Tesla to resume Chinese parts shipments for Cybercab, Semi truck
Tesla will resume shipping components from China to the United States by the end of May to support the production of its upcoming Cybercab and Semi truck models, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter.
The decision follows a recent US-China agreement to roll back most tariffs and countermeasures, marking a significant easing in trade tensions after high-level talks in Geneva.
The development is expected to immediately impact manufacturing and supply chains for American companies reliant on Chinese imports.
Tesla had previously halted shipment plans after President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%, threatening production schedules for the Cybercab and Semi.
The tariff truce, announced Monday, clears the path for trial production of the Cybercab in Texas and the Semi in Nevada starting in October. Mass production is targeted for 2026.
The Cybercab is Tesla's upcoming autonomous electric vehicle designed without a steering wheel or pedals. It is part of a planned robotaxi service, with the car expected to cost under $30,000.
Tesla is currently seeking state-level approvals to deploy the service across the US.
The Semi, Tesla's electric truck, is also scheduled for scaled production in 2026, with deliveries to clients such as PepsiCo.
The source cautioned that the situation remains fluid due to the Trump administration's unpredictable stance on trade. Tesla declined to comment.
CEO Elon Musk has openly opposed tariffs and lobbied Trump to ease trade restrictions, citing delays in critical equipment imports needed for US factory expansion.
CFO Vaibhav Taneja added that tariffs had negatively impacted Tesla's capital investment plans.

Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek released on Thursday an upgrade to its flagship V3 model that the company says has a feature that can optimize it for Chinese-made chips, along with faster processing speeds. The focus on domestic chip compatibility may signal that DeepSeek's AI models are being positioned to work with China's emerging semiconductor ecosystem as Beijing pushes to replace US technology in the face of Washington's export restrictions. DeepSeek shook the technology world this year when it released AI models that compete with Western ones like OpenAI's ChatGPT while offering lower operational costs. For domestic chip support, DeepSeek said in a WeChat post its DeepSeek-V3.1 model's UE8M0 FP8 precision format is optimised for "soon-to-be-released next-generation domestic chips". The company did not identify which specific chip models or manufacturers would be supported. FP8, or 8-bit floating point, is a data processing format that allows AI models to operate more efficiently, using less memory while running faster than traditional methods. Trump hails ‘total victory' as US court quashes $464mn civil penalty
NEW YORK: A US court threw out Thursday a $464 million civil penalty against President Donald Trump imposed by a judge who found he fraudulently inflated his personal worth, calling the sum 'excessive' but upholding the judgment against him. Judge Arthur Engoron ruled against Trump in February 2024 at the height of his campaign to retake the White House, which coincided with several active criminal prosecutions that the Republican slammed as 'lawfare.' 'It was a Political Witch Hunt, in a business sense, the likes of which no one has ever seen before,' Trump said on his Truth Social platform Thursday, adding that 'everything I did was absolutely CORRECT and, even, PERFECT.' When Engoron originally ruled against Trump, he ordered the mogul-turned-politician to pay $464 million, including interest, while his sons Eric and Don Jr. were told to hand over more than $4 million each. The judge found that Trump and his company had unlawfully inflated his wealth and manipulated the value of properties to obtain favorable bank loans or insurance terms. Alongside the financial hit to Trump, the judge also banned him from running businesses for three years, which the president repeatedly referred to as a 'corporate death penalty.' On Thursday, five judges of the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court upheld the verdict, but ruled that the size of the fine was 'excessive' and that it 'violates the Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution.'
