War 2 advance booking opens on disastrous note in US: Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR film fails to sell a ticket for many shows

Hindustan Times2 days ago
Over 10 days ahead of its release, the advance booking for YRF's upcoming spy thriller War 2 began in the overseas market. US was the first place where the YRF Spy Universe film started its pre-sales for tickets, looking to bank upon the star power of its two leads - Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. However, the start has not been what Yash Raj Films had hoped. War 2 is a YRF Spy Universe film that stars Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR.
War 2 premiere shows in the US
Almost a day after pre-sales were opened in the US for War 2, the Telugu version seems to have picked up some pace, but the Hindi version is lagging far behind. A look at some of the major ticketing platforms like Movie For Tickets shows that most of the big theatres screening the Hindi version have not sold a single ticket for the Wednesday premieres. As per trade sources, YRF is releasing War 2 (Hindi) in 900 screens in the US for paid previews. Telugu 360 reported that as of Sunday morning, only 1600 tickets have been sold across those 900 locations, meaning many of the halls are empty.
War 2 premiere shows in the US have seen low turnout in the Hindi version (left) but decent occupancy for the Telugu version (right).
This could largely be due to an absence of paid preview and Wednesday premiere culture in Hindi cinema, where even fans prefer to watch the film on the first day or first weekend itself. The premiere shows are a rage down south, particularly in Tamil and Telugu cinema, where these shows get good numbers for films featuring the bigger stars.
HT has reached out to YRF for a comment on the advance booking trends, but is yet to get a response. The article will be updated if a response is provided.
Telugu version fares better
Naturally then, the Telugu version is doing much better, banking on Jr NTR's star power. The shows for War 2 (Telugu) already show decent occupancy, and as per reports, the collections have crossed $100k in the US for the Wednesday premiere for this version. However, trade experts note that this, too, is lower than expectations. War 2 needs to cross $1 million in Telugu pre-sales alone to justify its scale of release in the US.
All about War 2
War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, is a sequel to the 2019 blockbuster War. The film sees Hrithik reprise his role as the superspy Kabir, with Jr NTR joining him as another Indian spy, who is at loggerheads with him. The film also stars Kiara Advani. Part of the YRF Spy Universe, War 2 is releasing on August 14 for the Independence Day weekend.

'40-year-old actor insecure by Saiyaara's success': Komal Nahta says star's face fell at Bhushan Kumar's party after hearing verdict for Ahaan Panday's film

Veteran film journalist Komal Nahta spoke about a recent article that he wrote about the industry's reaction and response to the blockbuster hit Saiyaara. Starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, the movie emerged as a massive hit that many from the industry didn't see coming. But, Nahta said that all signs were pointing in the direction of a grand success. He mentioned his interaction with a star at producer Bhushan Kumar's party, where he declared Saiyaara to be a 'blockbuster'. He said that the star's face fell. He also spoke about writing an article about a '40-year-old actor who is insecure about Saiyaara's success', and swore that he didn't make it up. In a chat with Faridoon Shahryar on YouTube, Nahta was asked about his article. He said, 'I didn't take the actor's name so as not to embarrass them. But whatever I wrote, that he is spending sleepless nights, that he is constantly on calls asking if the numbers are accurate, every word of that article is genuine, I swear. The only detail that I have misrepresented is the number of films that person has done, but only to save them from embarrassment.' Also read – Saiyaara actor was Rs 2 crore in debt, relied on family's support during bankruptcy: 'Didn't have enough money for survival' Recalling his interaction with an actor at Bhushan Kumar's party, he continued, 'I wrote the article not to make fun of that person, but just to tell the world how insecure this industry really is. Even an established star can become insecure because of a newcomer. They have to remember that they were also newcomers once upon a time, they shouldn't be nervous; there's enough space for everyone. I was at Bhushan Kumar's party, and one of his stars asked me about Saiyaara. I told him that it's a blockbuster. He got up and left.' He said that he gets phone calls from directors and producers on Fridays, and all that everybody wants to hear is that the new film in theatres isn't any good. If he praises the film, they excuse themselves, but if he criticises it, they have a long conversation. 'At least 20 people called me after Saiyaara, and expressed shock about its opening. But I told them that it was guaranteed; they weren't paying enough attention to the promotions,' Nahta said. Saiyaara announced itself as a hit from the first day of its release. The romantic drama has made a stunning Rs 485 crore at the worldwide box office so far, emerging as the second-biggest Hindi film of the year. It has particularly been hailed for reviving the romance genre, and for doing it with newcomers.

Dhanush, Mrunal Thakur To Keep Their 'New Relationship' Low-Key, Love Story Revealed

Last Updated: Reportedly, Mrunal Thakur's busy schedule down South is what brought her and Dhanush together. Speculations are rife that South star Dhanush and Mrunal Thakur are dating. Recently, the actors were spotted at the premiere of the latter's latest release, Son Of Sardaar 2. Prior to this, Mrunal's presence at the wrap party of Dhanush's upcoming Hindi film, Tere Ishq Mein, also raised eyebrows. And as per a post on Reddit, the duo even has a joint playlist on Spotify. Seems like there's no smoke without fire and now, News18 Showsha has some exclusive scoop on the alleged lovebirds! Reportedly, Mrunal's busy schedule down South is what brought her and Dhanush together. A well-placed source tells us, 'Yes, it's true that they are dating. But it's too new and they've no plans of making their relationship official before the public or the media. At the same time, they're unfazed about going out and about and being spotted. Friends are truly rooting for them as they're quite similar and compatible when it comes to their values, choices and thoughts." The source further adds, 'The success of Sita Ramam opened doors for Mrunal in the South film industry. She has simultaneously been working in Mumbai too. Mrunal, who is currently shooting for Dacoit: A Love Story with Adivi Sesh, keeps shuttling between Mumbai and Hyderabad, and it's during an event down south where she met Dhanush." The friendship, reportedly, blossomed into something deeper and now, they're in love. The source goes on to state that Mrunal and Dhanush's closeness and bond caught the eyes of onlookers even during the premiere of Kajol's last theatrical release, Maa, in June in Mumbai. Further, Dhanush's name in Mrunal's guest list at the time of the premiere of Son Of Sardaar 2 cemented the speculations. If this is true, it would be interesting to see if these alleged lovebirds will be sharing screen space in a film soon. On a related note, Mrunal has never publicly spoken about any of her relationships. A while ago, rumour mills were abuzz with stories that the Love Sonia and Super 30 actor is dating rapper Badshah. However, he denied these reports by taking to his Instagram stories and stating, 'Dear internet, sorry to disappoint you yet again, but jaisa aap soch rahe hain, waisa nahi hai (sic)." As for Dhanush, he was previously married to Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth for 18 years before they announced their separation in 2022. They officially filed for divorce in April 2024 and were legally granted separation in November that year. The former couple met on the set of his 2003 film, Kadhal Kondaen. They share two sons – Yatra and Linga. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
