Mpumalanga Police launch manhunt after on-duty cop gunned down
Const Donald Mathebula, 34, was found inside his private vehicle in uniform when police arrived at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital, and he was declared dead on arrival.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane said preliminary investigations suggested the deceased stopped at a tuckshop when three suspects armed with firearms and wearing balaclavas approached and shot him.
'The member drove his vehicle in an attempt to flee. He was shot, the vehicle lost control, hit a tree, and the car came to a standstill, and nothing was taken.
'The vehicle had bullet holes on the rear side and the right side of the window. The three suspects fled the scene,' said Ndubane.
She said the deceased was identified as Constable Donald Mathebula, who was stationed at Pienaar police station, serving under the visible policing unit.
He had served the South African Police Service for ten years.
'It is believed Mathebula was ambushed and fatally shot by the suspects while visiting the area. The motive of the attack is not known yet, and police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing' .
Acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi, has mobilised a 72-hour activation plan to ensure that all necessary resources are deployed to trace and arrest the perpetrators
Police have asked anyone with information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects to contact the nearest police station.
Tip-offs can also be reported anonymously via crime stop number on 08600 10111 or through the MYSAPS App.
Meanwhile, Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security, and liaison, Jackie Macie, called members of the public who have any clues on the suspects' whereabouts to come forward and report to the police.
Macie said police should spare no effort in ensuring that the suspects are swiftly brought to book.
'In honouring the memory of the deceased and many other members who have lost their lives to criminals, the police must urgently arrest the suspects. Members must remain relentless in their efforts to serve and protect communities.
'They should not be deterred by attacks on their colleagues. Those who attack law enforcement officers, whether on or off duty, are attacking the state and therefore such individuals must be harshly punished,' said Macie.

Police on the hunt for hijackers
Gauteng police are hot on the heels of suspects who abandoned a BMW X5 in Kaalfontein and fled the scene on foot into the Themba Khoza informal settlement. The suspects, the number of which is not yet known, were allegedly involved in an attempted truck hijacking in Sandton on August 8. Read more: Police arrest suspect in connection with hijacking a courier van in Sandton Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said members of the Johannesburg Flying Squad received a report to look out for a black BMW X5, which was later spotted in Midrand, where a high-speed chase began, all the way to Kaalfontein, about 8.8km away. 'The suspects abandoned the car and fled on foot into the informal settlement. Inside the vehicle, police found two firearms, with a magazine loaded with ammunition, blue lights, and SAPS reflector jackets. The search for the suspects is currently underway.' Two police helicopters were deployed to assist in the search, with shots fired, but no casualties were reported. Masondo said their preliminary investigation revealed that the X5 was hijacked in Germiston last month, while one of the two recovered firearms was stolen in Ivory Park. Masondo said they believe that the suspects are part of a syndicate behind multiple truck hijackings. 'Their modus operandi involves posing as police officers, pulling trucks over, hijacking them, and making off with the goods.' This is an ongoing investigation and more information will be provided as it becomes available. Police urged to act as 2 million illegal firearms are circulating in South Africa
Millions of illegal firearms are circulating in South Africa. This is in addition to the approximately 2.7 million legal firearms owned by private citizens, according to s tudies by Gun Free South Africa (GFSA). The high number of illegal firearms contributes to South Africa's high rate of gun violence, where firearms are the weapon of choice in many crimes, including murder. In the first six months of the most recent reported period, over 12 700 people were killed, averaging 70 murders per day. The illegal firearms trade is a serious concern, with some estimates suggesting there is one illegal firearm for every legal firearm. Civil society groups are calling for amendments to the Firearms Control Act to address the issue. Now Rise Mzansi has warned that an estimated two million illegal firearms circulating in South Africa are posing a serious threat to public safety. The party has criticised the South African Police Service (SAPS) for failing to track the specific makes of firearms used in crimes properly, a shortfall it says undermines crime analysis and detection efforts. In a written parliamentary reply to Rise Mzansi, the Minister of Police revealed that SAPS's Enhanced Firearms Register System (EFRS) does not capture the specific makes of firearms, only their types, such as handguns, shotguns, or rifles. This means the system is unable to identify weapons like the AK-47, Norinco, or AKM, all of which have reportedly been used in violent crimes across South Africa. Rise Mzansi Member of Parliament and National Assembly Caucus Whip Makashule Gana said the lack of detailed firearm data hampers the country's ability to track and remove illegal weapons from communities. 'Currently, the data provided in the EFRS can only differentiate in terms of firearm types (handgun, shotgun or rifle), not makes (AK47, Norinco, AKM),' the Minister of Police stated in response to the party's questions. Rise Mzansi submitted a series of questions to the Minister in an attempt to determine how prevalent the AK-47 is in the commission of crimes, citing widespread reports of the weapon's use in violent incidents, including cash-in-transit heists, political killings, and mass shootings. The AK-47 is prohibited under the South African Firearms Control Act, yet continues to appear at crime scenes, said Gana. 'These guns should not be on the streets!' Gana said, warning that an estimated two million illegal firearms are circulating in South Africa. 'None of us is safe,' he added. The party has called on SAPS to boost its crime intelligence capacity and develop systems to identify and confiscate illegal weapons more effectively. It has also urged the government to expand national firearms amnesties and introduce an anonymous reward system for tip-offs about illegal firearms. Gana stressed the need for harsh consequences for those involved in the illegal firearm trade. 'The prosecuting authorities must seek the harshest mandatory punishment for the possession and sale of illegal firearms,' he said.

Mkhwanazi praised for giving R40k donation to kids of slain cops
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has been praised over his decision to donate over R40 000 raised through a BackaBuddy public initiative towards a charity. Last month, notorious X troll Chris Excel launched a crowdfunding initiative to gift Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi two cows as a 'token of appreciation.' The initiative was a hit, raising R44 000 for the top cop who went public with allegations of corruption within the police department. In a clip posted on social media, Mkhwanazi thanked those who had donated to the initiative. He said, 'I appreciate the gesture and the thoughts of goodwill behind the idea of contributing money. I'm a civil servant, and the public already thanks me enough through the salary I receive every month. It is their taxes that compensate us. I'm privileged to be one of those chosen few to serve and protect the people of South Africa through my role as a police officer'. Mkhwanazi appealed to BackaBuddy and Chris Excel to deposit the cash into the SAPS Educational Trust instead. He continued: 'This is a fund that pays for the educational needs of children of SAPS who died in the line of duty. We have already seen some of these children who have graduated as a result of the support of this fund. 'It is the least that the police can do to support the families and children of our fallen colleagues'. Mkhwanazi added that an independent board of trustees ran the fund. Although Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi graciously gave away the gift intended for him, authorities have claimed he was well within his rights to accept it. KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, told The South African that police may accept gifts for any reason, provided that they declare that it is not a gratification. 'There is a gift register in the SAPS that police officers sign to declare all gifts', he said. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's selfless act has been widely praised by social media users, including Action SA leader Herman Mashaba. He posted: 'This public servant, Nhlahla Mkhwanazi, is absolutely an amazing man. This country is fortunate to have such an individual within the ranks of the SAPS'. Here's what others had to say… General Mkhwanazis ethics and Ubuntu is unparalleled, he represents the best of SAs public servants. — Prof Moya (@MoyaProf) August 13, 2025 This is a beautiful display of ubuntu in action — a community showing gratitude to a leader who has served with integrity. In times where trust in leadership is scarce, it's powerful to see citizens willingly give back, not because they must, but because they believe the man is… — ZoeM 😌 | Chaos & Charisma (@ZolekaMaseko15) August 13, 2025 When police officers die protecting us, the least we can do is ensure their children's futures are secure. School fees, uniforms, stationery – these basics shouldn't be a struggle for families who've already given everything.
