DRB-HICOM acquires remaining 30% stake in SEMSB for RM20mil

The Star31-07-2025
PETALING JAYA: DRB-Hicom Bhd is acquiring the remaining 30% stake in Scott & English (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (SEMSB) from Arah Kiara Sdn Bhd for RM20mil.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, DRB-Hicom said the acquisition was done via its wholly-owned subsidiary, HICOM Holdings Bhd (HHB), making SEMSB a wholly-owned subsidiary of HHB.
DRB-HICOM said SEMSB owns two properties located in strategic areas, namely Glenmarie, Shah Alam and Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Kuala Lumpur.
'These properties currently generate stable rental income and offer long-term redevelopment prospects/potential.
'The acquisition would allow DRB-HICOM Group to secure full ownership of SEMSB and allow the group to optimise and unlock value from these strategic properties.'
According to DRB-HICOM, SEMSB was principally engaged in the importation, distribution, and servicing of industrial, marine, and engineering products, as well as investment holding.
'SEMSB ceased its core operations since March 31, 2015 and is currently involved in the rental of properties located in Glenmarie Shah Alam.'

Tabung Haji denies RM20mil rebranding allegation

KUALA LUMPUR: Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has denied that it spent RM20mil on rebranding, calling it a false and defamatory allegation. In a statement, TH clarified that the actual cost for the brand rejuvenation process was RM2mil per year over a three-year period. 'Efforts to strengthen the brand have been undertaken multiple times as a vital investment aimed at changing mindsets and encouraging Muslims to save systematically in order to fulfil the requirements for performing the haj,' it said. TH said the rebranding process also involved market surveys and engagement with depositors to better understand their needs while taking into account demographic shifts within the Muslim community in Malaysia. 'The claim that TH need not strengthen its well-known brand after 60 years of operation is also inaccurate,' said the statement. As of now, TH has 9.6 million depositors, which accounts for about half of the Muslim population in the country. According to TH, over 53% of depositors hold savings of less than RM1,300, which is significantly below the estimated RM15,000 needed for a pilgrim from the B40 group to undertake the haj in 2025. 'Over 80% of the depositors' financial transactions are carried out online. Therefore, TH plans to launch a campaign to encourage Muslims to save early, consistently and systematically to build sufficient savings, while ensuring stable investments for the institution's sustainability,' the statement said, Bernama reported. TH stated that its board of directors had chosen to reassess the agency's strategy in order to maintain competitiveness, enhance service quality, and appeal to a younger demographic of Muslims as potential depositors.

Tabung Haji denies RM20mil rebranding claim, clarifies actual cost

LEMBAGA Tabung Haji (TH) has denied allegations that it spent RM20mil on a rebranding exercise, calling the claim 'untrue and slanderous'. In a statement, TH said the actual budget allocation for the brand rejuvenation process is RM2mil per year over three years, not RM20mil. 'The speculation of RM20mil expenditure for the new rebranding process is untrue and constitutes slander,' it stressed. The pilgrimage fund explained that efforts to refresh its brand are necessary despite its 60-year history. 'The allegation that TH does not need to make efforts to strengthen its brand, which is already well known, is inaccurate,' it said, adding that brand rejuvenation has been undertaken several times in the past. TH said the exercise involves market surveys and engagement with depositors, noting that demographic changes among Malaysian Muslims have had a 'very significant impact'. Currently, TH has 9.6 million depositors, equivalent to only half of the country's Muslim population. 'More than 53% of our depositors have savings of less than RM1,300, which is far from sufficient for preparing to perform the hajj,' it said. The board of directors has also decided to review strategies to remain competitive and attract younger depositors. The TH media statement is probably related to the speech by the PAS MP for Pengkalan Chepa, Datuk Dr Ahmad Marzuk Shaary who alleged that TH is proceeding with a rebranding at the cost of RM20mil. In his speech during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan, the MP questioned the need for such large expenditure when TH already has a strong and internationally recognised brand. He highlighted that the funds come from Muslim depositors, including villagers, FELDA settlers, fishermen, and youths saving for hajj, and argued that the money would be better used to improve services or subsidise B40 pilgrims. He raised concerns that the appointed firms (5Grams Communications, Green Zebra, Sentry PR) are not fully Muslim- or bumiputra-owned, with some even led by non-Muslims, which he said disregards the sensitivities and aspirations of TH depositors. He stressed that TH is not just a financial institution but a symbol of Muslim dignity and a trust that safeguards the dreams of Muslims to perform hajj. He demanded the government explain who approved the appointments, what procurement process was followed, and what justification exists for the expenditure. Finally, he called for assurances that depositors' funds will continue to be managed with integrity and trust. — Aug 16, 2025

Mangrove restoration collab takes root along Tg Karang coast

Happy volunteers taking part in restoring mangroves on the Kuala Selangor coast. A total of 450 mangrove saplings have been planted at Banjar North Forest Reserve in Tanjong Karang as part of a joint conservation effort on the Kuala Selangor coast. The Mangrove Forest Conservation Project, aimed at restoring and protecting mangrove ecosystems, is a collaboration between DRB-Hicom and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM). The event saw volunteers from DRB-Hicom's Sahabat programme and UiTM students pitching in to plant Rhizophora mucronata (bakau kurap) during the launch of the project. According to a media statement from DRB-Hicom, the project will ultimately see 1,000 saplings planted, with continuous monitoring to support the rehabilitation of the coastal area impacted by erosion. Speaking at the launch, DRB-Hicom chief communication officer Cairil Irwan Amir said the Mangrove Forest Conservation Project reflected the company's emphasis on sustainability, which included active engagement with academic institutions and local communities. 'This programme is a long-term investment in our environment and our people. The 'bakau kurap' planting is part of the collaboration between DRB-Hicom and UiTM. 'By working hand-in-hand with UiTM, we hope to not only have a positive impact on the environment, but also contribute towards better education and wider community development,' said Cairil. The Mangrove Forest Conservation Project is a three-year collaboration with UiTM's Built Environment Faculty, which includes ongoing monitoring of the mangrove forest in the area, soil-carbon stock analysis, and educational workshops with the local community. 'This project gives our employees first-hand knowledge and experience to understand the real impacts of environment degradation. 'Our partnership with UiTM and links through various operating companies create a wide foundation towards engaging and supporting the local community, while contributing meaningfully to the national sustainability agenda,' Cairil added. The project will also be supported by a host of DRB-Hicom subsidiaries such as Bank Muamalat, Proton, EON and DRB-Hicom University of Automotive Malaysia. Also present at the launch were representatives from DRB-Hicom, UiTM Built Environment Faculty and Selangor Forestry Department.
