Glasgow pupils 'so proud' after school's 'wonderful' inspection report

Momen said: 'We did really well and we are proud of our school.' Ben added: 'I'm glad we did so well.'
Anna said: 'It's not too surprising because for the last seven years it's always been very good.'

The Education Scotland team praised the school's 'highly effective leadership of change at all levels' and added: 'Senior leaders, teachers and support staff use their professional knowledge and skills very well to ensure positive outcomes for all children and drive forward improvements.
'Children articulate well the positive difference they are making in their school and beyond.'
Scotstoun Primary has featured in the Glasgow Times because of its brilliant community initiatives. Its Café Culture project, which brings parents from different cultures and backgrounds together to cook, share recipes and chat, won the Best School Award at our Community Champion Awards in 2023.

The inspectors said the school benefitted from 'very well-established and high-quality community and partnership working' and added: 'Everyone recognises and honours the cultural diversity within the school and local community which ensures a strong sense of belonging.'
The report also praised 'teachers' highly-effective use of digital technologies which are fully integrated within teaching, learning and assessment', and it continued: 'Staff also plan and provide high-quality play, STEM and inquiry-based experiences. This is enhancing children's learning and skills.'

Other key strengths highlighted by the inspectors included 'well-designed, nurturing approaches and events" which "help children to feel safe, secure and confident', and 'very successful approaches to raise children's attainment and accelerate their progress, including closing any gaps in learning.'
As an area for improvement, the inspectors said the school should 'continue to develop and deliver high-quality, enriching learning experiences for children across a range of contexts, including outdoors.'
Headteacher Emma McGill said: 'We are delighted and proud that the hard work and support of our staff team, children, families and wider community has been recognised through our very good inspection report.
'Our staff are dedicated to ensuring all children are supported and made to feel part of our school family and we are so pleased that this was recognised.'
She added: 'Our partnership working with our families and wider community is a key factor in our success and we really appreciate their ongoing support.'
Councillor Christina Cannon, Glasgow City Council's education convener said: 'What a wonderful report card for the school community.
'Inspectors illustrate many highlights throughout the publication… and the cultural diversity of the school community gets a special mention, a couple of years after the school's successful launch of their Café Culture recipe book which saw a host of different dishes chosen from the many cultures that make up Scotstoun Primary school.
'Congratulations to all.'

No action taken over Glasgow City Halls roof fans despite promise
The Glasgow Times previously reported, however, more than two years later there has still been no planning application for the air coolers which are connected to the building's air conditioning system and are understood to be taller than the previous fans. A spokesperson for Glasgow Life, which rents the building from City Property, says the fans are a 'like-for-like' replacement to the previous coolers but that they, along with Glasgow City Council, are looking into 'potential remedial works' to mitigate the noise of the fans. A council spokesperson also confirmed it is the case 'that a Planning Authority cannot take enforcement action against itself'. City Property, who has owned the building since 2019, is the council-owned property firm. Mr Hayman submitted a complaint to the council about the fans in February of this year. He received an Interim Planning Impact Report dated April 24 which listed planning history as two applications from 2021 which do not reference the new fans and then gave an assessment that 'new ownership issues were required' and he would receive a response in the next seven days. At the time of writing more than 40 days later, he has still not received a further response, but a City Property spokesperson confirmed to the Glasgow Times it still owns the building but says as Glasgow Life manages and operates it, they cannot comment on the fans. (Image: Archive) Mr Hayman said: 'The Interim Planning Impact Report that said they were trying to find out who owns the building just seems to be a way of wasting time. 'I've had no response since then.' Dr Eileen Mills, who also lives in Merchant City, highlights an email sent by a council official to the Scottish Government in September 2023 stated: "I can confirm that we, as the relevant Planning Authority, in liaison with colleagues in Glasgow Life, will be ensuring that the necessary consents are in place." She said: 'I feel if a commitment has been made that the local planning authority would be ensuring the necessary consents were in place, then that should be honoured. 'Just to say they can't enforce their own ALEOs [Arm's Length External Organisation], does that mean the council can do anything without limit?' A Glasgow Life spokesperson said: 'In collaboration with colleagues at Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life is continuing to assess the issues associated with the like-for-like replacement cooler unit at the City Halls in order to identify any potential remedial works that may be required to mitigate the noise of the roof fans.' A council spokesperson added: 'Discussions between the council's planning team are continuing to discuss how they can best mitigate the noise of the roof fans, and the action required to achieve that.'

Third teen arrested following tragic death of Kayden Moy
Police Scotland confirmed that a 14-year-old boy has now been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation. The Glasgow Times have previously reported that two 17-year-old males had been arrested, charged, and appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court. In a statement, Police Scotland Ayrshire said: 'A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the death of Kayden Moy in Irvine. "This is the third arrest made in relation to Kayden's murder. "A 17-year-old male was previously arrested and charged in connection with the murder and appeared on petition at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Tuesday, May 20. "Another 17-year-old male was also arrested and charged and appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Friday, May 23.' Officers were called to Irvine Beach around 6.45pm on Saturday, May 17, after reports that a 16-year-old boy had been seriously injured. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and Kayden, from East Kilbride, was taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock, where he died a short time later. His death has sent shockwaves through the community, sparking grief, tributes, and a widespread call for justice. We reported that tributes have poured in from family, friends, school staff, and local residents. Annette Alexander, headteacher at Duncanrig Secondary School, described Kayden as 'a kind and caring young man' who was 'full of character.' She said he left a lasting impact on the school community and would be 'greatly missed.' South Lanarkshire Council also expressed its condolences and confirmed that support would be provided to pupils affected by the tragedy, adding: 'This has been a tragic event and our profound sympathies go out to Kayden's loved ones.' Madeleine McCann search in Portugal enters second day
Madeleine disappeared in 2007 while on holiday with her family in the resort of Praia da Luz after her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, who is from Glasgow, went out to dinner and left her sleeping in a room with her toddler twin siblings.
