Since leaving the White House in 2017, Michelle Obama has been pretty honest about her time as a First Lady.
But lately she's been digging deep into another role a lot more women can relate to: having a husband.
She even hosts a podcast, titled IMO , with her brother Craig Robinson, but the internet is up in arms about a conversation she had three years ago.
Back in 2022, Obama was part of an Angie Martinez-hosted Revolt round table where she was joined by Winnie Harlow, Kelly Rowland, H.E.R., and Tina Knowles.
This was around the time her book The Light We Carry was released, which focused on overcoming uncertainty in her career, marriage, and motherhood. While chatting about the book, she reveals that despite Barack Obama eventually becoming president, they had a hard time adjusting to life with kids, like everyone else.
'But the minute we had kids, it was like, 'Where are you going, and how far?' And you start measuring, it's like, 'How many diapers did you change?'' Michelle says, of the unfair split of labor with Barack. 'And 'oh, you're golfing? Oh, you got time? Oh, you got time to golf? How you at the gym all the time?''
The other women chime in with agreement as Michelle continues about the working dynamic and the stress of young kids.
'That's when all the measuring starts, because you got this project,' she said. 'Little kids, they're terrorists. They have demands, they don't talk, they're poor communicators, they cry all the time, they're irrational, they're selfish, and you love them more than anything, and so you can't blame them, right?'
She goes on to explain that the lesson she learned was that marriage isn't 50-50, and they both push and pull at different points in the relationship.
This isn't the first time Michelle has been candid about working through the kinks in her marriage, which she had brought up previously during Essence Fest in 2019. Despite their busy lives, she remembered getting mad at Barack for making time to go to the gym.
'This was right when we started going to counseling,' Obama said. 'And I think for us as women, many of us, we have a hard time putting ourselves on our own priority list, let alone at the top of it.'
Michelle Obama talking about the details of her marriage is great for other couples to see that relationships take work and aren't picture-perfect. B ut social media has taken offense to her statements, accusing her of complaining about being married to a busy man and airing out their dirty laundry on podcasts.
See below how the latest gender war is erupting on social media.

Michelle Obama reveals why her daughters tried to 'push away' from her and Barack

Former first lady Michelle Obama revealed on Monday that her daughters have tried to "push away" from her and her husband, former President Barack Obama. "Where do we begin?" Michelle said during an episode of Kate Hudson's podcast "Sibling Revelry,". "Our daughters are 26 and 23, they are young adult women. But they definitely went through a period in their teen years… it was the 'push away.'" She said that her daughters are trying to forge their own path and differentiate themselves from their famous parents. "They're still doing that, and you guys know this of children with parents who are known," Michelle continued. "You're trying to distinguish yourself. It's very important for my kids to feel like they've earned what they are getting in the world." The former first lady also said Sasha and Malia "don't want people to assume they don't work hard," or "that they're just naturally handed things." "They're very sensitive to that," Michelle Obama added on Hudson's podcast, talking about how she says her daughters want to make their own way, and addressing her daughter Malia's filmmaking. "They want to be their own people," Michelle said. "You know, Malia, who started in film, I mean, her first project, she took off her last name, and we were like, they're still going to know it's you, Malia. You know, but we respected the fact that she's trying to make her way. But now as they're older, I think they are embracing our parenting principles. They have a clearer understanding of why we did a lot of what we did. They understand us as full human beings." Michelle said she can identify with where her daughters have been because of her own life experience. "You know, I was that know-it-all kid in high school," she said. "But by the time I got to college and saw more of life, I realized, our parents are flawed. They're our heroes. We love them. But you start seeing them as humans and start appreciating them. I think our kids are moving into that." "They didn't want to be little princesses in the White House. They wanted to push the envelope. They needed some rope," she said at one point.

Barack and Michelle Obama have date night at George Clooney's Broadway play amid divorce rumors

Barack and Michelle Obama attended Tuesday night's performance of George Clooney's Broadway show, The Independent can reveal. The couple, in a rare joint public appearance, dined at The Lowell Hotel restaurant in Midtown Manhattan before the show, multiple reports indicated. Michelle was seen in a black lacy midi dress with her hair swept back in a long braid, while Barack was seen in a standard dark suit. Flanked by Secret Service members, the two were then ushered into a Black SUV and whisked away to the Winter Garden Theater to see Clooney as Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck. Their attendance was confirmed by a representative for the production. The stage adaptation of his 2005 film of the same name marked the A-lister's Broadway debut and garnered him a 2025 Tony Award nomination. The Obamas have been the subject of divorce rumors for several months following Michelle's absence from a handful of high-profile events at the start of the year, including former President Jimmy Carter's funeral and President Donald Trump's inauguration. She recently opened up about her decision to skip the events in an April episode of her podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson. 'My decision to skip the inauguration, what people don't realize, or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year that suited me were met with such ridicule and criticism,' she said. 'People couldn't believe that I was saying no for any other reason, that they had to assume that my marriage was falling apart, you know.' She reiterated that she simply didn't go to the inauguration because it was the best decision for her. 'I'm here really trying to own my life and intentionally practice making the choice that was right for me,' she explained. 'And it took everything in my power to not do the thing that was right, or that was perceived as right, but do the thing that was right for me. That was a hard thing for me to do.' The former First Lady also spoke about the divorce rumors during an appearance on Sophia Bush's Work in Progress podcast earlier in April. 'The interesting thing is that, when I say 'no,' for the most part people are like, 'I get it, and I'm OK,'' she said. 'That's the thing that we as women, I think we struggle with disappointing people. I mean, so much so that this year people couldn't even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.' 'This couldn't be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right?' she added. 'But that's what society does to us. We start actually, finally going, 'What am I doing? Who am I doing this for?' And if it doesn't fit into the sort of stereotype of what people think we should do, then it gets labeled as something negative and horrible.'

Michelle Obama reveals daughters are still ‘pushing away' from fame

Michelle Obama has opened up about how her two daughters are continuing to separate themselves from their well-known parents. The former First Lady and her older brother Craig Robinson appeared on Monday's episode of the Sibling Revelry podcast with Kate Hudson and her brother Oliver Hudson. Michelle discussed her oldest daughter Malia's decision not to include her last name on the credits of her directorial debut. 'Where do we begin?' Michelle said. 'Our daughters are 26 and 23, they are young adult women. But they definitely went through a period in their teen years…it was the 'push away.'' She continued: 'They're still doing that, and you guys know this of children with parents who are known. You're trying to distinguish yourself. It's very important for my kids to feel like they've earned what they are getting in the world.' Michelle said that her children want to make sure people don't assume they don't work hard or are 'handed things' because of who their parents are. 'They want to be their own people,' she said. The mother of two then referenced Malia's directorial debut at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival with The Heart. However, instead of the film's credits listing her as Malia Obama, she used her first and middle name, Malia Ann. 'We were like, 'They're still going to know it's you, Malia,'' she recalled telling her daughter. 'But we respected the fact that she's trying to make her way.' Michelle's husband, Barack Obama, has also previously discussed Malia's decision to leave off her last name in film credits during an appearance on The Pivot Podcastback in October 2024. At the time, he said he wasn't surprised by her choice. 'The challenge for us is letting us give them any help at all,' he said about both Malia and his 23-year-old daughter, Sasha. 'I mean they're very sensitive about this stuff. They're very stubborn about it.' Despite Malia wanting to separate herself from the family name professionally, her father reminded her that people may still recognize her regardless. 'I was all like, 'You do know they'll know who you are,'' Barack said on the podcast. 'And she's all like, 'You know what? I want them to watch it that first time and not in any way have that association.' So I think our daughters go out of their way to not try to leverage that.' However, as the Obama children have grown up, they have received more and more media attention. 'Now, as they've gotten older, there's been some paparazzi stuff going on, and it drives them nuts,' the former president said. 'Their attitude is, 'We're not looking for all that.' So they're grounded.'
