Madras High Court orders reissue of NTK leader Seeman's lost passport
Justice N. Anand Venkatesh allowed a writ petition filed by the party leader and quashed an order passed by the RPO refusing to reissue the passport. He pointed out that a Division Bench of the High Court had already held that the permission of criminal courts is not required to seek the renewal/reissuance of passports.
Individuals facing criminal cases would have to obtain the permission of the criminal court concerned only when they intend to travel abroad, the judge said and directed the RPO to process the petitioner's application and reissue the passport within a month if the application was in order otherwise.
In his affidavit, Mr. Seeman stated he had been facing motivated criminal cases since 2008 and yet, he had been visiting many foreign countries to meet the Tamil diaspora. When the RPO refused to reissue his passport with additional pages in 2013, he had approached the High Court and obtained a favourable order.
However, when he planned to visit some neighbouring countries in September 2024, he found that he had lost his passport. Immediately, a police complaint was lodged and a Lost Document Report (LDR) was obtained on October 10, 2024. Thereafter, he applied for the reissuance of the passport in November 2024.
The RPO on January 31, 2025, refused to reissue the passport, the petitioner complained and contended he was not facing any serious charges and there was no likelihood of him absconding or evading the course of justice. Mere pendency of a few 'motivated criminal cases' could not be a reason to deny passport, he argued.

Commitment to truth, authenticity vital as fighting fake news becomes a daily battle: Nirmala Lakshman
At a time when countering fake news has become a daily battle, commitment to truth and authenticity is the most cardinal virtue of journalism that needs to be practised, Nirmala Lakshman, Chairperson, The Hindu Group Publishing Private Ltd., said here on Saturday. Ms. Lakshman, who is the author of The Tamils: A Portrait Of A Community, was in conversation with Col. David Devasahayam, chairman and managing director of the Radiant Group of Companies, on the topic 'Re-imagining Tamil social fabric today' at the Radiant Wellness Conclave. To a question on social wellness and women, she said, 'Over the years, because of legislation, movements, and protests, there has been progress in terms of gender equality. But we have not really scratched the surface. Social and economic disadvantages still keep women in a much lower focus, both from the national point of view and from their own social wellness aspect. We have a long way to go.' She expressed concern over caste-based killings and violence against members of the Dalit community. On inclusivity and acceptance in Tamil Nadu, she said rural India was well exposed to the outside world. Several families honoured heroes they revered by naming children after them, such as Lenin and Stalin. 'It is a particularly wonderful Tamil characteristic to look at the world outside. It is not just about Tamil Nadu or Tamilians, contrary to the notion that Tamils are insular,' she added. Nine aspects of wellness In his keynote address, Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor spoke on nine aspects of wellness such as physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, environmental, occupational, financial and cultural. He expressed concern over the prevalence of obesity and diabetes, particularly among urban youth, and highlighted the negative correlation between screen time and mental health. In a conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt on 'Planetary care in crisis', Pasumai Thaayagam Foundation president Sowmiya Anbumani said though Tamil Nadu got enough rainfall, the State was unable to tap its potential due to inadequate storage facilities. She stressed the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and move towards alternative energy sources. During the conclave, veteran actor Shabana Azmi was honoured with the Radiant Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to Indian and international cinema.

PMK holds general body meet without Ramadoss; Anbumani to continue as president for one year
The PMK general body meeting, convened by Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday, resolved that he would continue as party president while , and other office-bearers, Vadivel Ravanan and M. Thilagabama would continue as general secretary and treasurer respectively, for one year. The internal party election will be held in August 2026. For the first time, the general body meeting was held without PMK founder S. Ramadoss, amid the ongoing stand-off with his son Dr. Anbumani. The meeting was held at Mamallapuram, after the Madras High Court dismissed a writ petition to restrain Dr. Anbumani from convening a general body meeting. It passed a resolution vowing to defeat the ruling DMK in the 2026 Assembly election. 'Talks on for truce' Dr. Anbumani spoke about the ongoing rift with his father, and said talks were under way for a truce. 'I have spoken to him [Ramadoss] for over 40 times. I spoke to him yesterday as well. Through family, relatives, and friends, the mediation is in progress. Dr. Ramadoss will agree [for a compromise] in the morning, but some jackals would play spoilsport in between,' he said. 'We both discussed jointly taking up the signing authority. Dr. Ramadoss agreed to it 15 days ago. But later, he said he alone would have the signing authority. I did not agree to it,' Dr. Anbumani added. He hailed his father as a social justice reformist, and a national leader, and said a seat had been reserved for him at the meeting. 'I am not a stubborn person— I always say, let's work together. I have no desire for the leadership post. If I had wanted, I would have taken it 15 years ago. I did not join this party for posts or responsibilities. My goal is to take society to the next level,' he said. 'I never imagined such a situation would arise. I am firm in my stand, but not stubborn,' Dr. Anbumani said, adding: 'We have now made it clear that the DMK should not come back to power. It is important to stick to that stance.' Resolutions passed Another resolution warned of protest, if internal reservations for Vanniyars were not announced. A slew of resolutions were passed, including ones demanding the conduct of caste census in Tamil Nadu, and condemning the DMK government for its alleged failures on women's safety, and law and order. Others sought full prohibition in the State, reinstatement of the old pension scheme for government employees, and a permanent solution to the fishermen issue.
