Farmers seek compensation for massive crop loss in Haryana due to virus outbreak, waterlogging
KURUKSHETRA: In an appeal to Haryana chief minister (CM) Nayab Singh Saini, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Charuni representatives from across the state have demanded immediate compensation for the losses incurred due to a virus outbreak in paddy crops and widespread waterlogging caused by excessive rainfall. In a letter addressed to CM Saini, BKU Charuni the farmers highlighted that this year, paddy crop across thousands of acres in multiple districts—including Karnal, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kaithal, Jind, Panipat, Rohtak, and Sonipat—have been severely affected by two viral diseases: Southern Rice Black Streak Dwarf Virus (SRBSDV) and Rice Gall Dwarf Virus (RGDV) . These diseases have resulted in stunted plant growth and root rot, rendering entire fields barren. According to agricultural experts, the virus outbreak is a relatively new phenomenon in the region and beyond the control of the farming community. Scientific surveys have confirmed the presence of these viruses and attributed the crop damage directly to them. In addition to the viral infestation, prolonged monsoon rains have caused waterlogging in fields, further compounding the crisis. This dual blow has left hundreds of farmers—both small and large landholders—facing serious financial distress. Donate For Health Donate Now Undo by Taboola by Taboola In their petition, the farmers have made two key demands: Proactive Government Intervention: The state government should take immediate and long-term steps to improve crop protection, seed quality, and disease control mechanisms to prevent such disasters in the future. Transparent Loss Assessment and Compensation: Authorities must conduct a fair, transparent, and prompt survey of the losses caused by both the virus and waterlogging. Based on this assessment, adequate compensation should be disbursed to all affected farmers without delay. Calling the situation 'unprecedented,' the letter urges CM Saini to take swift action to relieve the suffering of Haryana's farming community and ensure their financial recovery. The appeal comes at a time when farmers across the state are already reeling from rising input costs and unpredictable weather patterns, further underlining the urgent need for government support.

Haryana chief minister announces 100 sq yards plot for one lakh poor families
KURUKSHETRA: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday said that one lakh families categorized under 'Antyodaya', who do not possess land, will soon be allotted a 100 square yard plot each. "Following this milestone, the next phase will commence with the selection of an additional 1 lakh beneficiaries," he said. The chief minister was speaking at a programme in some villages of Ladwa constituency, an official statement said. The chief minister had earlier said that the state government will provide plots to the underprivileged families, fulfilling its commitment to ensure "a roof over every head". Saini has in the past targeted the previous Congress government, alleging they only made hollow promises of giving 100-square yard plots to the poor. They neither handed over possession nor provided registry papers, Saini had said. Meanwhile, the chief minister said starting from August 15, government hospitals in 10 districts that have been upgraded with modern facilities and equipment on the lines of private hospitals will begin offering treatment for all types of diseases. This initiative aims to provide the people of the state with high-quality healthcare services at affordable rates, he said. Saini, who also represents Ladwa assembly constituency, was speaking during the programme held in the villages of Dagali , Deeg, Beed Kalwa, and Dhanani . During the visit, the chief minister listened to public grievances and directed officials on the spot to address them promptly. He announced Rs 55.41 lakh for a clean drinking water pipeline in village Dagali, Rs 52.64 lakh for village Beed Kalwa, and Rs 27.15 lakh for village Dhanani. At Deeg, he laid the foundation stone for a primary health centre to be constructed at a cost of over Rs 6.38 crore. Additionally, the chief minister announced Rs 21 lakh for development works in each of the four villages and assured that all demand letters submitted by the respective sarpanches would be forwarded to the concerned departments for necessary action. Saini said that farmers in Kurukshetra district cultivate sunflowers on a large scale. Keeping this in view, the government has decided to establish a sunflower oil mill in Shahbad. Additionally, land has been identified in Rewari for setting up a mustard oil mill, he said. These two mills will help ensure that farmers receive fair prices for their sunflower and mustard crops, he said. He further said that Haryana is the first state in the country where all crops are being procured at Minimum Support Price (MSP). "Moreover, under the Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana, farmers are compensated when they receive lower market prices for vegetables and other crops," he said. The chief minister said that families with an annual income of less than Rs 1.80 lakh are being provided cooking gas cylinders at a subsidised rate of Rs 500 per cylinder. Around 18 lakh families across the state are currently benefiting from this scheme, he said. Similarly, under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh is being provided to eligible citizens. For senior citizens above 70 years of age, the treatment coverage has been extended up to Rs 10 lakh. The state government has released Rs 6 crore for this scheme. He further added that kidney patients are now receiving free dialysis services in government hospitals.

Over Rs 500 crore dues in Haryana: IMA warns suspension of Ayushman Bharat treatment
The Indian Medical Association (IMA), representing nearly 600 private hospitals empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in Haryana, has warned suspension of treatment under the scheme from August 7 if dues amounting to Rs 500 crore are not cleared. In a letter addressed to Ayushman Bharat Haryana CEO Sangeeta Tetarwal, the IMA said, 'It will not be possible for these hospitals to continue with Ayushman services from August 7 unless all payments (pending as on July 15) are cleared by that time. The responsibility of any inconvenience caused to the poor people of Haryana will lie completely on the shoulders of the Haryana government which is neither providing adequate budget nor smoothening the process of this scheme.' According to officials, every month, bills worth Rs 80-90 crore from the private hospitals are raised in lieu of treatment under the scheme. The association expressed frustration over repeated delays, citing previous assurances from top officials. 'Time and again we have been apprising officials of regular payments, at times delayed by 4-5 months. In our meeting with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on January 8 this year, we were assured that all payments will be made in 15 days. We again had a high-level meeting with the Chief Principal Secretary to the CM Rajesh Khullar on February 3 and we were assured that things will be streamlined after March 10.' However, the IMA alleged that none of these promises have materialised. 'Payments are still much delayed and irregular, unnecessary deductions are still being made. Processing of cases is also delayed, grievances are difficult to raise on the portal and NABH (national accreditation board for hospitals & healthcare) incentive of many hospitals has been cut under the guise of re-employment on the new portal.' This is not the first time the IMA has raised the alarm. In January, it had threatened to suspend services from February 3 over Rs 400 crore dues. IMA Haryana president Dr Mahaveer P Jain said, 'That time almost all payments were cleared. There is a budgetary provision of only Rs 750 crore for this scheme which is insufficient and it must be increased to over Rs 2,000 crore to ensure timely payments to the private hospitals.' Responding to the concerns, Director General (Health Services) Dr Manish Bansal said, 'We procure payments from the government for these hospitals on a quarterly basis. For dues of private hospitals, we have already sent the demand to the government. As soon as we get it, it would be disbursed to the private hospitals immediately.' A senior officer said that the state government has sanctioned Rs 224 crore for distribution to hospitals against claims. 'The rest will also be cleared soon,' he said. Lok Sabha MP Kumari Selja has also urged the Chief Minister to intervene. 'This scheme is a lifeline for the poor, and its suspension could trigger a health crisis in the state.'
