C.J. Stroud Shoulder Issue Downplayed by Texans' New OC

C.J. Stroud Shoulder Issue Downplayed by Texans' New OC originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud has been sidelined during OTAs due to a minor shoulder issue, but coach DeMeco Ryans and the Houston staff believe it is nothing to be worried about. Advertisement Ryans, when asked about Stroud's lack of involvement Wednesday, downplayed the activity level and emphasized players' routines will vary widely day to day. Despite the precautionary rest, Stroud is preparing for an expanded role in year three, gaining more responsibility to adjust plays and protections under new offensive coordinator Nick Caley. Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud (7) rolls out to pass during the second half against the Kansas City Chiefs© Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images Caley, a first-time play-caller with roots in the Rams and Patriots systems, is installing a new offensive philosophy built on collaboration with Stroud. The quarterback is embracing this evolution, aiming to bounce back from a statistically down year after his standout rookie season. Advertisement 'Yeah, he's locked in every step of the way,' Caley said after OTAs on Friday. 'No concerns whatsoever. I know DeMeco has already hit on this. Everybody has a specific routine relative to their own routine, specific to whatever. Whether it's football, whether it's athletic training, etc., he's doing a great job and he's out here and he's working.' Stroud has been a fan of the addition of Nick Caley. 'He comes from L.A. and New England and he is going to bring some of that swag over here, so that kind of is what I'm used to,' Stroud said of Caley. 'Taking control and being a little more pre=snap, having tools to put my guys in the best position. That is something that we really didn't work on these last two years. Though not participating in drills, Caley noted that Stroud is absorbing the offense mentally, describing OTAs as a 'discovery process' for players adjusting to the new system. Advertisement 'It's really an evolving process,' Caley said. 'This is the time to put the rubber on the road, see what we can do, and evolve from there.' For a franchise eyeing a deep postseason push after back-to-back exits in the AFC Divisional Round, C.J. Stroud remains central to the Texans' long-term vision. Now just a year away from becoming eligible for what could be a massive contract extension, Stroud is viewed as the cornerstone of the team's future. As long as the team captain continues to develop, the Texans are prepared to invest heavily in him. Confidence in Stroud runs deep — from the locker room to the coaching staff, and all the way up to ownership. Texans set up for joint practice with Lions in upcoming preseason

Add another joint practice to the list for the Houston Texans entering training camp. According to the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan M. Alexander, the Texans will meet up for a joint battle with the Detroit Lions ahead of their preseason matchup in August at Ford Field. Houston will now have two joint practices this preseason, including one against the Carolina Panthers at NRG Stadium ahead of the August 16 showdown. Advertisement Texans coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed the report following the first day of voluntary OTA workouts. "We get to do it in a competitive environment where you're not getting down on the quarterbacks," Ryans said Wednesday. "It's the safest way. I feel like we can get really good work for our starters. I'm excited to go up against the Lions." Houston and Detroit met on primetime last November for a Week 10 showdown at NRG Stadium. Jared Goff tossed five interceptions, but C.J. Stroud's two costly turnovers in the second elevated the Lions to a 26-23 victory on Sunday Night Football. Advertisement The Texans last year hosted a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams ahead of their final preseason showdown. The year before, Houston hosted a pair of joint practices against the Miami Dolphins ahead of the matchup at NRG Stadium. The Texans also have preseason matchups against the Minnesota Vikings on the road, though nothing is scheduled for a one-day practice between the two sides. Houston begins the regular season on the road against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Sept. 7. Texans' DeMeco Ryans not among top 10 favorite for Coach of the Year

Texans' DeMeco Ryans not among top 10 favorite for Coach of the Year The Houston Texans head into Year 3 under DeMeco Ryans with a pair of 10-win seasons and playoff victories. A former Pro Bowl linebacker turned coach, Ryans was the most sought-after candidate in the 2023 cycle, and remained a competitive standout during his tenure back in NRG Stadium. The Texans have mostly met expectations under Ryans. When hired, Houston won 11 combined games under three coaches in three years. Including the playoff victory of the Cleveland Browns, the Texans surpassed that mark in Ryans' first year. The third-year coach is also the fastest coach in franchise history to 20 wins. He's one of three coaches to collect multiple double-digit win campaigns during their tenure as the leader of the clubhouse. But is Ryans the front-runner to win the NFL's highest individual honor entering 2025? Nope. In fact, he's not even top 10 despite being top 10 in victories since taking over for Lovie Smith. Chicago's Ben Johnson is currently the favorite (+700) to win Coach of the Year entering his first season as a head coach, according to Draft Kings. New England's Mike Vrabel (+850) is behind him following his one-year haitus from coaching. Several other prominent names, including Jacksonville's Liam Coen (+1200), Las Vegas' Pete Carroll (+1200), New Orleans' Kellen Moore (+1200) and Denver's Sean Payton (+1200) were all in consideration, yet only two have previously been head coaches before. Given that most of the names are coaches with teams amid a rebuild, it makes sense on paper. The Texans have the potential to be one of the biggest standouts in the AFC this season and it might come easier than most expect. Houston has the 25th-ranked schedule in the league, which includes stints against the NFC West and AFC West, as well as facing their AFC South rivals twice. But the talent is also there. If Ryans and his coaching staff can maximize this roster -- and be competitive within the division -- there's a belief the Texans could contend for the No. 1 seed in the conference this fall.

Who do Texans play in 2025? Houston's opponents ahead of NFL schedule release

Who do Texans play in 2025? Houston's opponents ahead of NFL schedule release The 2025 NFL schedule release is just days away, and Houston Texans fans are about to find out what awaits the back-to-back AFC South champions this season. The Texans are coming off another 10-7 finish behind the duo of DeMeco Ryans and C.J. Stroud. While Houston might have won another AFC South crown, it was expected to make a jump into a contention threat for 2025, but finished with the same record despite spending over $70 million in free agency. There's hope on the horizon with the hiring of new offensive coordinator Nick Caley, but everything falls in line based on the offensive line. Houston's roster boasts ample talent, including a former Offensive Rookie of the Year in Stroud, receivers Nico Collins, Christian Kirk and Jayden Higgins, tight end Dalton Schultz, as well as All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., defensive backs Calen Bullock, C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Kamari Lassiter, defensive tackles Danielle Hunter, Will Anderson Jr. and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair. The schedule will also feature the usual six games against the AFC South, which is again shaping up to be one of the easier divisions in the NFL. Houston will face the AFC West -- a division that featured three playoff teams -- but perhaps regression set in between Denver, Los Angeles and Kansas City this offseason.
