Texans vs Panthers live updates, score: Highlights, predictions for preseason Week 2

USA Today2 days ago
The Houston Texans, headlined by a slew of new rookies, including Tay Ersery at offensive tackle and Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel at wide receiver, will debut in front of the hometown fans at NRG Stadium in a preseason showdown on Saturday afternoon against the Carolina Panthers.
Starters for the Panthers are projected to play for at least one drive in Saturday's contest. Headlined by former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young, Carolina's offense looks to be the backbone of the franchise in Year 3. They made immense strides during Houston's joint practice on Thursday, with Young making several highlight throws.
As for who's starting on Houston's side, coach DeMeco Ryans mentioned that the younger starters would see action. That means that rookie Earsery, the projected starting right tackle, Noel, who's fighting for first-team reps in the slot, and Higgins, the newest name on the outside, are expected to see action.
As for everyone else?
"Everybody's kind of on their own plan," Ryans said last week. "We'll have a handful of guys who won't see time at all. Then we'll have a certain group of guys who are limited. So, it's just a lot of different guys in different categories there."
There is still plenty to watch for with Stroud, Will Anderson Jr. and a swarm of other top names on offense.
Texans Wire will have you up to date on everything that happens this afternoon at NRG Stadium.

The Texans and Panthers will air live on NFL Network, but it will also air locally on ABC 13 in Houston. It's been announced that Bryce Young, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick, will start for Carolina and will likely play the entire first half of the game. For the Texans, only partial starters will see action, so fans should expect to see C.J. Stroud, Nick Chubb, Danielle Hunter, Nico Collins or others on the field in Houston at NRG Stadium.
In addition to airing live on NFL Network and the aforementioned channels, the Texans-Panthers game will also re-air on NFL Network on Sunday at 10 p.m. CT. The NFL Network will re-air the game one final time on Friday, August 23, at 11 a.m. CT.
Additionally, out-of-market fans can stream the game live on NFL+.
Texans vs. Panthers start time
Kickoff for the Texans' preseason opener against the Vikings is scheduled for Noon CT, as the two sides gather at NRG Stadium for the showdown between former Kyle Shanahan assistants. Do not expect many of the Texans' starters to get reps in this one since DeMeco Ryans usually prefers to have his starters see reps in the joint practices that begin on Thursday against the Detroit Lions out in Allen Park.
Streaming options for the game include the NFL Network and Fubo, which offers a free trial.

Surprise: It's a player-for-player swap in Saints-Jaguars Khalen Saunders trade

Now this is a surprise. Khalen Saunders was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday night, but not in exchange for a draft pick. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that the New Orleans Saints got a player in return: Luke Fortner. The 27-year old is a former third-round pick and two-year starter for Jacksonville, having played college football at Kentucky. Fortner tallied more than 2,400 snaps in the Jaguars offense during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, but he saw a reduced role last year, and is probably at his best coming in off the bench rather than manning a starting position. But that's an improvement in depth for a Saints offensive line which sorely needed it. They already lost Will Clapp to a season-ending injury, and he had been signed as a preferred backup behind Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy. New Orleans hosted a group of free agent centers for a tryout last week and settled on All-UFL lineman Mike Panasiuk, who got some snaps in during Sunday's preseason game behind rookie backup Torriceli Simpkins III. But Panasiuk drew a penalty and the Saints could look into playing Simpkins at guard with Trevor Penning and Cesar Ruiz both managing injuries. Stay tuned.

Panthers signing QB Bryce Perkins after Andy Dalton injury

In need of depth at quarterback, the Carolina Panthers intend to sign Bryce Perkins, according to reports. The 2025 United Football League MVP will join the Panthers after backup QB Andy Dalton exited Saturday's preseason game with a right elbow sprain. That left Jack Plummer as the only quarterback option behind starter Bryce Young. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Perkins was named the UFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year this past season, passing for 1,342 yards and nine touchdowns (two interceptions) while leading the Michigan Panthers to the league championship. In the title game, he threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns. Undrafted out of Virginia in 2020, Perkins spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. His only game time came in 2022, when he appeared in five games and went 19-for-34 for 161 yards and a touchdown against two interceptions. He also rushed for 90 yards. Carolina (0-2) wraps up its preseason schedule on Thursday when the Panthers host the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dalton, who enters his third year with Carolina and 15th year in the league, was expected to undergo further testing on Sunday to determine the severity of the injury. In his first two seasons with the Panthers, Dalton appeared in nine games, passing for 1,350 yards and nine touchdowns as the backup QB. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Reports: Eagles obtain WR John Metchie III from Texans

The Philadelphia Eagles acquired receiver John Metchie III from the Houston Texans on Sunday, according to multiple reports. The Texans received tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round pick in the deal. Houston also sent a sixth-round pick next season to the Eagles. Metchie, 25, had 40 receptions for 412 yards and one touchdown in 29 games with Houston over the past two seasons. He was a second-round pick in the 2022 draft but missed that season due to a battle with leukemia. Metchie played college football at Alabama and was a teammate with Philadelphia wideout DeVonta Smith with the Crimson Tide. Smith won the Heisman Trophy in 2020 when he and Metchie were the top two target on the school's national championship team. Bryant, 27, has caught 98 passes for 877 yards and 10 touchdowns in 78 games (33 starts) over five seasons for the Cleveland Browns (2020-23) and Las Vegas Raiders. His career high for catches was 31 in 2022. The Browns selected Bryant in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved
