Who is Anita Ayoob? Bollywood actress who was loved madly by Dawood Ibrahim, she came to India from..., where is she now..., what is she doing?
Anita Ayoob was born in Karachi, Pakistan. Smart, beautiful, and confident in studies, Anita did her masters in English literature and then came to India to fulfill her dream of acting. She took acting training from Roshan Taneja Acting School in Mumbai. Anita, who started her career with modeling, got lucky when she met Hindi cinema legend Dev Anand.
Dev Anand was looking for a new actress at that time, and an advertisement of Anita impressed him. He cast Anita in his film 'Pyar Ka Tarana', this film was released in 1993. Although the film flopped at the box office initially, it slowly started making its place among the audience. After this, Anita did another film, 'Gangster' in the year 1995, which was successful as per expectations. When Dawood Ibrahim was madly in love with Anita Ayoob
But this ladder of film success could not last long. During this time, Anita's name started getting associated with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. It is said that Dawood had become a mad lover of Anita. Both were seen together many times and the discussion of their relationship spread from the corridors of the industry to the headlines of the media.
This relationship put such a shadow on Anita's career that she could never shine again in the film sky. In 1995, a film producer, Javed Siddiqui, refused to take Anita in his film. Soon after this, Javed was shot dead and the needle of suspicion turned directly towards Dawood Ibrahim's henchmen. Questions were raised on Anita too and she too was kept under suspicion by the police. Although nothing was proved against Anit, but this incident weaved such a web of controversies around Anita that it became impossible to get out of it. What was Anita Ayoob accused of?
While the rumours of Anita and Dawood's relationship were rife, a Pakistani fashion magazine made a shocking claim. It was written that many people in Bollywood suspected Anita of being a Pakistani spy. After this, the industry sidelined her. Without any official announcement, Anita Ayoob's name was included in the list of obscurities. With her career ruined and controversies constantly increasing, Anita left India and returned to Pakistan. After this, she married Indian Gujarati businessman Saumil Patel and then settled in New York, America. From this marriage, she had a son, whose name is Shezar. Where is Anita Ayoob living now?
However, later this relationship also broke. Later, Anita married a Pakistani businessman, Subak Majeed. Anita Ayoob, who was once called the new sensation of Bollywood, is far away from the limelight today. No interview, no statement, no social media presence, she is living a completely normal life. Her visits to India have completely stopped. A rumour, a relationship, and a phase left the story of her career incomplete and the career of Anita, who was counted among the most beautiful beauties of Bollywood, was ruined in a jiffy.

Revisiting Girish Karnad's Wedding album
At the age of 35, playwright, filmmaker and actor, Girish Karnad, found significant success in the world of arts, with his films winning awards and accolades. His journey and life have been documented by the late actor-director himself in his memoir, This Life at Play (originally written by him in Kannada, and later translated into English by him and Srinath Perur). It is in this memoir that Girish shares the story of his birth. His mother had exclaimed to his father during lunch one day: 'And we had thought of not having him.' When Girish demanded to know more, he was told how she had felt that the three children they had would suffice, so they had booked an appointment with a doctor in Pune, but returned home when the doctor didn't show up and the couple never went back either. Reeling from this unexpected story, Girish dedicates his memoir to Dr. Madhumalathi Gune, whom he held responsible for his (and the memoir's) existence. The core of the play In his play, Wedding Album, written many decades later, Girish Karnad touches upon topics such as family secrets, nursing grievances, withholding or suddenly revealing life-altering information. The idiosyncrasies and hidden lives of families; their funny dances, sidestepping their histories; upholding of societal dividers such as caste and religion; their overlooking of serious issues like abuse; their perpetuation of dysfunctional patterns and lack of self-reflection — all forming the core of the play, which was recently performed by the Courtyard Koota community theatre group at Bangalore International Centre (BIC). The story revolves around Vidula, the youngest daughter of the family, who is to get married. The plan is to get her and the groom to meet and spend all of a week 'getting to know each other.' This is to run in parallel with wedding arrangements like purchase of jewellery and saris, planning of guest lists and gifts. A hefty advance has already been made towards the wedding venue. The possible marriage of Vidula and Ashwin, a classic NRI catch, becomes, not just a lens to view other marriages but also a platform to plot and pitch other marriages. Girish's Wedding Album exposes the national obsession of families with the institution of marriage. A mother's untold story In his autobiography, Girish writes empathetically of his mother's struggles to gain an education despite an early marriage, motherhood and widowhood. Raising a child at her parents' place, she doggedly pursued any avenue towards studying and earning a livelihood, much against the social norms of her time. She didn't just succeed in that pursuit, but dared to design her own second marriage, giving herself another chance at family life. Her new life brought her joy, wealth, more children, more accomplishments (theirs) to celebrate. Yet, Girish writes, she never 'stopped ruing that as herself, rather than as my father's wife or as our mother, she had nothing she could claim as her own achievement.' This is another thread he draws into the central narrative of Wedding Album in which Vidula, Hema and Rohit's mother, wife of Dr. Nadkarni, though not unhappy, lives with an undercurrent of sadness, even cautioning her younger daughter not to throw away her talents in bearing children. Girish writes in his memoir that Wedding Album draws from memories of the 'year of anguish and frustration' that he, his elder sister and mother went through, as they prepared for his younger sister's marriage. Natasha Iype, founder of Courtyard Koota, says this play was chosen by the community theatre group 'for its relatable theme and excellent script.' Though 'marriage felt a bit dated,' group readings showed how 'the issues raised in the play are still relevant.' They liked how 'the seemingly light-hearted approach concealed many nuances, almost in every scene and sentence.' She observes that the play 'sparked conversations and audience hung out even after the show, remarking how sad but true' the world of the play was. Though written and published in 2009, originally in Kannada as Maduveya Album, the Wedding Album continues to find resonance among theatre-makers and audience even today.

Great Indian Kapil Show pushed out of Netflix's global top 10 amid declining ratings; previous seasons suffered similar fate
Kapil Sharma's comedy show The Great Indian Kapil Show debuted on Netflix amid much hype in 2024. After years of generating strong ratings on Colors and then Sony, Kapil Sharma moved with his team on the streaming service and Netflix presented it as a move in the right direction suggesting that this will broaden their audience spectrum in India. The shopw remains one of Netflix's most watched in India but after three seasons, the ratings have shown a decline. This season, the show has already had five episodes so far. While the first three episodes of the season made it to 'Global Top 10 Non-English Shows', the last two episodes have not made it to the list. The latest episode of Kapil's show featured the team of Son of Sardaar 2, which included Ajay Devgn, Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, Sanjay Mishra among others. The one before that, featuring Jaideep Ahlawat, Pratik Gandhi, Vijay Varma and Jitendra Kumar, also did not make it to the list. The opening episode of the third season, featuring Salman Khan, got 1.6 million views and had 1.9 million hours viewed. It needs to be mentioned here that the number of views does not mean that these are the number of viewers. As per Netflix, the views are calculated by 'total hours viewed divided by runtime.' The second episode, featuring the cast of Metro In Dino, got 2 million views but these views did not solely belong to the second episode. These were the cumulative number of views for the first two episodes during the show's second week. The independent number of views for this episode were not declared by Netflix. After the third episode, featuring cricketers Gautam Gambhir, Yuzvendra Chahal, Netflix claimed that the cumulative views for the three episodes was at 1.2 million views. The number of episodes kept increasing but the views kept decreasing. And now, the show is not among Netflix's global top 10. As per the latest data shared by Netflix, the last spot on the list is occupied by the show Better Late Than Single, which has garnered 1.4 million views in two weeks. After the first four episodes, the show's views declined significantly and it got pushed out of the 'Top 10' list. The fourth episode featured Kareena Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor. The cumulative views of the first four episodes, during its fourth week, stood at 900k with 4.2 million hours viewed. The first three episodes in this season featured Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, Jr NTR, Rohit Sharma among others. Even during the show's first season, a similar thing happened as the show got pushed out of the 'Top 10' list after its fourth episode featuring Vicky Kaushal and Sunny Kaushal. In its fourth week, the show's four episodes had cumulative viewership of 1.2 million views with 3.9 million hours viewed. Hindi speakers' society of West Bengal to celebrate 100 years of Premchand's masterpiece Rangbhoomi in Kolkata
While it is common to celebrate the centenary of a personality or an event, it is not often that 100 years of the publication of a book is remembered through an event, something that a group of Hindi-speaking people in West Bengal is doing for Premchand's masterpiece Rangbhoomi. At a time when it has become almost routine for language fanatics to make news, the Paschim Banga Hindi Bhashi Samaj (West Bengal Hindi Speakers' Society) is holding a seminar on July 31, 2025 to revisit the Hindi novel that was published a century ago. The event will be held at Premchand Library in north Kolkata. Editorial | Premchand, who? 'The milestone is a memorable moment in Hindi literature, more so because the story is more relevant than ever. It is the story of a poor man being displaced from his land, something that is the reality of today's India. The problems depicted by Premchand in his literature have all acquired monstrous forms,' Ashok Singh, general secretary of the Society and former head of Hindi department at Surendranath Evening College, told The Hindu. 'In the words of critic Ram Vilas Sharma, Rangbhoomi represents the period that saw the beginning of the farmers' movement against landowners in the Hindi belt in the 1920s. They were fighting a lone battle without the help of any political party or leader. They lost because at the time farmers and labourers didn't have a union; that's what the protagonist, a blind beggar called Surdas, advises them while dying — he asked them to unite,' Mr. Singh said. Also Read | Premchand, trashed? 'Imagine, this was the 1920s, as if Premchand was looking at the future. He makes Surdas say, 'We may have lost, but we have not deserted the game, let us catch our breath and we will come back, we will learn from you with each defeat and will eventually defeat you someday.' Today, on one hand, the government is working in the interest of the corporates by displacing farmers from their lands, but on the other, an organised peasant movement has forced the government to withdraw three anti-farmer laws,' Mr. Singh said. According to him, ever since the Paschim Banga Hindi Bhashi Samaj was set up, in 1999, its objective has been to hold literary and cultural events, and among the icons it has celebrated so far include Rahi Masoom Raza, Mrinal Sen and Ritwik Ghatak. Awakening the aesthete within the reader 'The main objective of the language communalism you see in the country these days is to distract people from burning problems such as unemployment, inflation, poor education and privatisation of the health sector. In West Bengal, this sort of communalism was initiated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the 2019 elections when she said that the Hindi-speaking people in the State, who formed 15% of the population, were its guests,' Mr. Singh said.
