Music Review: Lorde enters 'Virgin' territory on her liberated, physical pop album
NEW YORK (AP) — Fans of the New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde have long commended the artist for her visceral pop craft. Her music, to certain ears, sounds like freedom. On her new album, it is as though Lorde is able to hear it, too. On 'Virgin,' the singer born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor's fourth studio album and first in four years, pop hits are devoid of any anxious filtering. She is raw. When Lorde first emerged as a gothic popstar — with 'Royals,' and its critique of celebrity culture and hyper consumerism — she did so with prescience. Her sparse production style and cursive-singing had come from the future, and its influence would be felt for many years to follow. Her debut, 2013's 'Pure Heroine,' suggested that she possessed something her contemporaries did not; the synesthesia synth-pop 'Melodrama' in 2017 all but confirmed her greatness. She took a step back from all that for the sleepy sunshine of 2021's 'Solar Power,' and then took another — veering away from the spotlight all together. It seemed that this outsider dynamo had distanced herself from fame in an attempt to centralize artmaking once again. (Later, as it was revealed in a 'Rolling Stone' cover story, she was mourning the longest romantic relationship of her life, making up the bulk of her twenties, and that she was overcoming an eating disorder and anxiety through MDMA and psilocybin therapy.) 'Virgin' was born after that period of reflection. Musically, 'Virgin' threads the needle from 'Melodrama' to the current moment. The lead single, the synthpop 'What Was That,' is a reserved derivation of her previous work but no doubt a banger; on the syncopated rhythms of 'Hammer,' she's matured her racecar-fast pop. There's a new malleability here. She sings, 'Some days I'm a woman / Some days I'm a man.' An album standout, the metamorphic 'Shapeshifter,' possesses a tension between organic and electronic sounds that continue onto 'Man of the Year,' with its bass and cello contributions from frequent collaborator Dev Hynes. Credit is due to her new production partners Jim-E Stack (Bon Iver,Danielle Haim) and Daniel Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo,Chappell Roan). Thematically, Lorde's never been more fluid and feral than on 'Virgin,' in her descriptions of gender experience ('Favourite Daughter') and sexual autonomy ('Current Affairs,' with lyrics that might scandalize fans not expecting messy eroticism. 'You tasted my underwear,' she sings, partnered with a sample of the dancehall record 'Morning Love' by Dexta Daps.) For a singer who has always performed physical pop songs, 'Virgin' is her most bodily work to date as well. Take, for example, the shortest song on the record, the vocoder-affected a cappella performance of 'Clearblue' — a play on the popular pregnancy test brand, and not the only place where motherhood appears on the album. (Fertility is another theme; the album cover features an X-ray of Lorde's pelvis while wearing jeans; in it, an intrauterine device is visible.) This is a new Lorde — a more self-assured artist, warts and all — but one that recognizes and evolves her sonic signatures. Now, like in the early days of her career, 'Virgin' is both avant-garde and pop radio ready, a confluence of unlike features that mirror its messaging. Only now, she sounds unshackled.

‘Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion' Shows Off Its New Heavy Armor
The newly revealed Heavy Armor in 'Titanic Scion'. In a new trailer for Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion, we get to see a much bigger type of mecha called Heavy Armor that is similar to the Arsenals from the first game. To make all of this a bit confusing, the smaller power armors we've already seen in Titanic Scion are already called Arsenals. That aside, the power armor in Titanic Scion can enter the Heavy Armor and 'pilot' it accordingly. This is actually similar to the setup in the first Daemon X Machina, except the pilots of those Arsenals technically lacked power armor (and I'm not counting the upgraded armor for the pilot as power armor here). It also seems that not only can Heavy Armors transform and fly around, but that their usage is limited, which gives me flashbacks to the first Lost Planet game on the Xbox 360 and the thermal energy-powered Vital Suits. In any case, this new Heavy Armor setup flips Titanic Scion on its previously powered armored head, and that is interesting, especially as there will be instances where you face down Heavy Armor in your power armor and vice versa. It also seems that the base character abilities are more fleshed out now, and that too will play a big part in the game. To be honest, the more that comes out about Titanic Scion, the more I'm on board with what it's doing. From everything I am seeing, it feels like this will be a proper evolution from the first Daemon X Machina, and that's a rare thing in gaming these days. FULL CIRCLE BOYS LEAP FORWARD WITH DEBUT EP JETÉ AND OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO "THIS GOES OUT TO YOU" -- OUT NOW
An evocative pop debut from a genre-bending artistic collective of vocalists, songwriters, and dancers breaking new ground in music. LOS ANGELES, June 27, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- After months of building buzz and a surge of online fan support that has attracted millions of views, Full Circle Boys officially debut today with their highly anticipated EP Jeté, now available on all streaming platforms. Simultaneously, the band releases the official music video for the opening track, "THIS GOES OUT TO YOU," on YouTube. Rooted in the dance community and built through years of artistic collaboration, the five-member group—Jagger Moon, James Herron, Sean Garrity, Dossan Bell, and Oliver Hincy—redefines what a pop group can be. With a focus on movement as much as melody, Full Circle Boys bring a fresh, cinematic, American edge to a genre often driven by convention. "This project is deeply personal," the group states in a joint statement. "Jeté isn't just a dance move—it's our story. We are finally taking flight from the studio to the stage, from freestyling in basements to writing and recording our music." Their debut project, Jeté (French for "to leap"), reflects their physical training and a creative philosophy: art in motion, stories told through rhythm, vulnerability, and form. The EP covers a wide emotional spectrum, balancing explosive dance anthems with hypnotic, introspective production. Behind the music is a collaborative team of top producers, including Tricky Stewart (Beyoncé, Rihanna), whose genre-defining production elevates the project's sonic goals. Other standout tracks are "SCREAM," written and produced by Dossan Bell, and "SUPERSTAR," written by Jagger Moon, which showcase the group's songwriting talent and unique viewpoints. They also released their recent hit single "M80," which earned over a million views in its first two weeks. The video for "THIS GOES OUT TO YOU" is directed and choreographed by acclaimed creator and ongoing Full Circle collaborator Keone Madrid (BTS, Justin Bieber). It's a visual statement crafted with complexity and a close-knit team on location. The film pushes the limits of traditional pop visuals, showcasing the group not only as vocalists and performers but also as artists unafraid to challenge expectations. "This video is a thank you to everyone who helped us get here," says Jagger Moon. "We wanted our first visual to reflect the heart behind the EP: movement, emotion, and gratitude." Jeté marks the first of several forthcoming releases from the group, teasing an expansive creative journey into what could be America's next boy band.
