More electric cars eligible for new Government grants
Thirteen more electric car models are eligible for new Government grants. Drivers can save £1,500 with the purchase of certain Nissan, Renault and Vauxhall models, the Department for Transport (DfT) said. The discount will be automatically applied at the point of sale. This comes after four Citroen cars were announced as the first grant-eligible models on Tuesday. More models are expected to be approved in the coming weeks as manufacturers' applications are assessed against sustainability standards. The new £650 million electric car grant scheme enables motorists purchasing some new electric cars costing up to £37,000 to save either £1,500 or £3,750, depending on the vehicle's green credentials. All models announced so far are eligible for grants of £1,500. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: 'With discounts on 17 car models announced this week alone, we're delivering on our promise to make it easier and cheaper for families to go electric. 'This is about backing drivers, putting money back into people's pockets and creating the jobs and growth that will drive Britain forward.' The DfT has previously said many drivers cite upfront costs as a 'key barrier' to buying an EV and the grant will bring down prices so they 'more closely match their petrol and diesel counterparts'. However, shadow transport secretary Richard Holden said: 'Labour ministers' decision to hand £650 million of taxpayers' money to foreign car companies, for cars made in foreign countries, is deranged. 'This latest mess with a confused rollout and botched incentives is only making things worse. 'Labour has put ideological obsession ahead of hard pressed taxpayers, who are staring down the barrel of billions in tax rises to come after Labour's disastrous massive tax hike budget last year that has already seen over 100,000 people join the dole queue. 'Labour's heavy-handed meddling is damaging confidence, placing British jobs at risk, and putting the brakes on competition. 'Consumers and the market should be trusted to drive the transition to cleaner technologies, not this clueless Government.' RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: 'Another wave of cars qualifying for the Government's revamped electric car grant is yet more welcome news. 'It's also very positive to see other manufacturers that don't meet the grant's green production targets lowering their prices. 'Those looking to make the switch now have a wider choice of better-value vehicles than ever before. This can only help speed up the transition to electric motoring.' Online vehicle marketplace Auto Trader said it has seen a spike in interest for electric cars since the grant was announced, with interest in some brands trebling. James Taylor, managing director of Nissan Motor GB, said the announcement that its models will be eligible is 'an exciting step in the UK's electrification journey'. Steve Catlin, his counterpart at Vauxhall, said the manufacturer has been 'committed to electrifying Britain for years'. Under the Government's zero emission vehicle (Zev) mandate, at least 28% of new cars sold by each manufacturer in the UK this year must be zero emission, which generally means pure electric. Across all manufacturers, the figure during the first half of the year was 21.6%. Colin Walker, head of transport at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit think tank, warned that the impact of the electric car grant scheme could be 'undermined' by recent changes to the Zev mandate which mean it will be easier for manufacturers who do not meet the targets to avoid fines. He added that this risks 'driving down EV sales'. The Government has pledged to ban the sale of new fully petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2030. Here are the models eligible for the electric car grant:Citroen: e-C3, e-C4, e-C5 and Alpine A290, Megane, 4, 5 and Micra and Ariya (discounts on the Ariya will be available at dealerships from August 13)Vauxhall: Corsa Electric, Combo Life Electric, Astra Electric, Mokka Electric, Frontera Electric and Grandland Electric.

Lucky 13 more cars confirmed for Electric Car Grant… but there's a catch
The hatchback of the moment is amongst a raft of 13 cars from Renault, Alpine, Nissan and Vauxhall confirmed to receive the government's Electric Car Grant, bringing the starting price of the retro-styled Renault 5 supermini down to just £21,495. The new models are in addition to six Citroens confirmed earlier this week. Advertisement - Article continues below But no car has yet qualified for the higher £3,750 amount, with all 19 now announced models coming in at the lower £1,500 level. Buyers will now be able to secure a grant on a new 5, as well as other EV models in the Renault line-up such as the boxier Renault 4 (now £25,495), the Renault Megane hatchback (now £30,995) and the Renault Scenic SUV (now £35,495). Check the latest prices through Auto Express' Find A Car service and see what you can save on a new EV. Furthermore, if the 5 isn't quite sporty enough for you, Renault has confirmed that the R5's sporty sibling, the Alpine A290 will also qualify, although the most-powerful GTS model doesn't make the cut, as this costs over the £37,000 threshold. The 5's cutesier cousin, the Nissan Micra (which shares many of its parts and matches the Renault on price) will also get the government £1,500 discount, as will the larger Nissan Ariya SUV. This previously started from £39,655, with Nissan chopping enough from the list price to get the entry Engage trim below £37,000. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below The entire Vauxhall EV range will also get the official government grant, following the brand pre-emptively announcing a company-backed alternative in the interim. The electric versions of the Vauxhall Corsa, Mokka, Frontera, Astra and Grandland will all benefit from a £1,500 grant. Advertisement - Article continues below Citroen was first to confirm its entire EV line-up would be eligible for the grant early this week, across the e-C3, e-C3 Aircross – including the longer-range model announced last week – and e-C4, plus the new e-C5 Aircross and e-Berlingo, all of which only qualify for £1,500 of funding per vehicle. While any discount is undoubtedly good news for buyers, it does beg the question as to how eco-friendly a car needs to be in order to qualify for the top-level £3,750 grant from the government. There's also the question of brands having (or not having) the appropriate Science-Based Target Initiative (SBT) accreditation. This displays a firm's commitment to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, working towards a target of net-zero, and is mandatory for receiving the government's grant. However, speaking to industry insiders, Auto Express understands that there are brands with parallel certifications representing similar climate goals that are unable to receive the grant because they don't specifically have an SBT. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Therefore, as more cars are announced for the grant, and we are aware of several brands that have completed the application process and are awaiting confirmation, there may be some glaring omissions from the list as companies without the stipulated accreditation argue their case to the government in hope of receiving the much-coveted discount. Advertisement - Article continues below Auto Express has approached the Department for Transport for comment on this issue, but is yet to receive a response. "The confirmation that more affordable, practical EVs have been approved for the Electric Car Grant is exactly what the market needsData from Carwow's platform shows that buyers are ready to act; demand for EVs under £37,000 jumped 124 per cent in the week following the scheme's announcement. Interest in already-approved models has surged, and we expect these newly added vehicles to draw immediate attention. We welcome the support of the Electric Car Grant for every electric model in the Vauxhall line-up - including those manufactured here at our Ellesmere Port plant - and hope this will enable more British motorists to enjoy the benefits of switching to electric.' 'Nissan has always been electric vehicle pioneers and this announcement is an exciting step in the UK's electrification journey. Micra and Ariya are first, and we have three new EVs on their way, including the all-electric British-built Leaf which will go on sale later this year.' 'We have been asking Government to match its environmental ambition with action to accelerate demand for electric vehicles, and it has delivered on that with the creation of the Electric Car Grant (ECG). 'Moving forward, it is critical that manufacturers, charging infrastructure providers and Government continue to collaborate as a team to build the required electric vehicle ecosystem, building on the positivity that this latest scheme injects into the market.' 'Another wave of cars qualifying for the Government's revamped Electric Car Grant is yet more welcome news. It's also very positive to see other manufacturers that don't meet the grant's green production targets lowering their prices. Those looking to make the switch now have a wider choice of better value vehicles than ever before. This can only help speed up the transition to electric motoring." The 13 new EVs that now qualify for the electric car grant
Thirteen new electric cars have seen their prices slashed after qualifying for the Government's Electric Car Grant (ECG) - taking the grand total to 17 models eligible for the scheme. Nissan, Renault and Vauxhall are the latest brands to be given the go ahead for the 'green' grant which sees battery models meeting stringent technical and environmentally sustainability criteria receive government subsidies. The 13 models across the four brands are all eligible for the lower £1,500 grant band. This is applied immediately to On the Road (OTR) prices. These thirteen models join the four Citroen models announced earlier this week – the firsts to receive the ECG. The most recent update to the list of eligible EVs comes just over three weeks after Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced the £650million electric car grant for new EVs priced at or under £37,000. The grant is tiered so the amount available per vehicle (on or under the £37,000 price cap) depends on the level of emissions associated with the production of the vehicle; the most sustainable get £3,750 while those failing to meet the strict green targets are still rewarded with £1,500 off. Those failing to meet the minimum environmental criteria receive no subsidy at all. The new eligible models include five cars from Renault, two from Nissan and six from Vauxhall. Nissan's all-electric Micra has been confirmed ahead of the reinvented nameplate officially going on sale on 1 September, so buyers will be able to enjoy the discounted starting price of £21,495, down from £22,995 as soon as it hits the streets. Nissan has also had its Ariya SUV confirmed for the Band 2 £1,500 discount. The new Nissan Leaf hasn't been included in the announcement which suggests it is likely to qualify for the full Band 1, £3,750 ECG - something confirmed by Nissan who say it is 'anticipated it will get the highest-level grant of £3,750'. Pricing for this model has yet to be announced. The Nissan Micra is being built in France, and shares the same platform with the Renault 5, whereas the Leaf is being built at Sunderland – which is currently undergoing a EV36Zero project that will see the home of Nissan in the UK turn into a flagship EV hub, bringing together electric vehicles, renewable energy and battery production. James Taylor, managing director of Nissan GB, commented: 'With the grant confirmed today, we are thrilled to see Micra and Ariya becoming even better value for our customers. 'The Micra will be joined by three new models including the third generation British-built Leaf later this year and the Juke in 2026, also coming from our Sunderland plant.' But, as with the Citroen models already announced, there's been no detailed explanation from the Department for Transport as to why these models have failed to achieve the higher, £3,750 ECG band, and have only been awarded the £1,500 amount. The DfT previously told the Daily Mail that it won't comment on individual manufacturer's specific applications. The Government's is only awarding the grant to the electric car makers that show they put sustainable production first 'in recognition of the need to address embedded carbon emissions across a vehicle's lifetime, as well as tailpipe emissions'. At a minimum, this means the manufacturer must hold a verified Science Based Target, verified by the independent SBT Initiative and in line with the Paris Agreement goals. Emissions from vehicle production are then assessed against the carbon intensity of electricity grid in the country where vehicle assembly and battery production are located. Which models will now receive £1,500? We've already mentioned the Nissan Micra and Ariya both receive the £1,500, bringing their starting prices down to £21,495 and £38,165 respectively. Renault's Alpine A290, Megane, Scenic, R4 and R5 EVs will all receive the same discount, bringing the R5 down to £21,495 for the entry-level version and £25,495 for the R4 entry-level. Renault has confirmed that every new EV will start from under £37,000 and that the new ECG will be applied to all orders taken from 16 July, backdating the discount to customers who bought any of the eligible models from that date - a standalone act of generosity so far. Adam Wood, Managing Director of Renault UK, said: 'We have been asking Government to match its environmental ambition with action to accelerate demand for electric vehicles, and it has delivered on that with the creation of the Electric Car Grant (ECG).' Edmund King , AA president, pointed to the Renault models as appealing options, saying: 'This new round of £1,500 discounts makes some incredibly good cars more affordable. 'In particular, we can envisage the order books for the Renault 5 and Renault Alpine A290 growing because of this discount.' Vauxhall already has its own ' electric car grant ' out (until 31 August) which sees the same £1,500 offered to customers buying any of its electric EVs. The Stellantis owned brand brought out its privately funded grant – as have many other manufacturers - 'to make the switch to electric as attainable as possible'. The Government discounts are automatically applied at the point of sale, leaving customers free from tiresome paperwork. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: 'With discounts on seventeen car models announced this week alone, we're delivering on our promise to make it easier and cheaper for families to go electric.' The Government will announce more ECG model in the coming weeks as they approve applications as fast as manufacturers file them When will we know which other EVs will get the ECG? The Government has said that more models are expected to be approved in the coming weeks as manufacturers' applications are assessed against the scheme's sustainability standards. The DfT confirmed to This is Money that applications are being processed as fast as manufacturers can file them. Car buyers will need to check the Government website every now and then to whether the full list of eligible models has been updated. Each car maker should flag up any models that have qualified on their own websites too. RAC head of policy Simon Williams commented: 'Another wave of cars qualifying for the Government's revamped Electric Car Grant is yet more welcome news. It's also very positive to see other manufacturers that don't meet the grant's green production targets lowering their prices.'
