Alcaraz secures 50th win of 2025 at Cincinnati Open

BBC News2 days ago
Carlos Alcaraz says for half the matches of the tennis season, players "don't feel that good" as the Spaniard secured a tour-leading 50th victory of 2025 at the Cincinnati Open. The 22-year-old cruised past Serbian Hamad Medjedovic in straight sets 6-4 6-4 in the third round to also claim his 13th consecutive Masters 1000 win. Alcaraz is the first player since 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic, from 2013 to 2016, to reach 50 wins in four consecutive seasons. The world number two will face Italian Luca Nardi in the fourth round on Wednesday. "You have to think positive and just play your best tennis possible that day," said the five-time Grand Slam winner. "I'm really happy that in really difficult matches I'm able to play my best tennis even though I'm not feeling the right way."I'm just happy and proud about it because it's something I'm working on."Lucky loser Nardi, 22, led 16th seed Jakub Mensik 6-2 2-1 when the Czech retired from their third-round match.
The first set between Medjedovic and Alcaraz was tight in the sweltering Ohio conditions but the Spaniard got the break for 4-3 before sealing the opener. Medjedovic then received treatment from the physio for neck pain. Medjedovic, who is also 22, had a chance in the second set to take the lead at 3-3, but his attempt at two drop shots both hit the net. Alcaraz edged ahead to take a 4-3 advantage once again, and he wrapped up victory soon after. Alcaraz has won seven ATP Masters 1000 trophies in his career, including the Monte Carlo and Rome titles this year. He also successfully defended his French Open title by beating world number one Jannik Sinner in an extraordinary final at Roland Garros in June, before Italian Sinner defeated him in the Wimbledon final a month later. Following the tournament in Cincinnati, Alcaraz heads to New York for the last Grand Slam of the campaign, the US Open, which begins on 24 August.
Players have been struggling with the heat during this week's tournament, with temperatures regularly exceeding 30C.Francisco Comesana and Reilly Opelka both took medical timeouts during their third-round match, which was also interrupted for 45 minutes by rain. Argentine Comesana won 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 7-5, saving three match points, but he needed medical attention in the second set, with a ball girl rushing to hand the 24-year-old a sick bag as he made his way gingerly back to his seat. American Opelka, 27, also called for the doctor in the final set, complaining of dizziness and high blood pressure after being broken for 5-6.

Defending champion Sinner storms into Cincinnati semi-finals

Aug 14 (Reuters) - Defending champion Jannik Sinner swept past Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-0 6-2 on Thursday to reach the Cincinnati Open semi-finals, with the world number one extending his hardcourt winning streak to 25 matches. Sinner delivered a dominant performance, capitalising on his opponent's 29 unforced errors to claim his first win in three meetings against the Canadian in just 71 minutes. "Today I felt great on court. I think you saw that but every day is going to be different," Sinner said. "Tomorrow is a day off, which is good for me. We will try and put some reps in and then see what I can do in the semis." The Italian became only the fifth man this century to record 25 consecutive victories on the surface alongside Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. He will face either Danish seventh seed Holger Rune or French qualifier Terence Atmane. In the women's draw, second seed Coco Gauff secured her place in the quarter-finals with a 6-2 6-4 win over Italy's Lucia Bronzetti. "For the most part I played aggressive. Maybe got a bit passive in some of those games. But it's tough. The balls are super light and they fly," Gauff said. "She wasn't giving me much pace. I was trying to play with control but also aggressive. I think I did well. I missed a couple balls. But I learned from it and was able to close it out." The two-time Grand Slam champion will next face another Italian, seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who swept past Barbora Krejcikova 6-1 6-2 in a rematch of the 2024 Wimbledon final.

Savinho's agents jet in from Brazil in bid to push through move to Tottenham from Man City - with star eager to secure regular football

Savinho's agents are bound for Europe in a bid to secure the transfer he wants from Manchester City to Tottenham. Frederico Moraes of ProManager left Brazil on Thursday with a view to further negotiations next week. Spurs are keen on Savinho who moved to City from Girona in Spain a year ago and the move appeals to the 21-year-old winger because he wants to star as a Premier League regular not a fringe player in the season with a World Cup at the end. Pep Guardiola has been seeking ways to trim the size of his squad as part of a reboot at the Etihad Stadium, but City have demanded £67million according to reports in Brazil. Tottenham are also in pursuit of Eberechi Eze, who would cost a similar figure. They are in talks with Crystal Palace and inching closer to a deal but not yet in agreement. Arsenal have shown an interest in Eze but at present, the 27-year-old England forward looks most likely end up at Spurs. Thomas Frank wants to sign both players. It is not a case of one of the other. They have different profiles and would fulfil very different roles in squad if he managed to secure them both. He is desperately short of creativity with both James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski injured long term and this was evident from open play in the Super Cup, when the twp Spurs goals came from set pieces. Frank though will be cautious having seen a move for Morgan Gibbs-White collapse in the final stages. Tottenham's performance in the Super Cup, however, might convince any potential targets they are a serious outfit going into this season. They led Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 before conceding two goals late on and losing on penalties. 'It is the beginning of a journey together,' said midfielder Joao Paulinha, who made his debut against PSG after a loan move from Bayern Munich. 'It's a new team for me. Tottenham is a great club. It has all the conditions to achieve good things. 'It showed in the past and for sure it will show again in the future. We have a top coach with a top human being. I think we have all the conditions together to achieve good things.

Jannik Sinner cruises to 25th hard-court win in a row with victory in Cincinnati

Jannik Sinner extended his winning run on hard courts to 25 matches with a ruthless dismissal of Félix Auger-Aliassime in the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals. Playing in his first tournament since lifting his fourth grand slam title at Wimbledon, the world No 1 and defending champion powered to a 6-0, 6-2 victory against the Canadian. Auger-Aliassime had won both his previous matches against Sinner but could offer little resistance on Thursday, with the Italian beginning and ending the contest with runs of six games in a row, completing victory in just 71 minutes. Sinner has not been beaten on his favourite surface since a loss to Carlos Alcaraz in Beijing in early October last year. 'For the most part I played aggressive,' said Gauff. 'Maybe there were a couple of times that were a little bit passive in some of those games but it's tough – the balls are super light and she wasn't giving me much pace. Meanwhile, the former world No 6 Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from the US Open, tournament organisers said yesterday. The Italian, ranked 59th, has not competed since a first-round loss at Wimbledon in June after he had recovered from an abdominal injury. Berrettini skipped the Swiss Open in Gstaad and the Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati in the buildup to the grand slam at Flushing Meadows, where he reached the semi-finals in 2019. The American Brandon Holt will take his place in the main draw, where singles action begins on 24 August.
