'Dangerous drink-driver' who killed woman jailed
A "dangerous drink-driver" who killed a woman and seriously injured another has been jailed for nine years and three months. Hertfordshire Police said Razvan Balasoiu, 26, was under the influence of alcohol when his BMW ploughed into a Toyota Corolla on the A602 between Stevenage and Hitchin. The Toyota's driver, a woman in her 50s, died at the scene, while a woman in a third car was seriously injured. Balasoiu, from London, previously pleaded guilty at St Albans Crown Court to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The incident happened "in wet conditions" on 12 November 2023 at about 18:45 GMT. Police said Balasoiu failed to notice the road changing from a dual carriageway into a single-lane road and struck a silver Toyota Corolla travelling in the same direction. The force with which his vehicle, a black BMW 316i, struck the Corolla, caused it to spin out of control onto the opposite carriageway, where it hit a Hyundai IX35. The Hyundai's driver, a woman in her 60s, spent several months in hospital and police said she was "still recovering from the horrific life-changing injuries". Balasoiu was arrested at the scene and failed to provide a breath test at the roadside, only agreeing to a blood test hours after the collision, police said. Det Con Felicity Walker said it was "a tragic case". "As a direct result of Balasoiu's driving, which was at speed, in wet conditions, under the influence of alcohol, three families have been affected. "Drink drive and speeding are two of the fatal four, and we will never tolerate such reckless behaviour on our roads." Balasoiu was sentenced on Thursday. He will also be banned from driving for five years once he is released from prison. Follow Beds, Herts and Bucks news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. Ukraine drones attack on Moscow forces airport closure, Russia says
A Ukrainian drone attack targeting Moscow forced the closure of two of the key airports serving the capital, Russian authorities said early on Sunday. Russia air defence units destroyed nine Ukrainian drones heading towards Moscow by 0400 GMT, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on the Telegram messaging app. Emergency services were dispatched to the sites where drone debris fell in the overnight attack, Sobyanin said. He did not report any immediate damage. A Ukrainian drone attack also sparked a short-lived fire at the Azot chemical plant in the Tula region, injuring two people, and seven drones were destroyed over the Kaluga region, regional governors said. Both regions border the Moscow region to the south of the capital. Reuters could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Russia's civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia said on Telegram that to ensure air safety it was halting flights at the Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports. Russia and Ukraine have increased their attacks in recent weeks while also returning to peace talks for the first time since the early days of the war that Russia launched against Ukraine in February 2022.

Man drives into a crowd in Germany's Passau, injuring several
A man drove a car into a group of people in the southern German city of Passau on Saturday, injuring several people, police said. Five people are being treated in hospital, including the man's wife, 38, and their 5-year-old daughter, according to a police spokesman. The severity of their injuries was not immediately known. The incident occurred at 3:30 pm (1330 GMT). Passers-by alerted the police. Police detained the driver, 48, and have not ruled out that he drove into the crowd on purpose, though that is currently unclear. Police suspect the incident may be linked to his relationship, the spokesman said. "The criminal police are on site and have taken over the investigation," he added. In February, a car drove into a demonstration march in Munich. Two of the injured - a woman and her 2-year-old child - later died in hospital.
