‘Farmers are going to suffer losses' under proposed CAP changes

Agriland8 hours ago
Farmers are 'going to suffer losses' under the European Commission's plans for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in the next long term EU budget, according to the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association (ICMSA).
The commission unveiled its plans for CAP as its proposals for the next Multi-annual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2028 to 2034 were detailed to the European Parliament's budget committee today (Wednesday, July 16).
According to Denis Drennan, president of the ICMSA, the Commission's CAP plans represent a speeded-up timetable for the EU's withdrawal of direct supports to farming and primary food production.
Drennan also believes that the European Commission's CAP plans have the potential to drive food prices up across the EU and drive down the 'high standard and sustainable food production within the EU.
'It's not even difficult to predict the disaster that will follow this announcement, it's just simple logic.
'As the direct supports for farmers fall, they will have to raise prices as they sell along the chain with a resulting impact at the point of sale to the consumer,' he added.
CAP
The president of the ICMSA also believes that questions have to be asked about the EU's ability 'to feed itself' if its CAP plans go ahead.
'Some people might think this is alarmist, but those very same people should take a close look at developments in EU agriculture, their view will certainly change when they do so,' Drennan added.
He said although CAP had failed to pace with inflation, the impact of potential reductions to individual payments as a result of the commission's proposals would mean 'cuts will be piled on cuts'.
'We've had many promises from the Commission on CAP on support and simplification.
'None have been kept. Today's announcement simply underlines the slide into irrelevance. The EU can no longer even pretend to be an asset to farmers, it's an obstacle, a negative, that causes more problems than it provides solutions,' Drennan said.
He is now calling on the Taoiseach to 'immediately signal Ireland's rejection' of the Commission's proposals and has urged Irish MEPS to do the same.

"I do so with humility and with hope. I do so with a deep conviction that together we can make this country better and that we can make this country live up to its name as a Republic and show there's a different way. "I'm standing to enable people, empower people to find their own voices, to stand up and be counted and say there is a different way." Ms Connolly is the second person to confirm their intention to run to replace him. Former EU Commissioner Mairead McGuinness was confirmed as Fine Gael's candidate earlier this week. The election to succeed Mr Higgins is expected to take place in late October. Prospective candidates need the nominations of 20 Oireachtas members to get on the ballot paper. Germany and Britain to sign a new 'friendship agreement'

GERMANY AND BRITAIN are due to sign a 'friendship treaty' in London today in a move to create closer ties between the UK and the EU. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will travel to London for the first time since taking his role earlier this year as Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer seeks to realign the UK-EU post-Brexit relationship. Advertisement A new treaty will refer to the turbulent security situation that both countries face and include a mutual defence pact. The text is expected to say that the countries 'shall assist on another' in case of an 'armed attack'. While Britain and Germany already have a commitment to mutual defence as Nato members, the treaty is expected to pave the way for greater defence cooperation, including in weapons development and operations. The leaders will use the opportunity to discuss their support for Ukraine after both governments are due to send a new tranche of weapons to Kyiv following a US-backed deal with Nato this week. - © AFP 2025

No evidence of economic issues for Ireland with Occupied Territories Bill

Employers' group Ibec has been asked to present evidence following its warning that it would be "incredibly difficult" for businesses to implement a ban on services coming from the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Secretary General of Amnesty International, Agnès Callamard, said that Ireland is not putting itself at economic risk in the US by implementing a ban on goods and services coming from the Occupied Palestinian Territories, adding that there is more Ireland could do to sanction Israel for its conduct in Gaza and the West Bank. She said that the latest information was that there is no evidence that the implementation of the Occupied Territories Bill will result in economic problems for Ireland. Ibec Executive Director of Lobbying and Influence Fergal O'Brien told the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade that services coming from the Occupied Palestinian Territories were "incredibly hard" to identify. Ms Callamard called on IBEC to present evidence following its warning. Speaking to RTÉ's Morning Ireland, she said that at the moment, Israel has preferential treatment by the EU territory regarding trade. She said that this needed to be stopped, as Israel is violating the EU's own rules on human rights. "This issue is not about isolating or not Israel, rather the EU working according to its own rules and upholding the principles at the heart of the European Project. "Not one action has been taken to stop Israel. It is time to take action to protect people from complete annihilation, it is a genocide." She added that Ireland was showing leadership in this regard, but it must continue the process to adopt the Occupied Territories Bill. She said that this would allow Ireland to meet its international obligations under the ICJ ruling on trade with the Occupied Territories. "Ireland has shown repeatedly that it can stand up to bullies, and there is nothing else apart from bullying Ireland coming out of the US." She said that international law and the international system were being destroyed by a "bullying state" and that this was not acceptable.
