Ilfenesh Hadera Brings ‘Highest 2 Lowest' Back to New York

It's a few hours before the the New York premiere of 'Highest 2 Lowest' at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and star Ilfenesh Hadera is calm, and feeling right at home. It was even closer to home for director Spike Lee, whose production company 40 Acres and a Mule is headquartered just a few blocks from BAM. 'We kind of got the nerves out and cut our teeth in Cannes, which was like the ultimate premiere. Now I feel like I can handle any red carpet,' says Hadera, who lives in Harlem. The film debuted out of competition at the prestigious French festival in May. 'I'm excited for the energy at this one here in Brooklyn, in New York. Obviously it'll be a whole different audience and different experience.' More from WWD Dick's Creates In-house Studio to Create Sports Films A Sofia Coppola Documentary on Marc Jacobs to Premiere in Star-studded 2025 Venice Film Festival Alexis Bittar and Bruce Cohen Debut 'Reclaim the Flag' Doc at Metrograph After Cannes, Hadera began working with stylist Erin Walsh, who is dressing her for the New York premiere in a brown tulle floor-length dress by Aknvas. ' Erin knows that I'm scared of color,' she says. 'Brown is not too scary for me.' At the moment, she's wearing a polka dot Patou blazer and miniskirt, a callback to her vintage polka-dot Lanvin gown, sourced from the Albright Fashion Library for the Cannes premiere. 'It was a scramble to find that,' she says, ' but it worked out in the end.' 'Highest 2 Lowest' marks an ongoing 15-year collaboration of working with Lee, who cast Hadera in her first narrative acting role, for an HBO pilot that didn't get picked up. ' Any chance to work with Spike is like a dream,' Hadera says. 'Since then, he's kept me in work and has been a supporter. And honestly, one of my dearest friends.' As the female lead, Hadera stars in the film opposite Denzel Washington; other costars include A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright and Ice Spice in her film debut. 'Highest 2 Lowest' is an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 Japanese movie, 'High and Low,' which Hadera only watched a month before they started shooting on location in New York. ' He [Lee] actually put me onto Kurosawa many years ago. Like any good student does, I said, gimme a list of all the movies I must see,' she says. 'When I saw that he was gonna be remaking 'High and Low,' I was like, 'Oh God, this is gonna be awesome.' So I immediately, like any actor does, reached out to my agent and I was like, 'Hey, has anyone in the office seen the script?'' Someone had read the script, and they had bad news: There wasn't a role for Hadera in it. Until there was. Hadera stars in the neo-noir thriller as Pam King, the wife of Washington's David King, a successful music executive whose plans for his company are jeopardized by a ransom demand: his son has been kidnapped. Maybe. ' Pam is a lover of music and art, a champion for and supporter of young artists. A devoted and loving mother and wife. Kind of the moral compass of the King family, and also fun and sweet,' says Hadera, describing her character. 'And she's got a great sense of style. I took so much of her closet home. ' I sent Spike an email and I said, 'Hey, Spike, there are a few things in Pam King's closet that I would love to keep,'' she continues. 'And he just forwarded the email to Francine Jamison-Tanchuck, who's our costume designer, and said like, let Ilfe keep whatever she wants. So I went to the wardrobe truck and I left with garment bags under my arms. I felt like it was 'Supermarket Sweepstakes' or something. I didn't get to keep the Cartier, but that was to be expected.' After the BAM premiere, Hadera and the cast were headed west for the film's premiere in Los Angeles, and then the actress will return to New York for some more press, and a little downtime, ahead of the film's Sept. 5 Apple TV+ streaming release. ' The movie's out Friday, so maybe I'll go see it in theaters incognito and see how it's received,' she adds. Sophie Cunningham Responds After Unexpected Offer From Lakers President Jeanie Buss

Sophie Cunningham Responds After Unexpected Offer From Lakers President Jeanie Buss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham recently got an unexpected shoutout from Los Angeles Lakers team president Jeanie Buss, who co-owns the all-female wrestling promotion Women of Wrestling, or WOW. According to Buss, Cunningham would be a great addition to the WOW roster, praising the Fever veteran for being 'talented, dedicated and a fierce competitor.' Sophie Cunningham Responds to WOW Invite Cunningham has now addressed the open invitation from the billionaire businesswoman. While the 6-foot-1 guard has not directly stated that she's going to be entering the wrestling ring soon, Cunningham did hint at the possibility of doing so. According to Fever reporter Brian Haenchen of Indy Star, Cunningham said that she would 'not not be interested' in potentially linking up with WOW once the WNBA season comes to an end. Cunningham expressed how big a fan of professional wrestling she was growing up, revealing that she 'religiously' followed the likes of Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Goldberg and Kane, whom Cunningham admitted she was 'scared (to death)' of. "The older I got, I didn't realize how staged it was,' Cunningham said, laughing. 'I thought it was real when I was little like everyone does. "But I think it's fun. Who knows (what the future holds)." Cunningham hasn't confirmed her decision to accept Buss's offer, but she certainly hasn't closed the door on the same. Sophie Cunningham Ventures Into Podcasting Cunningham marked a big move in her career off the court on Wednesday after she dropped the first episode of her new podcast entitled 'Show Me Something.' The 28-year-old excitedly discussed how she intends to drop her 'unfiltered' takes on her new show to give the fans what they want. "Nowadays you have to be so filtered and so careful about how you say things,' she said. 'People want real. People want positive things to cling onto. 'It's going to talk about anything and everything. It's going to be somewhere for people to go and have a good laugh and relax. It's nothing serious and I think that fits my vibe." Cunningham is hosting the podcast with good friend and TV star West Wilson, with new episodes streaming every story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 30, 2025, where it first appeared.

Pro Wrestling Promotion Eyeing Caitlin Clark Teammate: ‘Fierce Competitor'

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has caught the attention of some pro wrestling executives due to her fierce role as an enforcer for teammate Caitlin Clark. When the Fever signed Cunningham in the off-season, she made it quite clear that she was ready to support Clark and handle any intimidation or physical tactics opponents might dole out. 'Just the competitor that I am, I'm fierce, I'm sassy,' Cunningham said. 'I stick up for my teammates. I stick up for myself. Sometimes, I think that's okay to be feisty and be yourself.' She had a chance to prove herself in a game against the Connecticut Sun last month. Guard Jacy Sheldon poked Clark in the eye, and a dust-up ensued, followed by guard Marina Mabrey slamming the WNBA's top star to the floor. Cunningham did not waver on her promise to stick up for her teammate, delivering a hard foul to Sheldon in retaliation later in the quarter and getting herself ejected. Yeah, message sent. Sophie Cunningham – Basketball Player, Blonde Bombshell, and Now … Wrestler? Sophie Cunningham's physical style, highlighted by that flagrant foul that led to a brawl and ejections, apparently caught the eye of some professional wrestling executives. Women of Wrestling (WOW) co-owner Jeanie Buss (you may remember her as the President of the Los Angeles Lakers) praised Cunningham's talent and competitiveness, expressing interest in having her join the promotion. 'We would love to have [Sophie] join us at [WOW],' Buss wrote on X. 'She is talented, dedicated, and a fierce competitor!' She is all of those things. Buss has described the women of WOW as 'some of the strongest people I've ever met in my life,' and believes Cunningham would fit right in. David McLane, Buss's partner at WOW, concurs. 'I'm from Indiana. I'm from Indianapolis, and that's the home of not only the second-best basketball team in the country this last year, but the biggest name in professional basketball today, Caitlin Clark,' McClane told the Daily Mirror. 'And Caitlin Clark has an enforcer.' 'She's the Marty McSorley to Wayne Gretzky, and she is a stunning athlete,' he added. Not Just About Looks With apologies to McClane, I don't see McSorley when looking at that picture above. Which brings us to another point. Sophie Cunningham has other assets that would make her a good addition to WOW. McLane has an eye for these things. He is, after all, the creator of GLOW – Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Cunningham certainly fits the bill. She has always been a spectacular presence on social media, wowing fans with her game-day and event outfits. Prior to signing with Indiana, Sophie was flat-out breaking necks with her look at last year's WNBA All-Star Weekend. And who could forget the time the bombshell 'entered the villa'? But as Buss points out to the Mirror, this wrestling promotion isn't just about eye candy. It's about athelticism. Entertainment. 'David first invited me to come see women of wrestling,' Buss explained. 'I came up with every excuse I could not to because I thought it was mud wrestling or oil wrestling, jello wrestling, that's what it used to be back in the 90s.' 'And I am so proud of how far it's come. And all those images are out of your mind. It's a real sport, and these are real athletes.' Sophie Cunningham would be a perfect fit.
