Washington, D.C., reportedly set to host 2027 NFL Draft as Commanders prepare to return to the city

Yahoo05-05-2025

The NFL Draft is headed to the nation's capital.
The league is set to announce Washington, D.C., will host the NFL Draft in 2027, according to Axios and The Washington Post's Mark Maske. The announcement is expected to come Monday at the White House, when commissioner Roger Goodell and Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris will meet with President Donald Trump.
Specifics of the draft are not yet known, though Axios reported Sunday night the hope is to actually host the draft on the National Mall.
The decision to hold the draft in D.C. comes a week after the Commanders unveiled plans to return to the city and the RFK campus they used to play at for decades. The team is set to build a new stadium that will hold approximately 65,000 people and include a roof. The goal is to have the stadium, which will drastically improve the Commanders' chances of hosting a Super Bowl, open by 2030.
The Commanders won three Super Bowls when they used to play at RFK Stadium. The team left for Landover, Maryland, before the 1997 season. RFK Stadium has not been used since 2017, and D.C. gained control of the land in December — which helped lead to the Commanders' deal to return to the site. The team is expected to invest about $2.7 billion into the stadium, though the move has yet to be approved by the D.C. Council.
The NFL Draft was held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, last month for the first time in history. The draft was previously held in New York for decades before moving around again in 2015. More than 600,000 fans attended the draft over the three days this spring, which is among the most attended drafts in history and roughly double the population of the Green Bay metropolitan area.
Pittsburgh is set to host the NFL Draft next year. Denver also submitted a bid to host the draft in 2027. With D.C. getting the nod instead, the Broncos will likely be high on the list in the near future.

Chiefs' Andy Reid Gets Prestigious Ranking

Chiefs' Andy Reid Gets Prestigious Ranking originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Patrick Mahomes got blown out in a Super Bowl and, sure, Travis Kelce is coming off a career-worst season and is a descending player. But, according to most NFL analysts, the Kansas City Chiefs remain favorites to get to this year's Super Bowl for one reason: Advertisement Andy Reid. Pro Football Focus this week named Reid as the league's best head coach heading into the 2025 season. After going 15-2 in the regular season (15-1 when trying to win) and returning to the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season, Reid is a slam dunk at this point. "Like Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and the New England Patriots teams before them, the Kansas City Chiefs are the masters of situational football," PFF writes. "The Chiefs played in 12 one-score games last season, including the playoffs, and won all of them. They found a way to reach the Super Bowl for the third straight season because Andy Reid has his entire team prepared for any situation." Because of the return of Pete Carroll (74 in September) to the NFL as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, the 67-year-old Reid is no longer the NFL's oldest head coach. But he remains the best. Advertisement He has won three Super Bowls, been named NFL Coach of the Year and has 273 career regular-season victories, trailing only Belichick (302), George Halas (318) and Don Shula (328). Super Bowl performer arrested after disrupting halftime show with ‘Free Gaza' flag

A New Orleans man who allegedly did an unauthorized demonstration during Kendrick Lamar's halftime show at this year's Super Bowl has been arrested in the Big Easy, weeks after he was allegedly shot by former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown. Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, 41, a hired halftime performer, turned himself in to Louisiana State Police on Thursday after a warrant was issued for his arrest, according to a police news release. An investigation into the Super Bowl incident found that while Nantambu was permitted to be on the field during the performance, he 'deviated from his assigned role, retrieved a Sudanese flag bearing the message 'Sudan and Free Gaza,' and disrupted the halftime show by running across the field with the flag.' Security and law enforcement personnel ran after Nantambu, and he refused to comply with their commands to stop, police said. He now faces charges of resisting an officer and disturbing the peace by interruption of a lawful assembly. In addition to the ongoing criminal case, Nantambu has also been banned from attending any NFL games or events, the league confirmed on Thursday. 'We commend the Louisiana State Police for its diligence and professionalism in this matter,' the NFL said in a statement. 'We take any attempt to disrupt any part of an NFL game, including the halftime show, very seriously and are pleased this individual will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.' In a separate case, Nantambu is listed as the victim of a May 17 shooting outside a celebrity boxing event in Miami. According to Miami's CBS affiliate, a bullet grazed Nantambu's neck when Antonio Brown, who was attending the event, allegedly grabbed a handgun from a security worker and fired two shots at Nantambu. The 36-year-old star athlete, best known for his decade-plus run with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is facing an attempted murder charge.

Cam Newton, Marshawn Lynch coach up current NFL players on personal branding

LOS ANGELES — Former NFL MVP Cam Newton has certainly not faded into the sunset after his playing days. Through content creation and provocative discussion on his social media channels, Newton has developed a second career after football. And at the NFL's annual Player Personal Branding and Social Workshop this week in Los Angeles, the former Heisman Trophy winner and Super Bowl quarterback encouraged current players to take a similar path. "Use [football] as a tool, not as oxygen," Newton told young NFL players during a breakout session. "It's cool, but once you've leveraged your access and leveraged who you are, that can pay you dividends for years to come." Now in its sixth year, the two-day event offers players insight on entrepreneurship, securing partnerships, getting the most out of social media and other ways to build their brand while still playing in the league. YouTube, which has a partnership with the NFL and will broadcast its first live game this season, hosted the second day of the seminar at the company's facility in Playa Vista. Kim Larson, global head of creators and gaming for YouTube, hammered home the importance of players finding their voice, building relationships and using the resources available to them. Tracy Perlman, senior vice president of player operations, said the NFL partnered with former NFL receiver Larry Fitzgerald to create an event that teaches skills to help players brand themselves during and after their careers. In addition to Fitzgerald, other former players who spoke include burgeoning media creators and TV personalities Ryan Clark, Jason McCourty and Marshawn Lynch, who was not necessarily a willing interview subject during his playing career. "If you're a current player in your first, second or third year, you start thinking about what I aspire to do after football and then try out those things through the programs that we have," Perlman said. "And if you're a veteran on the back end, now you have to start pinpointing, and what does that mean? And how does that impact who you are on the field? "The more you start to let people know who you are while you are playing or as you start transitioning out, the more people are going to start to look for your content, look for your story and follow you as you are doing that." One player on that road is veteran New Orleans Saints tight end Juwan Johnson, who has 161,000 followers on Instagram and posts regularly about his family life. "When I first got into social media, you're really kind of lost," Johnson told me. "You're trying to see where you can fit in, where you can help. Honestly, I think it's about really finding my way, how I can represent myself and my family — me being a father and being a football player, because you're also representing a team. So, handling myself on the football field and off the football field is the biggest thing. Being here gives you the tools, but also the access they have to help us out." Entering his second NFL season, Chicago Bears receiver Rome Odunze was an active participant during breakout discussions as he learns to navigate new spaces on social media. "There's a great opportunity here with what the NFL is doing for us with this workshop," Odunze told me. "So I'm just trying to make the most of it. There's so many avenues and spaces that you can step into within this realm. I'm just trying to learn how I want to approach it." Eric D.
