American woman living in the UK reveals Brits have called her 'rude' for her typical US habits

Daily Mail16-05-2025

An American woman living in the UK has revealed the normal habits in the US that would be considered 'rude' in the UK.
The woman, who goes by @ yorkshireyank on TikTok, often speaks about the cultural differences between the two countries.
She says that it is deemed normal for American citizens to give tours of their houses to guests, showing them where they cook, do laundry and relax in their spare time.
'This is something that I have personally been privy to and I've personally been walked around people's homes,' she said.
'It's just weird and it would be considered rude in this country (the UK).'
She then went on to say that is common for waiters and waitresses to take a customer's debit card away from when paying a bill in a restaurant.
'For about a period of five to ten minutes, you have no idea where your card has been, who has touched it and what has happened to your card in that timeframe, she added.
'In the UK, that just doesn't happen.
'They bring the credit card reader to your table and then they do it right in front of you, so there is no chance of anyone skimming your credit card.'
The woman, who lives in Yorkshire, said that there is a big difference between table manners in the US compared to the UK.
'A lot of Americans will say that they know their table manners but you don't them like the Brits do, so let's agree to disagree,' she said.
The content creator said that people generally find Americans to be louder than Brits and believes it comes down to the difference in tone.
'I think it's because our accent just carries but sometimes being loud is considered rude,' she said.
But sometimes being loud is considered rude because you'll be sitting on a train and the first thing you can hear are these American accents. You can hear us before you can see us.'
The last point that the TikToker noted was that manners and said that those from the UK will typically say 'thank you' much more than Americans do.
'Now there are some Americans who will say thank you for everything but there is a large chunk of Americans who will go into a store and say "Hey, where's the flour?" not intending to be rude, when in fact, the Brits will see it as rude.
'All you should just be saying is "Please can you tell me where the flour is?" These are just a few of the differences.'
Many people commented their thoughts on the TikTok video with some saying that they would enjoy a house tour
The woman then asked for commenters to reveal some of the differences they had noticed between how people carry themselves in the States versus the UK.
One wrote: 'I'm so nosy so I'd love a house tour.'
Another said: 'Whistling to get the bar staff's attention is a big no no in England.'
A third penned: 'House tours when you've just moved in is normal.'

Naga Munchetty tells how she has always 'hated seeing people bullied' - after she too faced complaint amid probes into BBC Breakfast culture

Naga Munchetty has said she 'hated' to see people bullied at school after it was revealed she allegedly bullied a junior staffer on BBC Breakfast last year. In an interview days before the allegations against her resurfaced, the presenter, 50, had said she battled against rude comments made about her appearance and talent. The TV and radio host from south London said: 'I was no angel but I hated seeing people bullied. 'I remember there were a couple of kids in school who were bullied and I just hated it. 'So I'd always kind of be that person who would speak to everyone.' Speaking on the Walking The Dog With Emily Dean podcast she explained that she confronts people that upset her at work. The presenter, who is already at the centre of BBC Breakfast 's toxicity row, was reportedly spoken to by bosses over a sex jibe she made while off-air at BBC Radio 5 Live. This comes as BBC Breakfast finds itself at the centre of a bullying and misconduct probe, with editor Richard Frediani taking an extended period of leave after an internal review of the allegations was opened into the show. According to The Sun, Naga used a slang term for a sex act during an off-air break. In an interview days before the allegations against her resurfaced, the presenter, 50, had said she battled against rude comments made about her appearance and talent The alleged remark in 2022 was said to have stunned the studio and led to Naga being spoken to by bosses. It was then reported that on BBC Breakfast last year, Naga was spoken to over alleged bullying of a woman. The BBC are now reportedly facing questions over whether there are 'double standards'. It comes as it was also reported that BBC Breakfast's editor Richard has taken an extended period of leave, after an internal review of bullying and misconduct allegations was opened into the show. It was previously claimed that the show's staff are feeling increasingly 'uneasy' around Frediani, with the former Head of ITV News accused of 'shaking' a female editor while working on the show. The Sun claimed that Richard has stepped back from the show, and while he had already taken time off to go on holiday, has mutually agreed to extend his break. Sources are also claiming that BBC bosses have held a series of meetings on how to handle the developing crisis. In an internal email obtained by the publication, John McAndrew, Director of Live and Daily News, thanked staff for their 'positivity' during this 'stressful time' - and informed them of Richard's decision. A source added: 'Fredi was already taking a break because obviously the allegations against him have been pretty damning, and he needed time to reflect. 'He's devastated by some of the claims and has also had a lot of behind the scenes support from colleagues, many of whom think he's a brilliant boss. 'BBC executives have ensured duty of care measures and he is still in touch with a few of the team. Right now, it's imperative that the BBC gets its house in order and ensures everyone is happy.' When contacted by MailOnline, a BBC representative said: 'While we do not comment on individual cases, we take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously and will not tolerate behaviour that is not in line with our values. 'We have robust processes in place and would encourage any staff with concerns to raise them directly with us so they can be addressed.'

Real Housewives star Dolores Catania reveals frightening health crisis that led her to have surgery

The Real Housewives of New Jersey star Dolores Catania revealed she was forced to have heart surgery after suffering from atrial fibrillation (AFib). Her condition is a form of arrhythmia, meaning her heartbeat had become irregular, causing her to have chest pains that began six months ago. Last month she underwent a cardiac ablation, a procedure that destroys the small bit of heart tissue that was causing the problem. Dolores, 54, went public with the news this weekend, posting an Instagram video that began with her boyfriend Paulie Connell driving her to the hospital. 'We are going to get my procedure done. It's a cardiac ablation for my AFib. I know, I'm too young to have this,' she quipped to the camera. As they emerged from the car and walked into the building, he asked if she had a 'last word' to say, to which she beamed at him and said: 'Love you.' She also posted photos and video of herself in her bed and gown, including one apparently post-op snap of herself grinning beside her electrophysiologist, whom she jokingly referred to as her 'other electrician.' 'About six months ago, I was driving when I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my chest that radiated down my arm,' she explained in her caption. 'As women, we tend to ignore aches and pains, brushing them off as part of everyday life- but this felt different,' remembered Dolores. 'After that, I started experiencing frequent flutters in my chest, sometimes waking me up at night. Eventually, I got scared enough to call my cardiologist,' she wrote. 'He gave me a heart monitor to wear, and within hours, he called to tell me I had AFib (atrial fibrillation). He referred me to an electrophysiologist, who confirmed the diagnosis,' added the New Jersey-born reality star. 'He told me, 'You're not the same girl I met two years ago when you came here with Paul.' Some of you may remember that my boyfriend, Paul Connell, was diagnosed with WPW (Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome) and also needed an ablation.' Dolores offered a word to the wise to her fans: 'I'm sharing this because I want you to listen to your body. That racing or fluttering in your chest you feel doing simple tasks during the day- that's your body trying to tell you something. DON'T IGNORE THIS. AFib increases your risk of stroke or heart attack.' She crowed: 'I'm not 6 weeks out and back to myself! I'll be off all medication soon, and I haven't had any episodes since the procedure.' Dolores urged readers not to 'wait' as their 'heart health is not something to take lightly,' adding that she 'was truly in the best of hands' with her doctors and encouraging her public: 'Take care of yourself you deserve it!!' She began dating Paulie four years ago after they met in line at an Apple Store, and the pair have been living together for the bulk of that time. Her surname comes from her ex-husband Frank Catania, whom she was married to from 1994 to 1998, during which time they welcomed two children. Dolores has publicly claimed the marriage crumbled after she discovered that Frank cheated on her during her pregnancy with their son Frankie, 27.

She teased the whole family went through a, 'really difficult, dark decade' but they were able to get through it. Miley revealed on the podcast that the family was able to mend their fences without therapy. Miley admitted she, 'had a lot of loyalty' to her mother Tish, who split with father Billy Ray back in 2022 after nearly 30 years of marriage and sharing Miley, Braison, 31 and Noah, 25. Ultimately, the singer, 'cleaned all that up,' during a, 'really important part of [her] year … putting those lines of communication back together.' 'I just kind of busted through the pile that stacked and just [went], "I'm here, you're here, let's start by having a good time together and then as we start bringing some happiness and joy into each other's life, then we'll be in a better place to have these conversations,"' she admitted. She also admitted it, 'was easier to wave a white flag' than go through counseling with someone else. The singer added she likes others to decide they, 'like the way she's functioning' and attempt to 'mimic' it. She will be addressing the family drama more directly on her forthcoming album, teasing that a song called Secrets. Miley said the song is about her wanting her dad, 'to feel safe enough to tell [her] the things that were damning and damaging to the family.'
