda said it plans to mail owners notification letters by July 28.

7425E NHTSA recall number: 25V336000
The rest of the Mazda vehicles recalled this week (12,244) could have an indicator light issue, according to the carmaker.
The company said an indicator light on the vehicle fails to light up and warn drivers of a traction control system or dynamic stability control system issue, increasing the likelihood of them crashing.
The indicator light recall includes certain 2024-2025 Mazda MX-5 vehicles.
Mazda said it identified the issue after a supplier found a software error in February. The company added it made mass production changes with improved software in March.
'As of May 19, 2025, Mazda is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this concern,' the company wrote. 'Also, as of this date, no field report has been received by the U.S. and the U.S. Territories.'
Mazda said dealers will replace the dynamic stability control unit for free. The company will mail owner notification letters by July 21.
Owners can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 6.

Tesla robotaxi service reportedly launching next week in Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — In less than a week, people might see Tesla robotaxis riding around Austin. The company reportedly planned to launch its autonomous vehicle ride hailing service Thursday, June 12. Still, a federal agency has several questions about the safety of the vehicles. Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk discussed plans with CNBC to launch the service in Austin. How is Austin working with Tesla on its robotaxi rollout? 'We want to deliberately take it slow,' Musk said. 'I mean, we could start with 1,000 [robotaxis] 10,000 on day one, but I don't think that would be prudent. So we will start with probably 10 for a week, then increase it to 20, 30, 40.' Musk himself mentioned testing already started. Just last week, he posted on X that, 'for the past several days, Tesla has been testing self-driving Model Y cars (no one in driver's seat) on Austin public streets with no incidents.' The service is reportedly already available for some employees. In April, Tesla's AI account posted a video on X claiming that 'supervised ride hailing service is live for an early set of employees in Austin and [the] San Francisco Bay Area.' Still, some questions remain unanswered. In a letter sent to Tesla in May, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked the company to explain how it plans to operate safely. Questions focused on things like: Crash reporting Complying with traffic safey laws Automated responses to emergencies NHTSA asked how the robotaxis will safely operate in low-visibility, like sun glare, fog, rain or snow. Those conditions are tied to previous accidents involving the company's driver-assistance software. KXAN reached out to see if NHTSA heard back. The agency told us its investigation remains open and that Tesla's response must be submitted by June 19. NHTSA said any updates will be posted in the investigation file online. The letter said Tesla may be fined up to $27,874 per day if the agency does not receive a prompt response, with a maximum fine of $139,356,994. Back in December 2024, KXAN confirmed Tesla was in talks with the city of Austin over its autonomous vehicle technology. A spokesperson for the Transportation and Public Works Department said Tesla reached out to the city's autonomous vehicle task force. 'The City treats each AV company that expresses interest in Austin the same, offering training opportunities and providing uniform information,' the transportation spokesperson said in an email to KXAN. KXAN received an updated statement from the department regarding those discussions. We are working with Tesla, as we work with all AV companies looking to deploy in Austin. The city treats each AV company that expresses interest in Austin the same, offering training opportunities and providing information about City right-of-way and procedures. Additionally, Austin Police recently participated in a training with Tesla vehicles that was hosted by the Texas Department of Public Safety.' City of Austin Transportation and Public Works Department KXAN reached out to Tesla directly for comment. We'll update this story if we get a response. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Kia recalls over 80K vehicles over increased crash risk

(NewsNation) — Kia announced recalls on over 80,000 of its vehicles due to an increased crash risk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) posted the recall, which was issued on May 28, stating that 'parking lights that fail to illuminate properly can reduce visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.' The agency also said, 'Due to incorrect software in the Power-net Domain Controller (PDC), when the turn signal is activated while headlamps are activated in a steady burning state or while parking lamps are activated, the corresponding parking lamp does not illuminate in a steady burning manner.' In easier terms, the parking lights flicker. The issue can be fixed either by a Kia dealership or a software update that is downloaded to the vehicle, according to the notice. The recall affects 82,281 of the Kia K5 2025 models. The Kia K5 used to be called the Optima, and it was launched in South Korea in 2010. The 2025 model was revealed in the first half of 2024. Kia says it features 'refreshed exterior styling, updated lights, grills and fascia and a distinctive star map lighting design.' The NHTSA recall database is regularly updated with the status of recalls on car parts, car accessories, and vehicles. To check and see if your vehicle is involved in a recall, you can search the NHTSA's website. 1.7 million air conditioners recalled over mold growth When searching, you can put your vehicle's license plate number or vehicle identification number (VIN) into the search bar. This will give you a more accurate idea of whether your vehicle is involved in a recall. One option you might have is downloading the 'over-the-air' software update offered by Kia. This software update can be downloaded directly to your vehicle. You can also visit a local Kia dealership to have the issue resolved. Jerky and snack sticks recalled nationwide If your vehicle is affected, you should receive a letter sometime after June 24. You can also contact Kia's customer service line at 1-800-333-4542 and use the recall number (SC341) for more information. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Transportation chief seeks to weaken fuel economy standards, calls Biden-era rule 'illegal'

DETROIT -- Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a rule Friday that Biden-era fuel economy standards for gas-powered cars and trucks were illegal and moved to reverse them, paving the way for a likely reset of rules. Combined with Senate language in the pending budget bill to eliminate penalties for exceeding standards regulating how far vehicles must travel on a gallon of fuel, automakers moving forward could come under less pressure from regulators to reduce their pollution. Ultimately, the nation's use of electric vehicles could be slowed. The moves align with the Trump administration's ongoing efforts to slash federal support for EVs. President Donald Trump has pledged to end what he has called an EV 'mandate,' referring incorrectly to former President Joe Biden's target for half of all new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030. EVs do not use gasoline or emit planet-warming greenhouse gases. No federal policy has required auto companies to sell — or car buyers to purchase — EVs, although California and other states have imposed rules requiring that all new passenger vehicles sold in the state to be zero-emission by 2035. When he was in office, Biden imposed increasingly stringent emissions standards for cars and trucks. He included use of EVs in calculating the rules — an inclusion the Trump administration and the auto industry have argued was illegal and raised the bar too high for automakers to meet. The Transportation Department's memorandum Friday said the previous administration 'ignored statutory requirements' that barred consideration of EVs when setting standards. 'We are making vehicles more affordable and easier to manufacture in the United States," Duffy said. The revised rule does not itself change existing standards, but it empowers the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to make adjustments in coming months. Duffy put pressure on the federal agency earlier this year to reverse the fuel economy rules as soon as possible. Under the Biden administration, automakers were required to average about 50 miles (81 kilometers) per gallon of gas by 2031 — up from about 39 miles (63 kilometers) per gallon for light-duty vehicles today — in an effort to save almost 70 billion gallons (265 billion liters) of gasoline through 2050. The rules, finalized in 2024, increased fuel economy 2% per year for passenger cars in every model year from 2027 to 2031, and 2% each year for SUVs and other light trucks from 2029 to 2031. Mileage rules — in place since the 1970s energy crisis — work alongside the EPA limits on vehicle greenhouse gas emissions. Transportation accounts for the largest source of the nation's planet-warming emissions, and cars and trucks make up more than half of those. In recent years, automakers have been manufacturing gasoline-fueled cars that are more efficient and get higher mileage. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents automakers, called Duffy's announcement 'a positive development" that adds 'important clarity' to federal mileage rules. The Biden-era standards 'were 'improperly predicated' on alternative fuel vehicles,' said John Bozzella, the group's president and CEO. But Katherine Garcia, director of the Sierra Club's Clean Transportation for All program, said the Transportation Department's action will increase costs for Americans and increase pollution. 'Making our vehicles less fuel-efficient hurts families by forcing them to pay more at the pump,' she said. 'It will lead to fewer clean-vehicle options for consumers, squeeze our wallets, endanger our health and increase climate pollution.' Meanwhile, Republicans on the Senate Commerce Committee added proposed language to the pending budget bill Thursday that would remove fines penalizing automakers that don't meet fuel economy standards with their gas-powered vehicles. Automakers can buy credits under a trading program if they don't meet the standards. Manufacturers whose vehicles exceed the standards earn credits that they can sell to other carmakers. The memo and bill text landed this week as Tesla owner Elon Musk and Trump engage in a public spat online, with Trump suggesting that Musk 'only developed a problem' with his budget bill because it rolls back tax credits for EVs. Musk disputes that. ___ Daly reported from Washington. ___ ___
