Honda Prelude returns: Retro magic meets hybrid innovation in new sports coupe

Time of India14-07-2025
Honda's iconic Prelude is making a celebrated comeback, blending its revered retro styling with cutting-edge hybrid technology to captivate a new generation of drivers. After years of anticipation, Honda has confirmed that the all-new, sixth-generation Prelude will enter production and reach U.S. showrooms in late 2025, marking its first return since the model's discontinuation in 2001.
The new Prelude, first previewed as a concept at the 2023
Japan Mobility Show
and later showcased at the
Los Angeles Auto Show
, stays true to its sporty coupe heritage. Its design echoes the classic lines that made the original a favorite among enthusiasts, while introducing a modern, aerodynamic silhouette and bold color options like Crystal Black Pearl and Rallye Red. The coupe's full LED headlight system and connected taillights further enhance its contemporary appeal, and premium touches such as sequential turn signals are expected to be available.
Under the hood, the Prelude is powered by Honda's award-winning two-motor hybrid powertrain, likely a variant of the system found in the
Accord
, Civic, and CR-V hybrids. This setup pairs a
2.0-liter four-cylinder engine
with electric motors, delivering an estimated output between 200 and 240 horsepower, balancing spirited performance with eco-friendly efficiency. The hybrid system is part of Honda's broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and transition all sales to battery-electric and fuel-cell vehicles by 2040.
A standout feature in the new Prelude is the debut of Honda's innovative S+ Shift mode. This technology is engineered to maximize driver engagement by simulating sharp gear changes, precisely controlling engine RPM during acceleration and deceleration, and synchronizing engine sounds through the Active Sound System. Honda claims this will 'stimulate all of the driver's senses,' offering a dynamic and immersive driving experience reminiscent of the Prelude's athletic legacy.
Inside, the Prelude promises a blend of luxury and technology. The cabin is expected to feature a 12.3-inch touchscreen, customizable digital displays, premium leather and aluminum trim, and amenities such as heated and ventilated front seats, wireless charging, and a Bose premium sound system. Safety will be bolstered by Honda's
Sensing 360 suite
, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, and
Automatic Emergency Braking
.
Live Events
Pricing details have yet to be finalized, but industry estimates suggest a range from $49,000 to $60,000, with multiple trims–EX, Touring, and Elite–offering varying levels of performance and luxury. The Touring trim is expected to provide the best balance of features and efficiency.
