Arbeloa named manager of Real Madrid reserves
May 28 (Reuters) - Former Spain international Alvaro Arbeloa has replaced Raul Gonzalez as manager of Real Madrid's reserve team Castilla, the LaLiga club said on Wednesday.
Arbeloa won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championship titles in 56 appearances for his country and multiple trophies at Real, including one LaLiga and two Champions League titles.
The 42-year-old retired from football in 2017, returning to Real in September 2020 to coach the under-14 side before going on to take charge of the under-19 team in 2022.
Castilla play in the Primera Federacion, the third tier of Spanish football. They finished in sixth place in the 2024-25 season and missed out on a spot in the promotion playoffs.

Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes receives transfer message from Portugal team-mate
Ruben Neves says he would welcome Portugal team-mate Bruno Fernandes at Al-Hilal with open arms this summer. Fernandes was once again United's shining light across an otherwise wretched season, with the 30-year-old notching 19 goals and 20 assists in his 57 appearances for the club. Though it is unlikely to provide much consolation, Fernandes went on to win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award by a landslide, despite captaining the club to their lowest-ever points total in the Premier League. Speculation has been mounting that Fernandes could be set for a change of scenery after five-and-a-half years at Old Trafford, despite Ruben Amorim repeatedly underlining his fellow countryman's importance to his project. Widespread reports claim Al-Hilal are looking to wrap up a stunning deal for Fernandes before their Club World Cup campaign gets underway in a fortnight's time. The Saudi Pro League outfit are believed to be readying a £100million bid for Fernandes and have intimated they would be prepared to triple the Portuguese's current salary at the Theatre of Dreams. 'I recommend all the players in the national team, of course,' Neves, formerly of Wolves, said when asked about the prospect of Fernandes joining him at Al-Hilal. 'Fortunately, Portugal have produced a lot of talent and continues to do so. We are a lucky country in that respect. We are also very hard-working. A very small country, but one that has produced excellent players. 'Just yesterday we saw four of our players – Goncalo Ramos, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes and Vitinha – lift the Champions League. It is an excellent sign for Portugal. 'I would like to have any player from the national team in my side.' And while Fernandes is yet to provide any assurances over his future, Amorim remains hopeful that his compatriot will not have his head turned by the extraordinary riches on offer in Saudi Arabia. 'I think he wants to stay,' Amorim told reporters during United's post-season tour of Asia. 'He's really young, he's really good and he needs to be in the best league in the world. 'Of course, I'm the manager, I'm the coach, but sometimes it is the decision of the player. More Trending 'I talk with him and I explain things and I just have that feeling: when you talk to someone you have that feeling that they want to stay. 'Sometimes, in a lot of games this season, he was frustrated, but he knows what we are doing, so the feeling that I have every time I speak with him is that he wants to continue, for sure, with Manchester United, but you never know.' Asked whether United can afford to turn down the money that Al-Hilal are willing to pay for Fernandes, Amorim replied: 'Yes, we can find another way to earn money.' Fernandes' current contract with the Red Devils runs through to June 2027. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Match-winner Joe Root vows he still has ‘a lot to give' for England
In helping England move into an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match Metro Bank series, Root became his country's most prolific run-scorer, overhauling former captain Eoin Morgan's tally of 6,957. Player Of The Match 🏅 Who else? 👌 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 1, 2025 'It's a sign you're getting old, having played as many games as that,' the 34-year-old said with a smile after becoming the first Englishman to go past 7,000 ODI runs. Root, who is also England's record Test run-scorer and the top-ranked batter in that format, insisted he is nowhere near winding down and is as hungry as he ever was to add to his achievements. 'I want to give as much as I can for England for as long as I can,' he said. 'I've still got a lot to give and a lot more runs in there and hopefully, an innings like that shows that. 'Until that desire, that want to get better every day, want to add to the group and want to be not out at the end of a chase like that, when that's not a burning desire any more, it will be time to stop. 'It doesn't feel like that's anywhere near the case at the moment and I'll keep just trying to do my part in helping us win games and series down the line.' Joe Root became England's all-time leading run-scorer at Cardiff (Nick Potts/PA) Harry Brook has guided England to a first ODI series triumph since September 2023 after replacing Jos Buttler, who rarely had a full-strength squad to choose from when he led the white-ball sides. Root played just 19 ODIs between England's triumphant 2019 World Cup and the forgettable 2023 defence as priority was given to the Test side but he wants to be at the vanguard of rebuilding the 50-over team. 'I've played a huge amount of cricket with Jos and almost felt guilty that I wasn't able to be there for him throughout a lot of his tenure,' Root said. 'Now that there's more chances and more opportunities to play ODI cricket, I want to be involved in that. I want to play as much as I can for England. If I'm going to make the team better, then absolutely.' England had a ragged display in the field with four dropped catches – with Root shelling one – and two missed run-outs as Keacy Carty's 103 underpinned the Windies' total of 308 all out after 47.4 overs. Harry Brook led England to their first ODI series win since September 2023 (Nick Potts/PA) But having been 170 for two after 30 overs, the tourists faded as Adil Rashid took four wickets and Saqib Mahmood three and Root believes Brook's tactical acumen with field placings and game management came to the fore at a blustery Sophia Gardens. While claiming his fellow Yorkshireman is 'an idiot' off the field, Root, who helped England reel in the total with seven balls to spare, hailed Brook's cricketing smarts. 'As much as he's an idiot away from cricket – and I can say that because I've known him forever – he's very cricket intelligent,' Root added. 'He understands the game exceptionally well. 'I think that's what will make him a really good leader as well. I think you saw he might see the game slightly differently, and he might do things differently, but it asked different questions.'
