Tesla to resume Chinese parts shipments for Cybercab, Semi truck

A Tesla Cybercab is displayed at the Los Angeles Auto Show, in Los Angeles, California, U.S., November 21, REUTERS Tesla will resume shipping components from China to the United States by the end of May to support the production of its upcoming Cybercab and Semi truck models, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter. The decision follows a recent US-China agreement to roll back most tariffs and countermeasures, marking a significant easing in trade tensions after high-level talks in Geneva. The development is expected to immediately impact manufacturing and supply chains for American companies reliant on Chinese imports. Tesla had previously halted shipment plans after President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%, threatening production schedules for the Cybercab and Semi. The tariff truce, announced Monday, clears the path for trial production of the Cybercab in Texas and the Semi in Nevada starting in October. Mass production is targeted for 2026. The Cybercab is Tesla's upcoming autonomous electric vehicle designed without a steering wheel or pedals. It is part of a planned robotaxi service, with the car expected to cost under $30,000. Tesla is currently seeking state-level approvals to deploy the service across the US. The Semi, Tesla's electric truck, is also scheduled for scaled production in 2026, with deliveries to clients such as PepsiCo. The source cautioned that the situation remains fluid due to the Trump administration's unpredictable stance on trade. Tesla declined to comment. CEO Elon Musk has openly opposed tariffs and lobbied Trump to ease trade restrictions, citing delays in critical equipment imports needed for US factory expansion. CFO Vaibhav Taneja added that tariffs had negatively impacted Tesla's capital investment plans.

The Genesis X Gran Coupe Concept Is a Korean Take on the Lexus LC

Unlike most automotive luxury brands, Genesis has yet to produce a proper two-door model, despite teasing its customers with concept models like the X Convertible concepts at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2022. The future may hold a different path for the Korean automaker, however — at least, based on how close to production-ready the new Genesis X Gran Coupe Concept and X Gran Convertible Concept unveiled at the 2025 Seoul Mobility Show appear. Unlike the all-electric X Convertible, both the X Gran Convertible and X Gran Coupe concepts are born from the brand's flagship executive sedan, the G90, which currently only comes in internal-combustion form. The design, however, has been significantly revised; if the basic idea brings to mind the Lexus LC or the departed Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet, a glance at the new concepts revives memories of Chrysler's best years of A-body car construction, starting with the tapered rear roofline of the hardtop. The addition of widened fenders, miniature wings, and a low beltline make the pair a veritable homage to the days of boxy American muscle. But there are plenty of aspects of the G90 present in both hardtop and droptop cars. The model-specific front fascias of the X Coupe Concept and X Convertible concepts share the brand's characteristic two-line headlights and the so-called "Crest Grille," which looks vaguely like the outline of Superman's logo. Genesis says the twin models have a more steeply raked windscreen and lowered tops; this is very apparent in photos, as the roofline drops away the further back you look. That doesn't mean that entering and exiting should be hard, though. To allow for smooth transitions, Genesis has lengthened the doors and added frameless windows versus the G90. Luxury car buyers are usually the type to enjoy the finer things in life, which seems liable to be the explanation for Genesis's color scheme on the X Gran Coupe and Convertible models. The hardtop version is officially painted in a hue inspired by Mediterranean olives and paired with olive wood veneer. Italian olive oil has been integrated into the scent of the X Gran Coupe's cabin via the natural leather tanning process, helping jog smell-based memories. The convertible's color, meanwhile, represents Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Livorno region of Italy. Genesis has yet to clarify if the concepts use a version of the G90's 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6, which makes 409 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque; in terms of performance, the brand has only discussed its ergonomic approach to driving fun, as both concepts feature an aluminum-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel. That's sparse information about its chops, but Genesis models are rarely short on grunt. Here's hoping we eventually see these cars rolling around with a forced-induction, torque-laden V-6 beneath their hoods, ready to startle Mustang drivers at stoplights. The Next-Gen Hyundai Nexo Looks Awesome, It's Just A Shame Hydrogen Isn't Gonna Happen

After previewing it with the Initium concept at last year's Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai has revealed the second generation of the Nexo hydrogen fuel-cell crossover, and it looks awesome. It's nearly identical to that concept, in fact, with a boxy design that looks totally unlike any other Hyundai while still obviously looking like a Hyundai. The second-gen Nexo also has a luxe interior and a new, more efficient powertrain. Too bad hydrogen cars still just aren't gonna happen, despite Hyundai calling the new Nexo "a significant milestone in hydrogen mobility." The first-gen Nexo was handsome and interesting enough but didn't really stand out among a sea of other softly shaped crossovers. This new one, though, is rad as hell. Hyundai's new design language is called Art of Steel, which it says "reflects the inherent strength and natural formability of the material." The new Nexo is boxy and bold, with a Pontiac Aztek–like C- and D-pillar setup that actually works, angular creases and cutlines, prominent cladding and H-shaped bumper elements. What Hyundai calls "HTWO" lights (the brand's "Hydrogen for Humanity" message), a large square made up of four small squares of light, are used as the front foglights and taillights. It all just looks rad as hell. Read more: The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe Is The Crossover To End All Crossovers On the inside the second-gen Nexo looks more similar to other new Hyundais like the Palisade, but it still has some unique design elements. Though its wheelbase is the same, the new model is longer, wider and taller than the outgoing Nexo, and it has more passenger and cargo space as a result. Hyundai says the cargo area can fit four golf bags, and there's some sort of customizable platform for accessories. The rear doors open wider than before, too. The two-tier dashboard has an upper section that looks padded like a space suit, with the door panels ribbed to match. There's a curved dual-screen display and a row of climate controls in the dash, and the center console affixed to the floor has storage cubbies and cupholders. Then you've got an "island-type" armrest with charging ports and pads, some hard controls and the fingerprint sensors. The Nexo will be available with Hyundai's Premium Relaxation Seats that recline far back and have extendable legrests, as well as ventilated seats, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, ambient lighting, a "vision roof" (no idea what that is yet), new active-safety features, a built-in front and rear dash cam and other tech items. Powering the Nexo is a 2.6-kWh battery pack with an 80-kW output (up by 1 kWh and 40 kW), a trio of 6.7-kg hydrogen tanks (up from 6.3 kg), and an electric motor that makes 201 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque (up by 40 hp and down by 33 lb-ft). The hydrogen fuel-cell stack now delivers a gross power of 148 hp, up by 16%, and total output from the whole powertrain system is now 258 hp, an increase of 77 hp. Hyundai says the new Nexo will hit 62 mph in 7.8 seconds, an improvement of a second and a half, and it will have a range of more than 435 miles. A route planner in the infotainment system aims to make long trips and fill-ups easier to plan. The fuel-cell stack has improved durability and low-temperature operation, with a new "Wake Up" anti-freezing function that should make the Nexo easy to start year-round. Hyundai implemented all sorts of aerodynamic enhancements to increase efficiency and reduce noise, plus the Nexo wears special tires and has an active noise cancelation system. The regenerative braking system has an adaptive mode that takes into account navigation data, speed cameras, speed humps and the cars around you. Hyundai says the new Nexo is "coming to global markets later this year" as part of the company's push to be "a pioneer in hydrogen mobility." That will ostensibly include the U.S., where the first-gen Nexo has been sold since 2018. But as cool as I think the new Nexo is, and as much as I would love it if hydrogen tech suddenly became widespread, I just don't think it's going to happen — and especially not in the U.S. with Trump in the White House. Global hydrogen car sales dropped by 22% in 2024 with only 12,866 new fuel-cell vehicles registered worldwide. To put that into perspective, Hyundai sold 44,400 electric Ioniq 5s just in the U.S. last year. Of those 12,866 hydrogen cars sold globally last year, 7,113 went to China and 3,688 went to South Korea, the latter being a 20.4% drop. In its seven-year lifespan Hyundai has sold barely 40,000 Nexos, fewer than 2,000 of which went to American consumers. The number of hydrogen stations in the U.S. is dwindling too, down to just 54 last year, the vast majority of which are in California. Though Hyundai says it's committed to expanding hydrogen infrastructure, and I'm sure that may be possible in Asia and other parts of the world (if only for trucking), I can't help but think the new Nexo would be a much better product if it were just one of Hyundai's excellent EVs. Will Toyota's New EV Stick with the Brand's Awful Naming Scheme?

On Tuesday, Toyota announced it will be releasing a new electric SUV for European customers on the evening of March 11 here in the United States. While the teaser image only offers a general peek at the design of the new EV and the brand is offering nothing in terms of specs of the upcoming model, the profile and lights do strike a notable resemblance to the brand's previous bZ Compact SUV concept. The aforementioned concept made its debut during the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2022, and slots comfortably below the existing bZ4X offering. The compact SUV concept sat around 6.0 inches shorter than the bZ4X, while also sitting 3.6 inches lower overall. A hint of extra width did give the concept a muscular appearance, though whether that will carry over to the production model will have to be seen; the teaser image does highlight a similar coupe-like design language, with wide hips and high-rising fenders. The lighting elements and fascia are largely obscured, but they do appear to follow suit with the cues found on refreshed Camry, Crown, and Prius models. The automaker has yet to share any hints about the powertrain beneath the new model. That said, the recently-unveiled Urban Cruiser could give us some hints as to what Toyota has planned for the small SUV. That model offers either a 49.0-kWh or 61.0-kWh battery pack, which offers 142 hp and 172 hp, respectively. Opt for the dual-motor motor and output jumps to 181 hp. For reference, the bZ4X makes between 201 hp and 215 hp, depending on configuration. Toyota Europe will pull the cover off of the new model on March 11 at 6:01 pm EDT. Given the recent rumors surrounding the short future of the bZ moniker, perhaps we'll get our first taste of Toyota's updated EV naming structure. There's no word yet as to whether or not the brand plans to bring the EV SUV to the States, given the debut event hasn't been mentioned by the automaker's North American counterparts. That doesn't mean the model won't make its way here at some point, however — and even if it doesn't, sooner or later, we'll be seeing more electric Toyotas at Toyotathon.
