Why all Kerala roads lead to Nilambur today
Just 10 months ahead of the assembly election due in April-May next year, Nilambur voters will choose their MLA in the bypoll on June 19 and the results will be declared on June 23. When the three-week-long poll campaign concluded in the evening of June 17, both the rival alliances—the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF)—claimed they would be victorious by a margin of 10,000 votes. The ruling CPI(M) has fielded M. Swaraj, a senior youth leader from the constituency, against Congress leader Aryadan Shoukath, son of veteran Congress leader Aryadan Muhammed, who represented Nilambur for 34 years. P.V. Anvar, who resigned as MLA after rebelling against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the CPI(M), and was a two-term independent MLA before becoming the state convenor of the Trinamool Congress, is also in the fray.advertisementThe National Democratic Alliance led by the BJP has fielded a Christian, Advocate Mohan George, to test the waters with the Christian minorities in the Muslim-dominated constituency. The NDA is likely trying for communal polarisation by wooing the Christians—around 20 per cent of the Nilambur voters—into its fold.Nilambur has 2.32 lakh voters on the list and whoever gets around 73,000 votes will emerge as the winner. 'Swaraj will win by over 10,000 votes,' says V.P. Anil, CPI(M) district secretary. 'Nilambur will vote for the developmental politics that the Left government is promoting.'
The Congress, for which winning the bypoll is important for political survival, offered associate membership in the UDF to the Jamaat-e-Islami's political outfit, the Welfare Party. Meanwhile, CM Pinarayi, who led the poll campaign from June 14 to 16, has said his party 'doesn't want votes from communal parties such as the Social Democratic Party of India, the political outfit of the banned Popular Front of India, or the Jamaat-e-Islami that supports the Congress'. Pinarayi tagged the radical Islamic outfits as 'politically untouchables for the Left'.advertisementThe LDF is determined to retain Nilambur also because its former independent legislator Anvar resigned after hurling serious accusations of corruption at the Chief Minister's Office and additional DGP M.R. Ajithkumar, who handled law and order, and was removed from the post following the allegations.Anvar, meanwhile, is negotiating with the Indian Union Muslim League and their opponents, the Samastha Ulama organisation, the largest Sunni scholarly outfit with the most support among Kerala's Muslims. He met Samastha president Jifri Muthukoya Thangal on June 17 at Malappuram.'The UDF had an upper edge in the constituency since Anvar revolted against the CPI(M), but the Congress could not exploit this advantage after the former MLA repositioned himself in the contest as an independent candidate,' says Firoz Usman, a Nilambur resident. 'If Anvar polls around 25,000 votes, the LDF candidate will win with a 5,000-vote margin as the CPI(M) has a solid vote bank of 33 per cent. As Anvar has 20,000 loyal voters, if he trades his votes to the UDF at the last minute, the Congress-led alliance will win.'Indeed, while the Anvar factor will likely turn the Nilambur bypoll into a thrilling political encounter, the CM's campaign focused on the merits of welfare-driven governance. The Congress made an attempt to expose the government's shortcomings with a road show involving Priyanka Gandhi, who represents Wayanad—a constituency that includes the Nilambur assembly segment—in the Lok Sabha. The Rahul factor was missing, though. When the results are declared on June 23, it would indicate the party's chances in 2026 as well. And if the Congress loses the assembly polls, Pinarayi will get a straight third term in power.advertisementSubscribe to India Today Magazine

30 Arrested For Attempting To Spark Communal Violence In Assam's Dhubri
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said more than 30 people have been arrested in connection with the recent incident in Dhubri where a cow's head was found in a sensitive area, sparking communal tensions. Five people have also been arrested in similar incidents in Lakhimpur district. Speaking to the media in Guwahati on Wednesday, Chief Minister Sarma said, "In the Dhubri case, there have been many arrests - over 30 people. And yesterday, in Lakhimpur, five arrests were made after three cows' heads were placed in front of a Namghar (Vaishnavite prayer hall). The police will begin further action from today. The matter is serious, but I believe it will be resolved within a day or two." The chief minister also used the opportunity to strongly criticise Rahul Gandhi, linking the incidents to what he described as the Congress leader's "mentality." "Only people of a particular community keep beef in this manner. This is Rahul Gandhi's mentality. If a Hindu wants to keep meat, he will keep pork, not beef. This reflects the poisonous mindset of Rahul Gandhi," Mr Sarma said. The remarks have sparked strong reactions from the opposition, with leaders calling his statements polarising and provocative at a time when communal tensions are already high in Assam. After tensions had flared, the police had issued shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri last week. At the time, Mr Sarma had said that a Bangladesh-backed organisation, Nobin Bangla, had put up provocative posters, demanding that Dhubri should be part of the country. "These posters indicate that a communal force backed by Bangladesh is active in Dhubri and they are working to destabilise the district," he had said. The chief minister also alleged that a "new beef mafia" had emerged in Dhubri, which procured thousands of animals just before Eid al-Adha.

Gujarat: Bypolls In Visavadar, Kadi Assembly Constituencies To Be Held Today
Ahmedabad: Bypolls to the Visavadar and Kadi assembly seats in Gujarat will be held on Thursday, where the BJP, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have put up their candidates. Votes will be counted on June 23. Eligible voters will be allowed to cast their ballots between 7 am and 8 pm, election officials said on Wednesday. The state government has declared a public holiday in both constituencies on the voting day, said the office of Gujarat's Chief Electoral Officer. It said votes would be cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at 294 polling stations in each constituency. The Visavadar seat in Junagadh district has been lying vacant since December 2023, after the then AAP legislator Bhupendra Bhayani resigned and joined the ruling BJP. While the BJP has nominated Kirit Patel for the bypoll in Visavadar, Congress has fielded Nitin Ranpariya. AAP's former Gujarat president Gopal Italia is also in the fray. Despite its near-total dominance in the state, the BJP hasn't won the Vasavadar seat since 2007. Party leaders said they are hopeful of overcoming the 18-year jinx here. In the last assembly election in 2022, AAP's Bhupendra Bhayani had defeated BJP's Harshad Ribadiya, a Congress turncoat and former MLA, by 7,063 votes. The Kadi seat in Mehsana district, a constituency reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, has been lying vacant since February 4, following the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki. The BJP has fielded Rajendra Chavda from Kadi, while Congress has given the ticket to Ramesh Chavda, a former MLA. Ramesh Chavda had won the seat in 2012, but lost it to BJP's Karsanbhai Solanki in 2017. Like the Visavadar, the Kadi seat will also witness a three-way fight, with the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP fielding Jagdish Chavda. In the 182-member Gujarat assembly, the BJP has 161 legislators, Congress 12 and AAP four. While one seat is with the Samajwadi Party, two are with independents.
