Maharashtra declares October 3 as classical Marathi language day amid row
Amid a row over the three-language policy in Maharashtra, the state government on Friday issued an order to celebrate October 3 every year as Abhijat Marathi Bhasha Diwas (Classical Marathi Language Day). This decision follows the government's move to declare Marathi a classical language on October 3 last to a Government Resolution dated October 14, 2024, the state will not only celebrate the day but also observe a Classical Marathi Language Week, featuring various activities to promote research and public engagement around the language's rich government has clarified that the move aims to encourage deeper academic inquiry and foster pride in Marathi's classical legacy. Instructions for planning and conducting related events have been issued to departments and institutions at all levels. The announcement comes in the wake of backlash over the state's implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, particularly the controversial three-language April, the Maharashtra government issued a General Resolution declaring Hindi as the default third language for students from Classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English-medium schools. The policy triggered widespread criticism from political, cultural and social pressure, the government cancelled the order and announced the formation of a new committee to revisit the language policy. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis clarified that Hindi would not be mandatory, and students could choose any regional language as a third language. A revised order later said that Hindi would "generally" be taught as the third language, without making it tensions over the language issue intensified further when Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers allegedly assaulted a sweet shop owner after he claimed ignorance of Marathi being Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray reacted to the incident, saying emotions can run high when the state's identity is disrespected.'We want that our mother tongue Marathi is not insulted and no language is forcefully imposed. Opposition slams Eknath Shinde for 'Jai Gujarat' remark; calls it surrender of Maharashtra pride
MUMBAI: Amid the ongoing controversy over Marathi versus Hindi, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday fuelled another row by ending his speech with 'Jai Gujarat' in the presence of Union Minister Amit Shah in Pune. Before concluding with 'Jai Gujarat', Shinde did say 'Jai Maharashtra'. Lauding the efforts of Union Minister Amit Shah, Shinde ended his speech with the sequence: 'Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra, Jai Gujarat.' The Opposition slammed Shinde for allegedly surrendering Marathi and Maharashtra pride before the Gujarati BJP leadership and accused him of showing a slave mentality. They alleged that Shinde is working as a slave of the BJP and that his 'Jai Gujarat' slogan reflects this mindset. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended Shinde saying, the slogan was not against Maharashtra. He added that Uddhav Thackeray himself had said 'Jai Gujarat' during an event in Gujarat, and pointed out, "Gujarat is not in Pakistan. There should not be hatred against any community or state." However, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut lashed out saying, "Amit Shah's duplicate Shiv Sena has revealed its real face with Eknath Shinde's 'Jai Gujarat' slogan." Raut said Shinde's Shiv Sena is now "Shah's Sena". "How can this person (Shinde) remain in Maharashtra's cabinet? He should be sacked immediately for insulting the sentiments of Marathi people and Maharashtra," Raut demanded. Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam also criticised Shinde, saying that as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, he should not have said 'Jai Gujarat'. Maharashtra Congress President Harshavardhan Sapkal said Maharashtra is the land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's self-respect. He reminded that Shivaji Maharaj had once invaded Surat for Swarajya, but today, in his state, people like Eknath Shinde have mortgaged Maharashtra's pride to Gujarat.

"Nothing Wrong Done By...": Lawyer On Air India vs UK Law Firm Over Compensation
New Delhi: Legal experts from the US and the UK are leading the efforts to file lawsuits against Boeing - the manufacturer of the aircraft that crashed on June 12 in Ahmedabad. The AI171 crash was one of the worst in recent history, in which 241 people onboard the plane were killed and only one survived. Air India had announced that it would provide an interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh or approximately GBP 21,500 to the families of each of the victims and survivors of the airline's crash to help address immediate financial needs. This, it said, is in addition to the compensation of Rs 1 crore announced by its parent company, Tata Sons. However, families of the victims have accused the Tata Group-owned airline of "forcing" them to make financial disclosures under the "threat of receiving no advance compensation", even as the carrier "categorically rejected" the allegations and said efforts are being made to process the payments. 'Nothing Wrong Has Been Done' Speaking to NDTV, James Healy-Pratt, Aviation Partner, Keystone Law, London, who is leading the legal effort, countered the claim and said, "In my view, and having spoken with a lot of British families, I can see nothing that has been done wrong by Air India or their insurers." James Healy-Pratt and Owen Hanna from UK-based Keystone Law, along with aviation experts from the US-based Wisner Law Firm, are leading the legal effort. A similar case will be filed against Air India in the High Court in London. According to Stewarts, the UK's largest litigation-only law firm, families of the victims alleged that they are being forced to fill out a questionnaire "in intense heat with no guidance on the terms and questions within it". Mr Healy-Pratt, however, said He was in contact with the London lawyers for Air India and their insurers yesterday, and I made the same point. "Look, let's concentrate on helping the families process the a non-issue. There's no point driving between families and Air India. I mean, why would one do that?" 'Focus Primarily On Air India, Boeing' "The focus is primarily on Air India and aircraft manufacturer (Boeing) has had a checkered past over the last decade," he said. Mr Healy-Pratt pointed out the whistle-blowing issues that have surrounded Boeing for several years. "The Boeing 737-Max's, the deferred prosecution in the United States and billions of dollars of more importantly, it's the consensus among the deployment of Ram Air Turbine (RAT)...Now we don't know at what point, we are assuming it was probably just past the rotation." Ram Air Turbine or RAT - a small propeller-like device is deployed automatically when there is a dual-engine failure or total electronic or hydraulic failure. He said that there are 10 reasons for the deployment of RAT if we look at the Flight Crew Operating Manual (FCOM), adding that there are three primary reasons: Double engine failure, an electric failure or a hydraulic failure. He said, "That's bad news if you've just taken the question is what caused the RAT to deploy." The legal expert said the preliminary report will provide some indication about what added that there is consensus that there was a loss of thrust. The planned lawsuits would be separate from any other efforts Tata Sons, which owns Air India, might be making to support or compensate the victims' families, including financial help. The Montreal Convention 1999 establishes airline liability in the case of death or injury to passengers, as well as in cases of delay, damage or loss of baggage and cargo. Air India would need to fully meet the compensation norms of the Montreal Convention in financially supporting the families of those who have been killed in the crash.
