Telangana govt opposes Banakacharla agenda in upcoming CMs meeting
In a letter to the Centre, Telangana made it clear that it sees no need to discuss the Banakacharla project during the forthcoming meeting scheduled for the 16th of this month. Instead, the state has suggested prioritising discussions on pending projects related to the Krishna River. Among its proposals, Telangana has sought national status for the Palamuru and Dindi projects, advocated for the Ichchampalli project to be taken up by the Centre, and requested the allocation of 80 TMC of water for the Pranahita project at Thummadihetti. Furthermore, Telangana has proposed a new initiative to harness 200 TMC of flood water.
In its correspondence, the Telangana government highlighted that there have been no approvals for the Banakacharla project and that relevant laws and tribunal judgments are being violated. Consequently, officials argue that it is inappropriate to discuss the Godavari-Banakacharla link project, warning that such actions could undermine trust in the central government's regulatory agencies.
The meeting, intended to address the concerns of both Telugu states, will now take place at 2:30 PM at the headquarters of the Water Resources Ministry in Delhi, following a postponement from its original date of the 11th due to a lack of positive engagement from the Chief Ministers. Andhra Pradesh, meanwhile, has maintained its focus solely on the Banakacharla agenda for discussion. The Water Resources Ministry has requested both states to submit any additional agenda items for consideration ahead of the meeting.

Panneerselvam shifts stance, condemns BJP over Samagra Shiksha funds controversy
In a shift from his usual position towards the Union government, the ADMK Workers' Rights Retrieval Committee coordinator and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) condemned the BJP-led Centre for not releasing funds to the State under the Samagra Shiksha scheme for 2024-25. 'Citing this [the non-acceptance of the State government to the Union government's conditions] as the reason for not providing the funds will not only affect the education of students, but also teachers. This action of the Central government is against the Right to Education Act and federalism,' Mr. Panneerselvam said in a statement, adding that the non-acceptance was a matter between the two governments. The ADMK Workers' Rights Retrieval Committee leader urged the Centre to release around ₹2,151.59 crore to the State under the scheme. From ally to 'uncertain' partner Ever since Mr. Panneerselvam rebelled against the AIADMK's former interim general secretary V.K. Sasikala in February 2017, he had been known as a staunch ally of the BJP. When he and the present general secretary of the party Edappadi K. Palaniswami came together six months later, he had publicly credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the reunion. In 2019, when Mr. Modi filed his nomination papers in Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, Mr. Panneerselvam was among those who were there to greet him. Five years later, the former Chief Minister, who held the portfolio of Finance in the State government for about 10 years, contested as an Independent in the Ramaathapuram Lok Sabha seat unsuccessfully as part of the BJP-led alliance. But the AIADMK had faced the election only with the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and SDPI. After the Dravidian major revived its alliance with the national party in April this year, Mr. Panneerselvam's position became uncertain in view of a 'hands-off' approach of the BJP towards him, as Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah made it clear that 'we will not interfere in the internal affairs of the AIADMK,' when asked about the former Chief Minister's space in the alliance. The former Chief Minister had sought an audience with the Prime Minister during his latest trip to Tamil Nadu but no meeting took place between the two leaders, even though Mr. Palaniswami, along with his colleagues, met Mr. Modi at the Tiruchi airport on Saturday (July 26) night. On Mr. Panneerselvam's further course of action, Panruti S. Ramachandran, former Minister who has been an advisor to the former Chief Minister's camp, told The Hindu on Tuesday afternoon that 'when there is no place for him in the alliance, there is no point in continuing there.' Would the BJP not approach Mr. Panneerselvam again and take him back into its fold? 'There is no possibility, because Mr. Palaniswami is there in the alliance,' replied Mr. Ramachandran, adding that 'there is no way out for him [the Committee coordinator] than finding his own way.'

Operation Sindoor exposed Pakistan, told the world it sponsors terrorism: Amit Shah in Parl
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that Operation Sindoor exposed Pakistan as a state-sponsor of terrorism. He said that even though Pakistan attacked Indian civilian sites, India never attacked civilians in Pakistan. read more Home Minister Amit Shah has vowed not to spare those behind the attack. PTI Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said that terrorism in Pakistan is state-sponsored. Speaking in the Lok Sabha in the debate on Operation Sindoor, Shah said that Pakistan joined terrorists in the war on India and targeted Indian civilian sites, but India never targeted any civilian sites in Pakistan. In response to the attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam in which terrorists killed 26 people, India launched Operation Sindoor on the intervening night of May 6 and 7 and struck nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK). The next day, Pakistan responded by attacking India's military and civilian sites. In the four-day conflict, India struck a host of Pakistani military sites, including airbases and air defence systems, that forced Pakistan to request a ceasefire on May 10. India granted the request. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Shah said that Operation Sindoor had exposed Pakistan as a state-sponsor of terrorism to the world. #OperationSindoorDebate | HM Amit Shah: Op Sindoor exposed Pakistan globally — this is state-sponsored terrorism. Over 125 terrorists eliminated Pakistan had no choice but to seek peace. On May 10, its DGMO called India's DGMO — ceasefire agreed at 5 PM#OperationSindoor — News18 (@CNNnews18) July 29, 2025 Shah further said that evidence showed that terrorists who carried out the Pulwama attack, including those killed in an operation on Monday, were from Pakistan. 'Chocolates found on dead terrorists are made in Pakistan. We have proof that all three are Pakistanis. We have their voter ID numbers, and the rifles and cartridges used were made in Pakistan,' Shah said in the parliament. Shah went on to list the Pakistani airbases that India struck: Noor Khan, Murid, Sargodha, Rafiki, Rahim Yar Khan, Jacobabad, Sukkur, and Bholari. He further said that air defence sites at Sukkur, Lahore, Arifwala, Chunain, and Jacobabad were also struck. 'India's armed forces crippled Pakistan's defence systems, it had no choice but to request India to halt attacks,' Shah further said.

‘Our forces have evidence': Amit Shah confirms killing of terrorists involved in Pahalgam attack
Leading the government's charge against the Opposition during the special discussion on Operation Sindoor in Lok Sabha Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the three terrorists killed on the outskirts of Srinagar Monday under Operation Mahadev were the same who carried out the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack. Shah identified the three terrorists, who were killed in the Dachigam forest area, as Suleiman alias Faisal, Afghan and Jibran, and said they had come from Pakistan. 'Suleiman was a LET commander, and was involved in the Gagangeer attack. Our forces have evidence on it. These three were involved, and all three have been killed. Through this House, I thank the security personnel involved,' said Shah. The Union home minister said the Opposition asked a day before where the terrorists came from, where they went, and who was responsible, as he took a jab at Congress leader P Chidambaram. 'We are responsible because we are in government… I was sad that former home minister Chidambaram raised questions about the identity of the terrorists – where they came from. I would like to tell him that we have proof that they were from Pakistan. We have voter numbers too. These rifles are also there. The chocolates found with them are also manufactured in Pakistan'. 'They say they were not from Pakistan. This means that a former home minister is giving a clean chit to Pakistan… By saying this, Mr Chidambaram is also raising questions on why we attacked Pakistan… The former home minister asks for proof. This conspiracy to save Pakistan is exposed in front of 130 crore Indians,' said Shah. Referring to Akhilesh Yadav, Shah said the Samajwadi Party chief should not be upset after knowing the religion of the terrorists who were killed. The Union minister also gave details of what happened after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. 'They are saying only Rahul Gandhi went there. At 1 pm, the attack happened, and at 5.30 pm I was there. On April 23, a security meeting happened… The first decision was that those who were involved in the killings should not escape to Pakistan. And we made arrangements for that. On May 22, there was human intelligence, and information was received of the presence of terrorists… On July 22, we got success, and it was confirmed that these terrorists were there.' 'Yesterday's operation saw the death of three who killed our citizens… NIA had kept those who helped these terrorists in custody, and they confirmed that these three were the ones who conducted the terror attack in Pahalgam. We didn't believe this either. Cartridges recovered at the site of attack, were analysed, and a ballistic report was prepared. Three rifles were recovered yesterday – one M9 American rifle and two AK-47s. These rifles were sent to Chandigarh, and the cartridges were matched. Then, it was fixed that these three rifles were used to kill our people,' said Shah. The senior BJP leader also said six experts had verified the ballistic report on the cartridges. 'And they have said that they match 100 per cent'. 'Through Operation Sindoor, the handlers of these terrorists were killed. I will tell you how their bosses were killed. I had hoped that when this information is shared, there would be happiness across the board. Are you not happy that terrorists were killed?' asked Shah. 'I had gone there to meet the families… I would like to tell them all that through Operation Sindoor, all those who sent the terrorists were killed and those who came here have also been killed,' said Shah. Shah said the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Jammu and Kashmir Police 'made arrangements to stop their escape.' 'On May 22, one Bashir and one Parvez, who had given shelter to the terrorists… were arrested and kept in custody. They said on April 21, three terrorists had come… They had rifles… They ate and had tea and carried some food with them… The cartridges recovered were sent to Chandigarh FSL… The terrorists were identified… Three terrorists from Pakistan were there.'
