Delhi government schools to introduce one English medium section in every class

India Today10-07-2025
The Delhi government has directed all its schools to introduce at least one English-medium section in every class, beginning from the current academic year to broaden access to English-medium education. This initiative, announced by the Directorate of Education (DoE), aims to lay a stronger academic foundation for students eyeing careers in science, technology, and research.According to a circular issued on Tuesday, every Delhi government school must now ensure that, apart from regional language subjects, all other subjects in these designated sections are taught in English. Admission to these sections will depend on both the willingness and the aptitude of students.advertisementThe directive is an extension of earlier instructions issued in 2014 and 2018. It also mandates school heads to provide sufficient teaching and learning resources in English and to update all related records — including the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) portal — to reflect the change.
To ensure smooth implementation, district and zonal education officials have been tasked with regular monitoring and offering support where needed. The transition to English medium will be rolled out gradually, extending up to Class 12 in a phased approach.(With PTI inputs)- Ends

Trump administration to release over $5 billion in school funding after backlash

The administration of US President Donald Trump will release more than $5 billion in school funding that it had frozen earlier this month, following criticism from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, Reuters reported. The money, intended for K-12 education programmes, had been withheld as part of a review announced by the White House. States say a total of $6.8 billion in funding was affected, with $1.3 billion already released last week. In a statement sent by email, Madi Biedermann, a senior official at the US Department of Education, said, 'The Office of Management and Budget has completed its review … and has directed the Department to release all formula funds.' 'The agency will begin dispersing funds to states next week,' she added. No details of the review findings were provided. A senior Trump administration official told Reuters that some 'guardrails' would be attached to how the funds are used, but did not give specifics. The Washington Post first reported the release of the $5 billion. Earlier in July, the Trump administration said it had found indications that the money was being misused to support what it called a 'radical leftwing agenda.' The freeze affected funds for teacher training, migrant education, English language learning, and after-school programmes. The decision led to legal action by a group of mostly Democrat-led states. Ten Republican senators also wrote to the Trump administration urging it to reverse the funding freeze. Some Republican lawmakers welcomed Friday's announcement, while Democrats argued the money should never have been withheld. President Trump has repeatedly threatened to cut federal funding for schools and colleges over a range of issues, including climate policies, diversity initiatives, and pro-Palestinian protests related to Israel's war in Gaza.

'My mistake that caste census was not done in UPA tenure': Rahul Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said it was his mistake that the UPA govt did not conduct the caste census, adding the blame lies with him and not the party. He said he is correcting the mistake now by getting the census done, pointing to the exercise by the Congress-ruled Telangana which he dubbed as a model in social data collection which has created a "political earthquake" that is not visible. At the AICC's OBC convention "Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan", which was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, K C Venugopal, Siddaramaiah, Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot, Bhupesh Baghel, Gaurav Gogoi among others, Rahul said when he looks back at his 21 years in politics, he has scored well on the issues of poor, SCs, STs, minorities and women, but faltered on those of the backward classes. "I can see clearly that I faltered on one issue - the way I should have protected the OBC sections, I didn't do it. The reason was at that time, I did not understand your issues deeply," he said. Rahul said it is easier to comprehend the challenges faced by dalits and tribals because of their history, but those of OBCs are "hidden". "I regret if I knew your issues and history better, I would have got the caste census done. And I am going to correct it (the mistake) now." Modi is no big problem, Rahul tells party meet However, he argued it was a good mistake because a caste count then would not have yielded "the X-ray of society" as done by the Telangana census where now the participation of SC/ST/OBC at various levels of corporates in the state can be easily discerned. At the same time, the Gandhi scion exhorted the backwards to take the reins of the Congress. Pointing to the dais with CM Siddaramaiah, Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot, Bhupesh Baghel, V Narayanasamy, he said they are the 'icons' of the OBCs, but there is a need for more of them. At one point, Rahul said PM Narendra Modi is "all show and no substance", and does not pose a big challenge. He said after meeting, and being in the room, with Modi a few times, he has realised that the PM is a balloon inflated by the media. The remark came when Rahul's rhetorical question - what is the biggest problem of the backward communities -- elicited a stray shout of Modi. "I tell you, you have hyped it in your mind. Modi is no big problem," he said. Rahul said the problem of OBCs is that their history was killed by the RSS-BJP. "When you realise this, you would know that RSS is your biggest enemy," he added. He said BJP leaders claim they will remove English from India, but their own children study in the English medium. Kharge took a swipe at Modi by asking if he would retire at 75 years of age, as suggested by the RSS. He said Modi became OBC only after he became the CM of Gujarat and added his community to the OBC list.

HC pulls up CBI over Abhijit Sarkar case

1 2 3 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday reprimanded CBI sleuths working on the 2021 Abhijit Sarkar murder case, saying: "Your investigating officer is not investigating properly. " The court, which was hearing the bail plea of three accused, questioned whether the agency had confirmed whether TMC MLA Paresh Paul's cellphone tower location put him at the scene of the crime. Justice Jay Sengupta said if proper evidence was not placed before the court, the bench would have to consider granting bail. The judge also asked CBI whether a video, purportedly showing Paul making a threatening speech, was converted from Bengali to English, and asked the agency to gather other information on the MLA. Abhijit's mother Madhabi Sarkar had filed a complaint alleging that her son, a BJP worker, was assaulted by unknown miscreants on May 2, 2021, leading to his death. HC transferred the case to CBI on Aug 19, 2021. The agency said during the assembly election campaign, Paul delivered a provocative speech in which he named Abhijit as a troublemaker. The BJP worker was attacked 12 days later. Paul, Samaddar and Ghosh approached HC, claiming to be "victims" of CBI's atrocities. "The central agency is using their unethical force, violating the fundamental human rights, including the right to life, liberty, security, and freedom of the petitioners herein. The brutality of the central agency led to serious mental injuries and psychological trauma of the petitioners. Such excessive and unwarranted use of force by the central agency causes severe human rights violations of the petitioners," the bail application stated.
