Jersey sales surge for Arsenal, Newcastle United and AC Milan ahead of Singapore friendlies

SINGAPORE: Jersey sales of Arsenal, Newcastle United and AC Milan in Singapore have jumped by more than 20 per cent as football fever hits town.
Local fans told CNA that they are excited to welcome the teams, with many hoping to catch a glimpse of their favourite players and even score autographs during their visit.
These European clubs are in Singapore this week for two pre-season friendly matches at the National Stadium.
SURGE IN SALES
Arsenal will take on Italian giant AC Milan on Wednesday (Jul 23), before taking Premier League rivals Newcastle on Sunday.
Sports store Weston Corp has been accelerating preparations this week, including for an AC Milan event in Singapore on Tuesday, geared up to welcome both players and fans.
It said that pre-season tours such as these often bring a surge in foot traffic and sales.
'Every time there's a pre-season (tour here), we do see an uptick in business,' said Mr Ami Chopra, sales director of football at Weston Corp.
'When those jerseys launch, you do see a slight, significant increase. Come closer to the date, people (feel like because their) team's playing, they need to wear something,' he added.
'So usually (because of) impulse buys, (we) will have quite a big spike in sales.'
The store will also run pop-up booths offering exclusive gear on match days, with extra staff on hand to meet the expected rise in demand.
BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER
For Newcastle fan Terence Ong, buying jerseys is a ritual.
He has amassed 85 Magpies shirts in his collection since the 1990s, including the Carabao Cup winners' print this year to celebrate the club's first domestic trophy in more than 70 years.
The local fan club NUFC-SG has also produced a special tee to mark Newcastle's visit.
'I think the club is realising now that there is an untapped market in Asia,' said Mr Ong, who is a committee member of the fan club.
'I like to think that it shows a trend that they want to engage the Asian fans a lot more,' he added. 'And for us, getting our fellow official supporters clubs down from the other parts of Asia itself represents more than just strengthening our bonds, it also gives all of us a chance to show Newcastle United the power or the strength of the Asian fan base here.'
For him and Singapore's 2,000-strong Toon army, football is also about bringing people together.
Plans for food drives and football clinics are in the pipeline to use sports to give back to the community.
For Arsenal fan Shaiful Rahman, he is looking to connect with fellow supporters from other Asian countries for the game.
'The main excitement for us is when we organise a fan party for all the regional friends who are coming to Singapore,' said the president of the Official Arsenal Singapore Supporters Club.
'It's kind of like a form of appreciation for them taking the trouble to fly here and getting to know each individual supporters club.'
He noted that there is also a deeper purpose behind it all, adding: 'It's the networking, getting to know each other, being Singaporean, supporting one another. I think that is the key to it.'

TOKYO :The Bank of Japan is set to keep interest rates steady on Thursday and offer a cautiously optimistic view on the economic outlook, after Tokyo's trade deal with Washington cleared some uncertainty surrounding its fragile recovery. Markets are focusing on any hints Governor Kazuo Ueda may offer on the likelihood of another rate hike this year, as the central bank weighs lingering tariff-induced risks to growth and mounting inflationary pressure from higher food costs. "Given the high degree of uncertainty, I understand a wait and see stance is necessary for now," former BOJ Deputy Governor Hiroshi Nakaso told Reuters, warning U.S. tariffs and slowing global demand will weigh on Japan's economy. "But once the uncertainties clear enough for the BOJ to restore confidence that the economic and inflation trajectory will move in line with their projections, I think they will be back on their way to the next rate hike," he said. At the two-day meeting ending on Thursday, the BOJ is widely expected to keep short-term interest rates steady at 0.5 per cent. In a quarterly report, the BOJ is likely to revise up this fiscal year's inflation forecast but maintain its view that underlying inflation - or price moves driven by domestic demand - remains short of its 2 per cent target, sources have told Reuters. The BOJ may offer a less gloomy view on the economy compared with the current one focused on tariff-induced risks, but likely to warn of lingering uncertainty on how the higher U.S. levy affects business activity, separate sources said. "A weak real economy, a lack of demand-driven price pressure and lingering trade uncertainty will keep the central bank on hold," said Stefan Angrick, head of Japan and Frontier markets Economics at Moody's Analytics. "Our best guess is that the central bank will next hike rates in January, though a hike may come as early as December 2025," he said. A Reuters poll, taken before the Japan-U.S. trade deal announcement earlier this month, showed a majority of economists expect the BOJ to raise rates again by year-end. Japan's trade deal struck with President Donald Trump this month lowers U.S. tariffs for imports of goods including its mainstay automobiles, easing the pain for the export-reliant economy and clearing a key hurdle for further BOJ rate hikes. The positive development contrasts with the gloom that surrounded the economy on May 1, when the BOJ produced its current estimates amid heightened market volatility caused by Trump's April announcement of sweeping "reciprocal" tariffs. But the BOJ has not let its guard down yet. Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida warned earlier this month that it was still hard to tell how much damage U.S. tariffs and slowing global trade could inflict on Japan's economy. The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday edged up its global growth forecast on front-loading demand from firms seeking to beat tariffs, but warned of major risks to the outlook including a potential rebound in tariffs. The key would be whether Japan's big manufacturers, which have been key drivers of wage hikes, will continue to increase pay as their profits get squeezed by U.S. tariffs, analysts say. The BOJ exited a decade-long, massive stimulus last year and raised its short-term policy rate to 0.5 per cent in January on the view Japan was progressing towards durably achieving its price goal. While Governor Ueda has signaled a pause in rate hikes after Trump's April 2 announcement of "reciprocal" tariffs, Japan's trade deal with the U.S. has revived market expectations of an increase in its short-term policy rate to 0.75 per cent by year-end. Some hawkish BOJ board members have stressed the need to pay more attention to upside risks to prices with stubbornly high food costs keeping core inflation above the bank's 2 per cent target for well over three years. In current projections made on May 1, the BOJ projects core consumer inflation to hit 2.2 per cent in fiscal 2025, before slowing to 1.7 per cent in 2026 and 1.9 per cent in 2027.

Wataru Endo said he could not join Yokohama F Marinos after a trial at the J-League club years ago, after the Japan midfielder returned to his hometown side on Wednesday as a Liverpool player. It was the first time Endo played in the Liverpool shirt in his own country as the Premier League champions beat Yokohama 3-1 in a pre-season friendly. "I supported this club actually and I went to (a) trial but I couldn't join this club. Now I came back here as a player of (Liverpool). It was a dream-come-true moment," the 32-year-old told Liverpool's official website. "It was an amazing moment for me because I came back to Japan as a Liverpool player. For me, it meant a lot." Endo made his senior debut at Shonan Bellmare, a club based in Hiratsuka, over 30 kilometres away from Yokohama. He played for Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart before joining Liverpool in 2023. Virgil van Dijk handed Endo the captain's armband as the latter replaced the Dutchman in the second half. "I think it was a great gesture.
