Donating blood isn't just life-saving, it is good for your heart too

"Donating blood saves lives" - is not just a motto blood banks use on World Blood Donor Day, it's also a step toward a healthier India.A Lancet report revealed that India faces the world's largest blood shortage, with a national shortfall of over 41 million units. The demand for blood outpaces supply by more than 400%.On average, a unit of blood is needed every two seconds across the country. While 14.6 million units are required annually, there's still a persistent shortage of 1 million units.advertisement
But amid this crisis, experts say blood donation doesn't just benefit the person who needs it but can also offers significant health perks to the donor."Donating blood is often perceived solely as a charitable act that helps others. But it also carries health benefits for the donor, particularly in terms of cardiovascular wellness," Dr. Ujjawal Kumar, senior consultant, cardiology, Sarvodaya Hospital, told IndiaToday.in.A MINI HEALTH CHECKBefore donating blood, you undergo a quick health screening. This can flag early signs of health issues like high or low haemoglobin levels, blood pressure irregularities, or rare blood types.

Dr. Kumar explained that iron regulation plays an important role."Iron is essential, but in excess, it can generate free radicals that damage blood vessel linings. This can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. By donating blood, you reduce excess iron, lowering that risk," he said. This is quite helpful for people with hereditary hemochromatosis, a condition where the body produces too much iron. These individuals are often advised to donate blood regularly, helping both their own health and blood banks in need.THINNER BLOOD, BETTER FLOWBlood viscosity, or thickness, can affect how hard your heart works. Thicker blood increases the risk of clots and puts strain on the heart.

"Blood donation helps thin the blood temporarily. This promotes better flow and can reduce clot-related risks," said Dr. Kumar. Each time you donate blood, your body is prompted to produce fresh blood cells. This renewal process helps maintain a healthy blood profile and support vascular health.Donating blood regularly also helps control blood pressure. "In certain individuals, especially those who suffer from borderline or mildly elevated blood pressure, donation can have a modest lowering effect. This is likely due to the temporary reduction in blood volume and improved vascular function, which reduces strain on the heart and arteries," added Dr. Kumar. Moreover, each blood donation triggers the body to produce new blood cells, which may help maintain a healthy blood profile. Some studies have suggested that this renewal process might have indirect positive effects on overall vascular function.THE FEEL-GOOD FACTORThere's also a psychological benefit to donating blood. Acts of kindness like this are linked to reduced stress, lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), and an improved sense of well-being - all of which have long-term heart health benefits.

Many worry about weakness or fatigue post-donation, but with proper hydration and rest, most people recover quickly.Dr. Kumar highlighted that blood donation should complement, not replace, your existing heart care routine: "Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, avoid tobacco, and monitor your cholesterol and blood pressure."So the next time you see a blood donation drive, remember: you're not just saving lives, you're gaining health.Trending Reel

Blood Donation Camp Organized on the Occasion of World Blood Donor Day in Dharur Mandal

Gadwal: On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, a Blood Donation Camp was successfully organized at the Rythu Vedika in Dharur Mandal, with the active involvement of local health and administrative officials. The event was graced by Program Officer Dr. G. Raju, who emphasized the importance of voluntary blood donation. Addressing the gathering, he spoke about the science behind blood compatibility, stressing that understanding blood groups is crucial for safe transfusions. 'Blood is classified into A, B, AB, and O groups based on the antigens present on red blood cells. If A antigen is present, it is Group A; if B antigen is present, it is Group B; if both are present, it's AB; and if neither is present, it is considered Group O,' he explained. Dr. Vineema, from the District Government Hospital Blood Center, also attended the camp with her team. She explained the significance of the Rh factor, stating, 'If red blood cells carry the Rh factor, the blood group is considered Rh-positive; if not, it's Rh-negative.' Quoting data from the World Population Review website, Dr. Vineema shared the distribution of blood groups in India: A Positive: 21.8% A Negative: 1.36% B Positive: 32.1% B Negative: 2% AB Positive: 7.7% AB Negative: 0.48% O Positive: 32.53% O Negative: 2% She also highlighted the presence of two extremely rare blood groups — the Bombay Blood Group and the Golden Blood Group, explaining their significance and the challenges associated with their identification and availability. The event saw participation from several key officials and volunteers: District NCD Coordinator Mr. Shyam Sundar Former Sarpanch Mr. Srinivas Reddy Blood Center Staff PRO Rakesh Lab Technician Mission Venkateshwar Reddy Local Organizer Mr. Srinivas Red Cross Society Mandal Secretary Md. RUHS hosp performs first angioplasty procedure, expands advanced cardiac services

Jaipur: RUHS Hospital conducted its first angioplasty procedure Saturday on a 67-year-old patient from Peepalu, Tonk district. The patient, who was suffering from cardiac issues, underwent an angiography test that revealed blockages, leading to the decision of angioplasty. The procedure was successfully completed. The patient is showing positive recovery signs, and the treatment was provided without cost under the Mukhyamantri Ayushman Arogya (MAA) Scheme, said a hospital official. Medical education secretary Ambrish Kumar said RUHS Hospital began offering angiography and angioplasty services from June 2, with two angiographies performed initially. Kumar explained that RUHS Hospital is expanding its medical services to decrease the patient load at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital while providing advanced medical facilities to state residents. The introduction of angiography and angioplasty services means cardiac patients can now receive treatment at RUHS Hospital instead of travelling all the way to SMS Hospital. This development offers an additional treatment centre for cardiac patients across the state and helps reduce the patient load at SMS Hospital. The hospital has also commenced plastic surgery services. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
