Exhibition in York celebrates legacy of famous Willow nightclub
The Willow Experience exhibition, being held on Friday 13 June as part of York Festival of Ideas, would feature a series of six short archive films exploring the venue's 42-year history, Ms Fong explained.It would include punters' memories from over the decades, interviews with the Fong family, and footage from the final club night.There would also be memorabilia, merchandise emblazoned with the "Love It Or Hate It?" logo - and even prawn crackers to snack on. "To be able to put together the legacy of my family's business, and for it to be visible and available to everybody, is incredible," Ms Fong said.
Her parents had not previously understood the huge role The Willow had played in York's nightlife for such a long time, Ms Fong explained."I think for my parents, they were just working really long hours," she said."[My dad] was just consumed in the job and I don't think he realised the impact he had on people."Trying to explain to him how important and symbolic it became in people's lives, I think it's only since we started putting the archive together he's starting to understand."Ms Fong said The Willow Experience exhibition was a collaboration between the digital consultancy agency she had co-founded and the StreetLife York project, led by the University of York in partnership with the city council, York Civic Trust and York Music Venues Network.Running between 2022-23, and originally focused on the history of Coney Street, Ms Fong said that after so many contributors to StreetLife York mentioned The Willow, the university made the venue the subject of a separate project."I think that's what's really lovely about it. When you talk about The Willow, it does evoke different responses," she said."Some people hated it, some people loved it - but it just evoked so many different emotions."
Ms Fong said that as part of Friday's event, she would divulge some behind-the-scenes secrets about The Willow, including the story behind the famous hand-drawn illustrations decorating the nightclub's walls. She said she still regularly received emails from people wanting to put on "a Willow-themed hen do or a Willow-themed wedding".She explained she had even received a request from a couple who had recently had a baby and wanted a customised artwork celebrating the nightclub to hang over her crib. "The concept of that is just bonkers - having artwork from a late-night disco that was also a Chinese restaurant," Ms Fong said."When you look at the business, you think nobody would ever propose that as a business model. But it just seemed to work."There's something really beautiful about that, and I think the beauty is the stories and the friendship and the love."The Willow Experience is due to take place at The Basement, City Screen Picturehouse, on Coney Street, between 18:00 BST and 19:00 BST on Friday 13 June.

Why teachers' reactions Adolescence reveal ‘problem with schooling'
The writer and co-creator of hit Netflix series Adolescence has revealed his concerns to teachers ' reactions to the show. Jack Thorne said teachers' responses to the show showed 'we've got a real problem in our country' when it comes to schooling. The four-part series explores misogyny among teenage boys and prompted a national conversation about online safety when it was released in March. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Thorne said: 'I worked in a school, (executive producer) Hannah (Walters) spent a long time in schools, and we both had a real passion to talk about schools that aren't doing so well. 'And it was so interesting the response, because there was teachers going, 'That would never happen in schools', and then other teachers going, 'You've got that spot on'. 'And what that showed is, we've got a real problem in our country, because there's a certain level of schooling which is complacent about the schools that we're allowing to sink.' One of the episodes in the series is filmed in a school and shows Ashley Walters ' character, DI Luke Bascombe, interviewing children who are friendly with 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), who has been accused of murdering his school friend. Also in the session, Netflix executive Mona Qureshi, responded to Channel 4 news boss Louisa Compton accusing the streamer of behaving like 'TV tourists' earlier at the TV festival. Compton also called the channel 'proud parents' of Adolescence because of the opportunities they had given Thorne and actor and co-creator Stephen Graham over the years, according to reports. 'I don't think I'm a tourist,' Qureshi said. 'Nothing about where I am and where we sit and the conversations we had about and around Adolescence at the beginning really came out of anything other than us.' Thorne said he 'started out' with Channel 4, adding: 'I'm really grateful for Channel 4, but I'm excited that Netflix is moving into this space.' In March, Thorne, 46, spoke to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at Downing Street about the issues raised in the drama. This Is England star Graham co-created the drama with Thorne and starred as Eddie Miller, the father of Jamie. The series took months of preparation and rehearsals so that each episode could be filmed in one continuous shot, which was praised by viewers of the show. The show has received 13 Emmy nominations, including for its young star Cooper, for best supporting actor in a limited series.

Channel 5 boss announces ‘axe' of 80s reboot after one series – and there's still an episode that has never aired
CHANNEL 5 has confirmed that Challenge Anneka is officially axed - a year after it was pulled off-air. The TV channel tried to revive the iconic 80s series, starring Anneka Rice, in 2024, but after just three episodes it was pulled from schedules due to poor ratings. 6 6 6 Speaking today, the team confirmed the series will not be recommissioned, but didn't comment if the final episode is yet to air. Channel 5's Ben Frow said: "We realised two weeks before we put it out, it's a make up show, and they did home renovation shows since then. "The world changed so much, what Annika was doing – which was innovative 30 years ago – was [different to] now, and we won't go there again." On Challenge Anneka, Rice was given a two-to-three day deadline for a massive task to help a local community. The host then had to use her charm to get free labour and donations to complete her mission. Channel 5 picked up the series for a four-episode reboot and placed on primetime Saturday night in their scheduling. Initially, it seemed like it could be a success, with 1.25million viewers tuning in to see Anneka back in action. However, after battling against juggernaut Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and BBC's Starstruck, the show saw a dramatic ratings clump, and just two episodes later it was canned. At the time, a spokesperson said: 'The public and critical reaction to Challenge Anneka's return has been amazing and we have decided to preserve the remaining two shows and reschedule them soon. "We want to preserve the series to ensure that each episode gets the best audience possible." The first episode saw Anneka help a struggling dog rescue project at Foal Farm to build new facilities, while episode two focused on the growth of a food hub charity. Episode three was declared a "Dementia Special" in partnership with Age UK, with the team building a "memory village" for those with the syndrome, which sees brain function - particularly memory - decline. However, the final episode – which is meant to show Anneka and her team helping out Luton Sea and Royal Marine Cadets – is yet to ever make it to screen. In the challenge, the team have to design a medal for outstanding achievement, as well as refurbishing their cadets' training facilities, giving their overnight accommodation, training boats and equipment an overhaul. 6 6 6

The Globe amps up Twelfth Night's gender fluidity and homoeroticism
It may take its title from a post-Christmas festival, but the Globe's new carnivalesque production of Twelfth Night is proof that the beginning of the end of summer is a perfect time to stage Shakespeare's popular comedy. In this iteration, designer Jean Chan's gleefully mishmashes the costumes by era and style which adds to the atmosphere of licensed disorder. The play refuses to take itself seriously and director Robin Belfield's production follows suit, leaning into its farcical elements and joyous spirit. The director amps up the text's gender fluidity and homoeroticism: Sebastian and Antonio kiss and there's a suggestion that Viola is subconsciously attracted to Olivia. Belfield is also adept at ensuring that Shakespeare's language is delivered with an evenly paced clarity in this ensemble piece. He does all this with a wonderful eye for character diversity, physicality and gestural detail. Separated during a storm, twins Viola and Sebastian are shipwrecked off the coast of Illyria and believe each other to be dead. Viola, played with tomboyish charm by Ronkę Adékoluéjo, disguises herself as the male Cesario, becomes a servant to the lovelorn Duke Orsino (Solomon Israel) and promptly falls in love with him. Sent by the Duke to court Olivia (Laura Hanna), Viola finds herself embroiled in a love triangle when Olivia becomes infatuated with 'Cesario'. Elsewhere, Sebastian (Kwami Odoom) has survived the storm with help from fugitive Antonio (Max Keeble). Pearce Quigley gives the star turn of the night with his finely-tuned Malvolio. He delivers exactly the right mix of delusion, hubris and sanctimoniousness to sustain Malvolio's ridiculousness and the audience's sense of schadenfreude. It prevents the character from becoming too tragic even when his comeuppance at the hands of the perpetually inebriated Lady Belch (a gender-flipped Toby Belch) seems over the top. While the troupe of actors has a riot telling us this tale of intersecting desire, power and mistaken identity, the production stumbles a little in its propulsive action, especially at the beginning of the play. Some of the actors lacked a flow and finesse with the language which made the action initially seem stilted and sluggish. Thankfully, the energy lifted when the cast co-opted a couple of the groundlings to join the action on stage. Perhaps the quest for comedy glosses over the play's more melancholic undertones? That too is a minor gripe because overall, this summer jamboree is riotous fun and joyfully tongue-in-cheek.
