Google is bringing an ‘Agent Mode' to the Gemini app

The Verge20-05-2025

Google is bringing an 'Agent Mode' to the Gemini app and making some updates to its Project Mariner tool, CEO Sundar Pichai announced at Google I/O 2025.
Project Mariner, Google's AI agent tool that can search the web for you, can now oversee up to 10 simultaneous tasks, Pichai said.
Pichai also shared details on a feature called Teach and Repeat. 'This is where you can show your task once, and it learns a plan for similar tasks in the future.' Project Mariner will be available 'more broadly' this summer, he said.
With Agent Mode in the Gemini app, you'll be able to give it a task to complete and the tool will go off and do it on your behalf, like with other AI agents. Pichai discussed an example of two people looking for an apartment in Austin, Texas. He said that the agent can find listings from sites like Zillow and use Project Mariner when needed to adjust specific filters.
An 'experimental' version of Agent Mode will be 'coming soon' for subscribers, Pichai said.

Pixel 10 Pro Launch Dates Are Later Than Expected

Pixel 9 Pro Fold Ewan Spence Google may be inviting a small pool of influencers to an early preview of the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro; however, the rest of the world might have to wait an extra week to see the latest Android-powered flagships. Initial reports suggested an event on Aug 13, but signs now point to a Made By Google event one week later. The new details come from the team at Android Headlines. The event will now take place on Wednesday, Aug 20, with the announced hardware going on retail sale on Thursday, Aug 28. While plans may change, Google is expected to announce four new handsets. The flagship Pixel 10 Pro and the larger Pixel 10 Pro XL will undoubtedly be the backbone of the four phones launched. These will come with the highest spec camera, memory, and storage options, tailored to Google's mobile artificial intelligence vision. Google's third foldable, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, will follow last year's trend and continue to be part of the main line of Pixels. The only non-Pro handset is the Pixel 10, and that might be the most interesting Pixel in terms of positioning and market impact, as I've noted previously: "While the headlines will no doubt focus on the extra features in the Pixel 10 Pro and the larger display of the Pixel 10 Pro XL, the Pixel 10 may have the heaviest impact on the market. The camera's hardware and software will be pushed to the limit, the latest version of Android will steer the conversation around mobile AI towards Google's vision, and the issue of the longevity of mid-range handsets will remain a point of discussion." The proposed dates of Aug 20 for launch and Aug 28 for availability would put the Pixel 10 launch one week later than last year's Pixel 9 family; 2024's Made By Google event was held on Aug 13, with retail releases on Aug 22 for the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL—he Pixel 9 Pro was delayed to Sept. 4. Now read more about the impact of the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro smartphones on the Android market...

‘Godfather Of AI' Launches Nonprofit Focused On Safer Systems

Yoshua Bengio testifies on the importance of AI regulation at a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee ... More hearing in July 2023. Computer scientist Yoshua Bengio, often referred to as the 'godfather' of AI, has launched a nonprofit aimed at creating AI systems that prioritize safety over business priorities. The organization, called LawZero, 'was founded in response to evidence that today's frontier AI models are developing dangerous capabilities and behaviors, including deception, self-preservation and goal misalignment,' reads a statement posted to its website on Tuesday. 'LawZero's work will help to unlock the immense potential of AI in ways that reduce the likelihood of a range of known dangers associated with today's systems, including algorithmic bias, intentional misuse and loss of human control.' LawZero is structured as a nonprofit 'to ensure it is insulated from market and government pressures, which risk compromising AI safety,' the statement says. Bengio is a worldwide leader in AI and a co-recipient of the 2018 A.M. Turing Award, the Association for Computing Machinery's prestigious annual prize that's sometimes called the Nobel Prize of Computing. He won the award alongside two other deep-learning pioneers — Geoffrey Hinton, another 'godfather of AI' who worked at Google, and Yann LeCun — for conceptual and engineering breakthroughs, made over decades, that have positioned deep neural networks as a critical component of computing. While artificial intelligence has sparked considerable excitement across industries — and Bengio recognizes its potential as a driver of significant innovation — it's also led to mounting concerns about possible pitfalls. Generative AI tools are capable of producing text, images and video that spread almost instantly over social media and can be difficult to distinguish from the real thing. Bengio has called for slowing the development of AI systems to better understand and regulate them. 'There is no guarantee that someone in the foreseeable future won't develop dangerous autonomous AI systems with behaviors that deviate from human goals and values,' the University of Montreal professor wrote in a blog post announcing why he'd signed a 2023 open letter calling for a slowdown in the development of some AI tools. He has signed other such statements, and appeared in front of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law to outline the risks of AI misuse. Bengio also serves as scientific director at Mila (Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms), an artificial-intelligence research institute. Now, he'll add LawZero president and scientific director to his resume. LawZero says it's assembling a team of world-class AI researchers, though it did not immediately respond to a request for comment on who is included in that group. Together, the scientists are working on a system called Scientist AI, which LawZero calls a safer, more secure alternative to many of the commercial AI systems being developed and released today. Scientist AI is non-agentic, meaning it doesn't have agency or work autonomously, but instead behaves in response to human input and goals. 'Such AI systems could be used to provide oversight for agentic AI systems, accelerate scientific discovery and advance the understanding of AI risks and how to avoid them,' LawZero says. 'LawZero believes that AI should be cultivated as a global public good—developed and used safely towards human flourishing.'

Reddit Sues AI Startup Anthropic Over Alleged AI Training

Reddit's lawsuit marks the first time a big tech company has filed a complaint against an AI startup. Reddit filed a lawsuit against AI startup Anthropic on Wednesday, alleging that the $61.5 billion startup used its site as training grounds for AI models without permission. In the 42-page complaint, which was filed in Northern California court on Wednesday, Reddit claimed that Anthropic violated Reddit's user agreement by using the site's data for commercial purposes. Anthropic has allegedly been training its AI models on posts made by Reddit users without their consent. Related: 'Faster, Smarter, and More Relevant': Reddit Tests AI That Combs the Site For You According to TechCrunch, the lawsuit marks the first time a big tech company has legally challenged an AI startup over the material it uses to train AI models. "We will not tolerate profit-seeking entities like Anthropic commercially exploiting Reddit content for billions of dollars without any return for redditors or respect for their privacy," Reddit's chief legal officer Ben Lee told TechCrunch in a statement. Meanwhile, in an emailed statement to CNBC, an Anthropic spokesperson stated, "We disagree with Reddit's claims and will defend ourselves vigorously." In July 2024, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman called out Anthropic, Microsoft, and Perplexity for unauthorizedly scraping the site for training data, and an Anthropic spokesperson assured Reddit that it had stopped. However, since then, Reddit claims to have registered that Anthropic's bots have crawled its site over 100,000 times, per the complaint. Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman. Photo by FREDERIC J. BROWN/AFP via Getty Images Other companies are using Reddit data for AI training, but only after signing formal agreements with the company. Reddit struck a $60 million licensing deal with Google in February 2024, which allowed Google to train its Gemini AI on Reddit data. Reddit inked a similar contract with OpenAI in May 2024, so the ChatGPT-maker can refine its AI models from Reddit posts. In the lawsuit against Anthropic, Reddit wrote that OpenAI and Google "are permitted to use public Reddit content but only after agreeing to Reddit's licensing terms," which include provisions to protect user privacy. Anthropic has not agreed to any terms and is using the site's data without permission, Reddit claims. The company said the purpose of the lawsuit is to seek damages. It's asking for a jury trial. Reddit went public in March 2024 and is valued at over $21 billion at the time of writing.
