World Bank retains India's FY26 growth at 6.3% as trade tensions bite countries globally

Time of Indiaa day ago

The World Bank on Tuesday pegged India's economic growth projection at a lower level of 6.3 per cent for 2025-26 due to pressure on exports emanating from global uncertainties, though the country will remain the fastest growing major global economy.
In April, the World Bank had lowered India's growth projection for 2025-26 to 6.3 per cent from its January forecast of 6.7 per cent.
According to the World Bank's latest Global Economic Prospects report, heightened trade tensions and policy uncertainty are expected to drive global growth down this year to its slowest pace since 2008 outside of outright global recessions.

No merchant discount rate on UPI transactions

New Delhi: The government is fully committed to promoting digital payments via Unified Payment Interface (UPI), the finance ministry said Wednesday, adding there will be no merchant discount rate (MDR) on UPI transactions . MDR is a rate charged to a merchant for the payment processing of debit and credit card transactions. "Speculation and claims that the MDR will be charged on UPI transactions are completely false, baseless and misleading," it said in a statement, adding that such speculations cause needless uncertainty, fear and suspicion among the citizens. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bank Owned Properties For Sale In Damai Bahagia (Prices May Surprise You) Foreclosed Homes | Search ads Search Now Undo To promote digital transactions, MDR was made zero from January 2020 for RuPay debit cards and BHIM-UPI transactions through amendments in Section 10A of the Payments and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 and Section 269SU of the Income Tax Act, 1961. To support the payment ecosystem participants in effective delivery of services, "Incentive scheme for promotion of RuPay debit cards and low-value BHIM-UPI transactions (P2M)" has been implemented, the government said in March. Only UPI (P2M) transactions up to ₹2,000 for small merchants are covered under the scheme.

Liquor excise duty hiked to cover last fiscal losses?

Nagpur: The state government may have approved a hike in excise duty on liquor with an eye on raising an additional ₹14,000 crore, but data reveals that the excise department failed to meet its revenue target in the last fiscal year in Nagpur. The excise department collected over ₹825 crore during the financial year ending March 2025, which was more than 20% below the target. Collections across the entire Nagpur division — which includes Gondia, Bhandara, and Chandrapur districts in addition to Nagpur — also fell short. The total mop-up in the division stood at ₹872 crore, missing the target by 20%. In the first two months of the current financial year, the department has collected ₹111 crore. The revenue target for Nagpur district has been set at ₹1,051 crore. Based on a monthly break-up, the excise department needs to collect around ₹175 crore per month to meet the target. The current mop-up stands at 63% below the required mark. In FY 2024-25, over 4.7 crore litres of liquor were produced by various entities in the district. Country liquor accounted for the majority at 3.8 crore litres, followed by 40 lakh litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), and over 50 lakh litres of beer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo While production of country liquor and beer remained as expected, IMFL production declined by 6.4 lakh litres, which sources attributed as one of the primary reasons for the revenue shortfall. Sources said that despite a year-on-year increase in actual collections, the targets could not be achieved. The collections include both excise duty and licence renewal fees paid by vendors. Excise duty is levied at the manufacturing stage and passed on to wholesalers and retailers. The government had fixed the revenue target, anticipating an increase in production, particularly of IMFL, which did not materialise. Production in Nagpur remains significantly lower compared to other centres in the state. The department is now awaiting the final government resolution (GR) on the excise duty hike, after which the revised rates will apply to fresh batches of production.
