High-calibre firearms recovered following Meyerton CBD shootout
MEYERTON – The police have recovered a cache of illegal firearms following a dramatic shootout between two rival security companies at the taxi rank on the morning of May 20. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that officers recovered 10 AK-47 rifles and nine 9mm pistols at the scene while combing the area after the incident.
The motive for the shootout is still under investigation. The incident during peak traffic near the busy taxi rank in Meyerton's central business district (CBD) sent shockwaves through the community. One person, reportedly affiliated with one of the security firms, sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital.
Police went to the school and verified that no scholar was injured during the shooting.
In a separate report by Vaalweekblad earlier today, it was revealed that a learner from Hoërskool Dr. Malan was struck by a stray bullet, prompting concern and outrage from parents.
However, police have disputed this claim, stating that no learner was injured.
The use of military-grade firearms, such as AK-47s, in a public setting has raised serious concerns about the presence and conduct of private security companies operating in the area.

Mpumalanga Police launch manhunt after on-duty cop gunned down
Mpumalanga police launched a manhunt for suspects following the fatal shooting of an on-duty police officer in Phakane, Pienaar, on Friday. Const Donald Mathebula, 34, was found inside his private vehicle in uniform when police arrived at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital, and he was declared dead on arrival. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane said preliminary investigations suggested the deceased stopped at a tuckshop when three suspects armed with firearms and wearing balaclavas approached and shot him. 'The member drove his vehicle in an attempt to flee. He was shot, the vehicle lost control, hit a tree, and the car came to a standstill, and nothing was taken. 'The vehicle had bullet holes on the rear side and the right side of the window. The three suspects fled the scene,' said Ndubane. She said the deceased was identified as Constable Donald Mathebula, who was stationed at Pienaar police station, serving under the visible policing unit. He had served the South African Police Service for ten years. 'It is believed Mathebula was ambushed and fatally shot by the suspects while visiting the area. The motive of the attack is not known yet, and police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing' . Acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi, has mobilised a 72-hour activation plan to ensure that all necessary resources are deployed to trace and arrest the perpetrators Police have asked anyone with information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects to contact the nearest police station. Tip-offs can also be reported anonymously via crime stop number on 08600 10111 or through the MYSAPS App. Meanwhile, Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security, and liaison, Jackie Macie, called members of the public who have any clues on the suspects' whereabouts to come forward and report to the police. Macie said police should spare no effort in ensuring that the suspects are swiftly brought to book. 'In honouring the memory of the deceased and many other members who have lost their lives to criminals, the police must urgently arrest the suspects. Members must remain relentless in their efforts to serve and protect communities. 'They should not be deterred by attacks on their colleagues. Those who attack law enforcement officers, whether on or off duty, are attacking the state and therefore such individuals must be harshly punished,' said Macie.

Suspect carjacker denied bail
A 25-year-old suspect was denied bail by the Pretoria Magistrate's Court for a case of possession of a stolen vehicle. The arrest took place on May 30, around 18:00, by the Pretoria Central SAPS's Crime Prevention Team in partnership with Tracker. Spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise said the team received a lookout call via radio control. They followed the lead and shortly afterwards, and managed to corner the stolen vehicle on Eeufees Street, near the N14. 'All the relevant stakeholders were called to the scene. The suspect was later taken in for detention and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle while the vehicle was booked in at the exhibit store VIS unit. Upon profiling, it was discovered that the suspect has a pending case related to car stealing and possession of dagga with cases at other police stations within the province,' Nkhumise said. The team, consisting of three constables, namely Freedom Sambo, Nyiko Olifants, and Nhlayiso Zitha, and the tracker team, managed to corner the vehicle at the above-mentioned address. The vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux 2.4 GD6 bakkie, had an estimated worth of R200 000. The station commander Brigadier Gibin Hlengani Mashaba welcomed the arrest and applauded all the role players for their efforts to put the suspect behind bars. He stated that the case has been allocated to the branch detectives, and they will ensure that the case receives a good conviction. Motorists are urged to be vigilant and very cautious of their surroundings, and also to take safety precautions while travelling at any time of the day. Police advised residents to avoid offering lifts, as this is also one of the leading factors causing hijackings. The suspect was remanded into custody and will reappear at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court at a later date, pending further investigation. Fake lawyer sentenced in Bethal court, immediately rearrested for fraud
The Bethal Magistrate's Court sentenced a man to four years' imprisonment or a fine of R20 000 for impersonating a lawyer in court. Ironically, while Doctor Sobetha (32) was still in court after being sentenced yesterday, June 5, he was arrested again for fraud that he allegedly committed in Moroka, Gauteng, in 2023. Following his sentence, the court ordered Sobetha to pay back the money amounting to R40 000 that he had charged his client in 2019, payable in instalments of R3 000 per month. The client was facing a murder charge and Sobetha represented him during his bail application. The state prosecutor could pick up from Sobetha's arguments that something was not adding up. He was requested to provide proof in court that he was indeed a legal practitioner but failed to do so,' said the Mpumalanga Hawks' spokesperson, Colonel Magonseni Nkosi. Nkosi said the Secunda-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation members that were in court immediately arrested him after which the matter was referred to the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation for further inquiry. He said Sobetha was granted bail in 2024 and absconded, resulting in a warrant of arrest being authorised against him. 'An investigation led members of the Hawks' Tactical Operations Management System to Durban, where the suspect was arrested on May 22 this year,' said Nkosi. The matter was postponed and Sobethu was remanded in custody until he appeared in the same court again yesterday. He pleaded guilty and the court sentenced immediately. Two of his four-year sentence was suspended for five years on the condition that he is not found guilty of a similar offence during that period. The Mpumalanga head of the Hawks, Major General Nico Gerber, warned people to consult with registered legal advisers. 'It is concerning if people are defrauded by people like Sobetha whose formal education does not even go beyond high school level,' concluded Gerber.
