Indonesia's franchise market offers growth for Malaysian brands

JAKARTA: Indonesia's rapidly expanding franchise industry presents significant growth opportunities for Malaysian businesses seeking to strengthen their regional footprint, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Indonesia, with a population exceeding 270 million and a growing middle class, is now recognised as one of the most dynamic and strategic markets for franchising in Southeast Asia.
'Franchising is a proven model for entrepreneurship and job creation,' he said in a statement on Monday after attending a networking luncheon with key Indonesian franchise industry players as part of his three-day official visit.
'I believe Malaysia and Indonesia can continue to drive inclusive economic growth through deeper franchise collaboration, while building a more resilient and competitive regional economy,' Ahmad Zahid said.
He also highlighted that the food and beverage sector continues to lead franchise growth in Indonesia, with Malaysian brands such as OldTown White Coffee gaining a solid foothold alongside regional giants like KFC and Chatime.
In the education and training sector, Ahmad Zahid said Malaysian names such as Smart Reader Kids and Global Art have made meaningful contributions, reflecting the shared emphasis both nations place on lifelong learning.
Beyond that, he said Malaysian brands have also made successful inroads in retail, fashion, and health and beauty, riding on the wave of rising consumer demand in urban centres across Indonesia.
'Brands such as Bonia are now familiar names in Indonesian malls, while our wellness and lifestyle offerings align well with emerging trends among youth and women,' said Ahmad Zahid.
He also praised the ongoing collaboration between the Malaysian Franchise Association (MFA), Indonesia's Asosiasi Franchise Indonesia (AFI), and Perhimpunan Waralaba dan Lisensi Indonesia (WALI).
These partnerships, he said, have led to impactful joint initiatives such as the adaptation of Malaysia's Franchise Act for the Indonesian context, joint participation in international exhibitions, and the organisation of educational webinars and workshops.
Ahmad Zahid stressed that the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), working alongside MFA, continues to play a key role in driving Malaysian franchise expansion through strategic business matchmaking and exhibition support.
'These efforts not only create new pathways for Malaysian businesses abroad, but also strengthen Malaysia-Indonesia people-to-people and commercial ties,' he said.

Lim, who had overseen the reintroduction of the sales and service tax in 2018, also called on the federal government to postpone the rollout of the revised SST. On Monday, the finance ministry said that a 5% to 10% rate will be imposed on non-essential goods from July 1. The service tax, on the other hand, will be expanded to include rent, lease, construction, financial services, private healthcare, and education. Lim also questioned the decision to impose a 5% tax on imported fruits, like apples and oranges. 'We understand that the government is doing this to encourage the consumption of local fruits, but certain imported fruits like apples and oranges should not be taxed,' he said. Since the announcement, several associations have raised concerns about the potential impact on service accessibility, pricing transparency, and operational preparedness, especially for sectors like healthcare and education which serve many non-Malaysians including foreign workers, expatriates, and international students.

Malaysia's labour market continued to show steady improvement in April 2025, with employment rising and unemployment falling to its lowest level in ten years, according to the latest data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). The number of employed persons rose by 0.2% month-on-month, adding 40,100 jobs to bring the total to 16.82 million. The employment-to-population ratio remained stable at 68.6%, reflecting sustained economic capacity to generate jobs. According to the DOSM report, services led the increase, particularly in wholesale and retail trade, accommodation and food services, and transportation and storage. Manufacturing, Construction, Agriculture, and Mining & Quarrying also posted job gains. The employee category, which makes up the bulk of the workforce at 75.1%, rose to 12.63 million, while the number of own-account workers—typically self-employed individuals—increased by 0.6% to 3.16 million. Malaysia's unemployment rate dropped to 3.0% in April, the lowest since April 2015, marking a 0.1 percentage point decrease from March. The number of unemployed persons declined by 3,700 to 525,900, further cementing a positive trend in the job market. The total labour force expanded by 36,400 persons to 17.34 million, pushing the labour force participation rate (LFPR) up to 70.8%, a 0.1 percentage point increase from the previous month. Meanwhile, the number of individuals outside the labour force rose slightly by 11,300 to 7.17 million. The main reasons cited were housework or family responsibilities (43.7%) and schooling or training (41.1% April's labour data highlights growing confidence in the Malaysian economy, with strong job creation across multiple sectors and a record-low jobless rate. Asean TVET Council must chart a clear path forward, says Zahid

MELAKA: The Asean TVET Council 4th Regional Policy Dialogue (ATC 4th RPD) must chart a clear way forward for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi ( pic ). He said the dialogue is about building an Asean-wide ecosystem, one that places TVET at the centre of the region's future, with the Asean TVET Council as the nerve centre that connects policies, aligns standards, and drives shared growth. "First, we must expand TVET access to rural communities, especially youth, because the future cannot be built on urban skills alone. "In Malaysia, GiatMara, a long-standing TVET institution under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) and my ministry, has shown what's possible. It has equipped rural youth with skills, and over 50 graduates have become millionaires in various technical fields," he said in his keynote address at the ATC 4th RPD, themed "TVET for Rural and Regional Advancement" here on Wednesday (June 11). Also present were Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Melaka State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad, Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang and representatives from Asean, Germany and Australia. He emphasised that Asean must work to bridge the skills gap by promoting industry-driven, demand-based training programmes. According to him, the region needs a talent pipeline shaped by the needs of factories, plantations, and emerging green industries across Asean, and to achieve this, it requires industries to co-develop training, share apprenticeships, and open cross-border job opportunities. "Thirdly, we must build TVET as a full ecosystem, aligning education, industry, infrastructure, certification and digital access, all guided by data and coordinated by ATC," he said. Ahmad Zahid said that as Asean Chair this year, Malaysia is ready to coordinate and lead. "We propose the formalisation of Malaysia as the Asean TVET Certification and Excellence Hub, and we look forward to the full support of all member states in making this a shared regional legacy," he said. He said TVET is no longer on the sidelines, as it now stands at the very centre of national economic strategies, and in this global race for relevance, skills are the new currency. "Malaysia is not only championing skills development, but also laying the groundwork for Asean to become a TVET powerhouse. "Let us work together to ensure TVET remains accessible, relevant and future-proof for all. Let us commit to building an Asean where no talent is left untapped and no community is left behind. "With the right mix of training, mentorship and market access, TVET becomes a powerful tool for poverty eradication and generational change," he said. – Bernama
