WATCH: Texans celebrate DeMeco Ryans' birthday after trainin camp practice
DeMeco Ryans never makes plans for his birthday, even if his family wants to do something fun.
Why? Well, the third-year coach for the Houston Texans is usually preoccupied with training camp practices and film study to take a few days off to celebrate another year around the sun. At the least Texans know how to celebrate "Cap" on his special day at practice.
Before the Texans took the field in front of fans for the second straight practice, fans greeted Ryans with a personalized sign, wishing him a Happy Birthday. The former Pro Bowl linebacker recently turned 41, though he told the media after practice he was only hitting the 2-1 to celebrate.
As Ryans left to sign autographs, he was approached by TORO, the Texans' mascot, with a cake and candle ready for the birthday boy to make a wish. Of course, Ryans played into the fun, blowing out the candles and fans sang the birthday song.

Hopefully coach wished for a Lombardi Trophy and parade in Houston come February, but we'll never know since it's bad luck.

How 'King of the Hill' rediscovered its voice with new Hulu revival
SAN DIEGO – Most of us have changed and seen our world evolve over the past 15-plus years. Even the animated Texans of 'King of the Hill.' Most of them at least. Chain-smoking conspiracy theorist Dale Gribble used to seem like an outlier, but over the years, Dale has ended up more 'mainstream,' Toby Huss, who voices the character on Hulu's Season 14 revival (streaming now) of the popular sitcom, says with a laugh. 'He got out-righted on the right.' Created by Mike Judge ('Beavis and Butthead') and Greg Daniels ('The Office'), 'King of the Hill' ran for 13 seasons, fostering a loyal fan following until it exited the Fox lineup in 2009. The new season again centers on Hank (voiced by Judge) and Peggy Hill (Kathy Najimy), their son Bobby (Pamela Adlon), and their friends and family around small-town Arlen, Texas. 'When we were first doing the show, at the very beginning, we used to say it's like Andy Griffith is back and he's pissed off. Now it's kind of like Hank is back and he's pissed off,' Judge says. The revival is full of 'a whole new world of things to be annoying to someone like Hank.' And Bobby is now in his early 20s, living his dream as a chef at a Japanese BBQ-German fusion restaurant in Dallas and inheriting his dad's work ethic. Executive producer Saladin K. Patterson, who headed ABC's 2021 'The Wonder Years' revamp, was 'a big fan of the original' show. When Judge and Daniels approached him to head up the new 'King of the Hill," Patterson saw a way to again tackle social and cultural commentary through family and relationships, but in a more modern fashion. 'Hank always represented a common-sense middle, and the show tried to pull people toward that middle,' Patterson says. "People love the show because they relate to Hank. So if those same people can relate to Hank now, maybe we can then have some fun with the commentary. ... Things have changed around him, and where does he fit in? Maybe that helps us also deal with the way things have changed in 2025.' Adlon recalls fondly the early days when everyone recorded in the same space. 'The show started to change toward the later years" as the cast members got other Hollywood gigs, Adlon says. "Brittany (Murphy), God bless her, she was never there because she was becoming a movie star. But we used to sit in the green room all day with like No Doubt and Green Day. We'd be like, 'Are you kidding me?' ' Returning to their old characters has been a treat for the cast. Bobby's 'just been inside me, dormant, this whole time,' says Adlon, adding that she has woven in 'a little nuance and a little subtlety' now that he's in his 20s. Lauren Tom is happy to see one of her characters, Bobby's old friend Connie Souphanousinphone, break from "trying to be the good girl that her stereotypical tiger parents wanted,' she says, and grow into "someone who's finding her own voice more.' Connie even taps into the world of ethical non-monogamy as an 'open-minded' young adult. 'I was like, 'You go, girl,' " Tom says. "I'm proud of her.' Peggy Hill, though? 'Peggy is freaking Peggy no matter where she is,' Najimy says. 'It made sense to me that she didn't come back a philosopher or a stripper. She was out of place (in Saudi Arabia) and now she's home.' Huss, though, returns to play a character he never has before. In the earlier seasons, he voiced Connie's dad, Kahn (now played by Ronny Chieng), and now Huss inherits Dale from Johnny Hardwick, who died in 2023. 'I think we smoked the same number of cigarettes,' Huss quips. 'It was a little intimidating because I didn't want to mess it up because of the memory of our friend. He was a really unique, gifted, funny, weird, touching guy. You don't want to step too heavy into his shadow. You want to just slip into it and then just try to do what he did.' Over the years, the 'King of the Hill' cast often would imitate one another's characters, Judge says, 'so it seemed like maybe this was the right way. Keep it in the family.' Huss reveals that the hardest role to do is Hank. He and Stephen Root (who returns as Hank's friend Bill) would often try it back in the day when Judge wasn't around, 'and we'd both just be able to go as far as, 'Well, Bobby …' and after that it would fall apart.'

Second round selection Tre Harris has instant impact potential with L.A. Chargers
L.A. needed to amplify the quality of their receiving corps, and they found a potential answer in the second round, at the 55th overall section, with the Ole Miss product. This NFL preseason provides a great opportunity to assess which individual members of the next rookie class have the best opportunities for immediate playing time. Look no further than the previous spring's draft, and focus on the guys who were "needs-based" picks. Tre Harris, of the Los Angeles Chargers, fits this designation fully. L.A. needed to amplify the quality of their receiving corps, and they found a potential answer in the second round, at the 55th overall section, with the Ole Miss product. And while Harris will help shore up quality at the position group, the Chargers' depth took another hit, with the retirement of Mike Williams in mid-July. Williams, who was placed on the PUP list in training camp, was on a one-year deal, but he obviously felt that his eight previous years in the league was enough. So who will the Bolts get to replace him? Well, listed out some potential names, writing: "Although there are other options available in free agency, like Gabe Davis and Amari Cooper, the Chargers should have their sights focused on Allen." And the Allen referred to there is obviously Keenan Allen, who spent 10 seasons with the club, going to the Pro Bowl six times. It's looking like a reunion may potentially happen, as Allen reportedly met with the Chargers on Friday. At this stage in his career, Allen could slot in as the WR4. That would make him the first guy stepping up to fill in, should one of the starting trio go down with an injury. You can count Harris in that group, as ESPN's current depth chart projects him the WR3. Ladd McConkey is the hands-down number one. Given that he finished in the top ten in receiving yards last season, his status is legit. Quentin Johnson, who has shown some flashes, but hasn't truly lived up to the hype yet, is the #2. Harris, if he realizes his full potential this season, could replace him in that role. We'll see if the "late start" of sorts, hinders him. One of the main NFL storylines this summer was the high number second-round draft picks who were delayed in signing their deals and reporting to camp. Maybe it won't matter, as Harris comes to the NFL having just played in a very pass happy system, under some fine offensive minds. Mississippi Head Coach Lane Kiffin is known for being elite when it comes to offensive schemes, and he has NFL experience on his CV. Ole Miss Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Charlie Weis Jr. is one of their fastest rising prospects in the coaching world. His penchant for scheme will have no doubt helped make Harris more pro ready. The Chargers truly have a second round pick who is ready to provide instant impact.

6.9 million watched Chargers-Lions Hall of Fame game
Football is back. And while the numbers are yet to hit regular-season form, a large throng tuned in for a glorified scrimmage involving second- and third-stringers. Via Austin Karp of Sports Business Daily, the Chargers-Lions Hall of Fame game on NBC generated 6.9 million viewers on average for the broadcast. It's the biggest audience for the Hall of Fame game since the 2021 matchup between the Steelers and Cowboys, which averaged 7.31 million. Last year, Bears-Texans on ABC averaged 4.93 million. Of the total number, 691,000 watched on Peacock and NBC Digital. It's the biggest NBC preseason streaming audience ever. Several more preseason games will be nationally televised over the next three weeks. In four weeks and three days, the season gets started with Cowboys-Eagles in Philadelphia. On NBC and Peacock. The number will be much higher than 6.9 million for that one.
