Filmmaker Nidhi Dutta on miscarriage, IVF, and filming Border 2 during pregnancy

India Today28-05-2025
Filmmaker Nidhi Dutta recently shared her IVF journey on social media. In a society where conversations around infertility and assisted conception are still considered taboo, Dutta hopes to help change perceptions. Speaking exclusively to India Today, Dutta shared that her decision to speak about her pregnancy was aimed at normalising the process and offering hope to women facing similar challenges.Interestingly, her pregnancy journey started as they geared up for Border 2, and it culminated as filming wrapped. 'The timeline is surprising. I think the baby will have no choice but to be absolutely filmy,' she laughed.advertisementOpening up about her decision to talk about IVF through social media, Nidhi Dutta said that it has been a long four-year journey for her. 'When the term TTC came, I was clueless, as were many other women. It means 'trying to conceive', and every parent battling infertility, waiting for adoption or surrogacy to come through, comes under the umbrella. I never planned or jumped into sharing my experience; it all came naturally to me. It was just a way of conversation where I would mention my procedure in passing. However, when I started talking about it, I realised there are so many women around me who have been through the same. And I was shocked — why didn't you ever mention it, even as a friend? I understand it's a personal preference, but just normalising it will bring so much hope to others,' she said.

Dutta acknowledged that while she had an amazing partner and family to support her throughout, a woman has to go through tough times alone. "Your hormones are all over the place, you have to take the injections; what you are feeling cannot be put into words. There are so many women, especially in smaller towns, going through it. I know of women who weren't allowed to talk about it as their in-laws felt it would bring shame to the family. Mentally, we need that support, and I realised that with the number of messages that I got after my post. Seeing even one person in the same boat gives you so much hope. I see so many celebrities talk about IVF after their delivery, giving a laydown of the technicalities. But the doctor can tell you that — what women need is to know how to find the strength, and that needs to be shared,' she added.
Dutta also spoke about working on set while pregnant and surprising the cast and crew when she finally shared the news. She recalled actor Varun Dhawan being present that day, along with the film's director. She said he and the director were not ready to believe that she was expecting, given how active she had been.advertisement'We were shooting in an army base, and I was in full action mode, while my husband's heart was in his mouth. I think as women, we understand our bodies. You do have to be cautious with your diet, but every pregnancy is different. I was constantly in touch with my doctors and flying to Mumbai for my regular scans. The crew also started getting me homemade food, I had a dedicated bathroom van. Through this journey, I also realised that women in India are giving birth in fields. They are such powerful forces. I think we know we have to work, and that gives us strength. I mean, I had to make a film that the whole world has been waiting for,' she smiled, as she spoke about the challenges of working while carrying her child. The filmmaker also touched on the sensitive topic of the desire to have a child, saying that this too should be part of open discussions. 'I got married in March 2021 and conceived naturally in May. I soon miscarried, and more than physically, it left a very bad mental trauma. The 6–7 weeks were so exciting for us as a couple that it made us realise that we wanted to have a baby. Then the journey began — naturally, IUI and IVF. But I know the feeling, the yearning, and the pain I went through in the last four years. Just seeing someone announce their pregnancy on social media would leave me distressed. I think for every woman dealing with infertility, what sets them apart is their strength never to give up. Even in my lowest low, I stood up and went to work. And I want to pass that hope and will to others now,' Dutta said.advertisementOn a final note, we asked her about what kind of world she is hoping to give her baby. 'Honestly, I keep telling my mother that since it was so difficult to reach this point, my focus was on this, and I haven't thought beyond. I will take each step as it comes. But like every parent, you want to hope for the best. With no wars, Covid has also decided to come back, so not that too,' the producer said with a smile.Nidhi Dutta's Border 2 is slated for release on January 23, 2026. You May Also Like

Vaibhavi Merchant wins National Award, says Dhindora Baje Re was always special

Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant was on her way to work in London when a journalist informed her about her winning the National Award. Her song 'Dhindora Baje Re' from 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' won the Best Choreography award at the 71st National Awards an exclusive conversation with India Today, she said, "It all feels so surreal right now. Because I am not in the country, I didn't know it was happening today. It's an emotional moment, but it has yet to sink in. I am soon going to be 50, and I think it's come as a wonderful birthday surprise."advertisementThis is her second honour after 'Dholi Taro' from 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', but the excitement remains the same. Merchant shared what the award means to her. She said, "It's infused a lot of life back into my work. I'll be honest, as an artist, I still look at every new project as my first one. I still get those goosebumps and the nervous energy. I still choreograph all my pieces with butterflies in my stomach."She added, "For me, entering that rehearsal hall is sacrosanct; it's my temple, the world I was born into. It's also the world that brought me up. Dance is something I have known ever since I was a child. Also, because I've been trained in Bharatnatyam, any piece that celebrates semi-classical or Indian forms, and is encouraged in the Hindi film industry, becomes special for me." The choreographer added that people are often surprised by how she can pull off a classical and a contemporary song like 'Besharam Rang' in the same year. She shared that she "now feels there's an instinctive switch in her brain, which helps her take on different genres at the same time."Merchant discussed in detail the song that brought this honour. She mentioned that 'Dhindora Baje Re' was an extremely important part in the narrative, and kind of lifts the film."It almost felt like a pre-climactic scene, a sequence. For me, it was very clear that I wanted this to become the biggest number in the film. It comes at a very crucial point. Tota Roy Choudhury and Ranveer Singh also have a dance sequence from 'Dola Re Dola' just before that. I remember it was another high to get them to do Kathak, and because I am a huge Saroj Khan ji fan, it was rather very fulfilling," she 49-year-old also spoke about her experience of working with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. She said, "I also got to work with both my proteges, since I worked with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer in their first films. So for me to get both these artists to come and do the song was truly remarkable and special. It was my gift, my love for Karan. It's so much fun shooting with him, I would leave everything to be on Karan Johar's set any day."The choreographer added that every member of the film was a delight to work with. And while people keep talking about how the song was 'iconic', broke 'gender roles', Merchant shared that she doesn't work with such preconceived this happens later. It reaches legacy status much later when another generation that's waiting recognises it. Like I would watch a Saroj Khan or people prior to that generation and learn from them. So hopefully, we will also see those days someday," she added with a with the Best Choreography award, 'Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani' also bagged the award for Best Popular film for wholesome entertainment.- Ends

Earlier, Rai condemned the edited version of his film, calling it the death of creativity, and mentioned that this was not his film. He also said nobody from the film's creative team agreed to providing a happy ending and using AI to do a social media post, he wrote, "I had no involvement in it. Nor did the team that originally made the film. Regardless of what it claims to be, this is not the film we set out to create. 'Raanjhanaa' was never just a film to us, it was a work crafted by human hands, shaped by human flaws and genuine emotion. What is currently being circulated is not a tribute, but a reckless hijacking that robs the piece of its intent, its context and its soul (sic)."Meanwhile, while speaking to India Today, the producers of the film said it was a deeply thoughtful move to offer joy to the audience, and experiment with new technologies to comply with the standards of world cinema. In a long statement, Eros International said, "The re-release of 'Raanjhanaa' in the Tamil market is part of Eros International's broader strategy to refresh and reintroduce classic cinematic works to newer audiences in regional markets. Over a decade since its original release, the film continues to resonate deeply, and the reinterpretation of its ending aims to extend its emotional legacy and relevance. This is a creative reimagining, not a replacement, and is consistent with global industry practices, including anniversary editions, alternate cuts, and modernised remasters (sic)."'Raanjhanaa', a love story also starring Abhay Deol, was originally released in theatres on June 21, 2013.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Sonam Kapoor

Son of Sardaar 2 vs Dhadak 2 box office Day 1: Ajay Devgn's film earns twice

Both 'Son of Sardaar 2' and 'Dhadak 2' received mixed reviews from the critics and audience on their opening day at the box office. While the Ajay Devgn film emerged as the family entertainer, Siddhanth Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri's film caught on to the trend as a socially relevant love story. And for many reasons, 'Son of Sardaar 2' won the opening day battle by earning twice as by Vijay Kumar Arora, 'Son of Sardaar 2' opened at Rs 6.65 crore nett, while 'Dhadak 2' collected around Rs 3.35 crore on Day 1, reported the trade website Sacnilk. Both films were challenged by the roaring 'Saiyaara' craze in YRF film entered its third weekend at the ticket window and ended up surpassing the opening day business of 'Dhadak 2'. The love story, starring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, earned around Rs 4.25 crore on Day 15, taking its total collection to around Rs 284.75 crore. The film is expected to enter the Rs 300 crore club by the end of the weekend. Meanwhile, India Today gave a 2.5-star rating to 'Son of Sardaar 2' in its review, calling the film awkward and exaggerated. A part of the review reads, "Ajay Devgn returns as Jassi, a Sardaar lost in Scotland and even more lost in the plot. With forced humour, awkward chemistry, and India-Pakistan punchlines doing the heavy lifting, 'Son of Sardaar 2' struggles to match the charm or chaos of the first film."It will be interesting to see how the new releases cope with the 'Saiyaara' storm.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Ajay Devgn#Siddhant Chaturvedi#Mrunal Thakur
