Rufai played at the World Cup finals in 1994 and 1998 - and captained Nigeria in their 1-0 loss to England at Wembley in 1994.
But he passed away at a Lagos hospital on Thursday, aged 61, following a long illness.
Nicknamed Dodo Mayana, he played for top-flight clubs across Europe.
Spaniards Deportivo La Coruna and Hercules, Portuguese sides Farense and Gil Vicente, Dutch outfit GA Eagles, as well as Belgians Lokeren and Beveren, all signed the Lagos-born ace.
Rufai joined the select club of goalkeepers to have scored an international goal when converting a penalty in normal time against Ethiopia in 1993.
The son of a tribal king, he passed up the chance to succeed to the throne when his father died in 1999.
Rufai had run a goalkeeping academy in Spain after hanging up his boots.
The Nigerian FA announced: "Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana.

"We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion.
"Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai."
Rufai died on the same day the world of football was mourning Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in Spain.
Jota was on his way to catch a ferry back to the UK when the tyre on his Lamborghini blew out and the car hurtled off the road, catching fire.

Liverpool closing in on £26m deal to sign 18-year-old Parma defender Giovanni Leoni as Arne Slot seeks defensive reinforcements
Liverpool are finalising agreement on a £26million deal for Parma defender Giovanni Leoni. The Reds will pay further add-ons for the 18-year old on performances plus a sell-on percentage. Daily Mail Sport reported on Tuesday that the Premier League champions had stepped up their interest in the defender. The deal unconnected to Liverpool's pursuit of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi for a similar fee. The Italy U19 has only played 17 times in Serie A but the Reds transfer department are understood to like Leoni a lot and are ready to pursue a move to sign him. Liverpool's interest in Leoni, a 6ft 5in central defender, comes after the Reds previously pursued Lenny Yoro, Jorrel Hato and Dean Huijsen as they seek a long-term successor to captain Virgil van Dijk.

Giovanni Leoni: Liverpool closing in on £26m deal for defender
Liverpool are closing in on a £26million deal for Parma's teenage centre back Giovanni Leoni, who will go straight into the first team set-up. Leoni, 18, has emerged as one of the most promising young defenders in Europe and Liverpool are poised to beat Italian clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan in the race to secure his signing. It is understood that Premier League sides, including Manchester United and Newcastle United, also showed late interest in the player, who has previously said Virgil van Dijk is his inspiration. Provided that there are no late hitches, he will now have the opportunity to learn alongside the Liverpool captain, with Leoni effectively replacing Jarell Quansah, who was sold to Bayer Leverkusen for £35million, in head coach Arne Slot's squad.

Premier League to launch ‘RefCams' in TV matches this weekend
Broadcasters will be able to show replays of goals and key incidents in the Premier League from a camera worn by the referee from this weekend. The 'RefCams' will be used from Friday, when Liverpool take on Bournemouth at Anfield, after their successful launch at the Club World Cup and the Premier League's Summer Series in the United States. The Premier League has yet to confirm details but it is expected that matches being screened live by Sky Sports and TNT Sport will have access to RefCam footage. It will also be available to VARs, if required, after a decision by the International FA Board (Ifab) in March. Pierluigi Collina, the chairman of Fifa's refereeing committee, said the use of RefCam at the Club World Cup 'went beyond our expectations', adding: 'We thought it would have been an interesting experience for TV viewers and we received great comments. 'We were asked, 'Why not in all the matches?' and even more, 'Why not in all sports?' 'We had the possibility to see what the referee sees on the field of play. And this was not only for entertainment purposes, but also for coaching the referees and to explain why something was not seen on the field of play.' The first use of a RefCam took place in the Premier League at the end of the 2023-24 season when the Australian referee Jarred Gillett wore a head-mounted camera in the match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United. The video from that was not released until some weeks later, because the use of the camera was part of a programme to promote match officials, but it did capture a stunning angle of Michael Olise's goal. Players will be told about the camera before the match — unlike in 1989 when the referee David Elleray secretly wore a microphone for an Arsenal v Millwall match for an ITV programme, which showed the Arsenal captain Tony Adams calling the match official 'a f***ing cheat'.
