Delhi HC upholds Medha Patkar's conviction in defamation case
A single-judge Bench of Justice Shalinder Kaur rejected the revision plea filed by Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar, challenging a Saket Court's order that had earlier dismissed her criminal appeal and upheld her conviction.
Justice Shalinder Kaur observed that Medha Patkar failed to point out any procedural defect that would amount to a miscarriage of justice in the case, noting that her conviction was based on due consideration of the evidence and applicable law.
However, in a bit of relief to Patkar, the Delhi High Court modified the probation condition requiring her to appear before the trial court every three months, permitting her to appear virtually or be represented by an advocate. Further, it refused to entertain Medha Patkar's plea challenging the dismissal of her application to introduce a new witness in her defamation case against Saxena.
In 2001, Saxena filed two defamation suits against Patkar— one over allegedly derogatory remarks made during a television interview, and the other concerning a press statement. The legal tussle arose from an earlier suit filed by Patkar in 2000, accusing Saxena of publishing defamatory advertisements targeting her and the NBA.
In July last year, Metropolitan Magistrate Raghav Sharma sentenced Patkar to five months in jail and ordered her to pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation to Saxena.
On appeal, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Vishal Singh of the Saket Court upheld Patkar's conviction but ordered her to be released on probation of good conduct for a period of one year, subject to prior deposit of a compensation amount of Rs 1 lakh, which will be released in favour of the complainant (Saxena).
It had opined that an insensitive approach towards others' reputation and abuse of the right to free speech must be met with criminal sanction, adding that Patkar, being herself a person of repute, must know the value of one's reputation and how defamation can result in loss of face and public esteem of the victim.
Advocate Gajinder Kumar, along with advocates Kiran Jai, Chandra Shekhar, Drishti, and Somya Arya, represented L-G Saxena before the Delhi High Court.

NHRC calls for accountability in state governance
Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India concluded a two-day Camp Sitting and Full Commission Hearing in Hyderabad, addressing a total of 109 human rights violation cases across Telangana. The sessions marked a significant step toward institutional reform, sensitization of state functionaries, and collaborative justice delivery. Present during the proceedings were senior government officials, including the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and department heads. Deliberations centered on issues impacting women, children, and marginalized communities, as well as the strengthening of enforcement mechanisms and accountability in state governance. Of the 109 cases, 90 were heard in the open session. Key grievances included fire-related child deaths in hospitals, attacks by wild animals, stray dog threats, trafficking of tribal women, police excesses, denial of pensions, and lack of basic infrastructure. Notably, misappropriation under the Dalit Bandhu scheme and administrative lapses in Gurukul schools were highlighted as areas of systemic concern. The Commission's main directives during the two-day hearings include: Caste-Based Boycott (Khammam): Immediate end to discriminatory practices enforced after the NHRC's directive. Gurukul School's negligence has prompted the Secretaries to order a comprehensive report within four weeks regarding 48 deaths and 886 food poisoning incidents. The commission took cognizance of Police Misconduct, and the Telangana government was mandated to provide detailed documentation on wrongful arrest and the alleged lathi charge case. About the industrial explosion at the DRDO-linked unit, it has been ordered that Rs 50 lakh in compensation be paid to the families of the victims. Regarding the issue of stray dogs, authorities have been instructed to develop a standard operating procedure (SOP). Additionally, punitive action was taken against involvement in trafficking, leading to the dismissal of a constable found guilty of trafficking tribal women, who have since been rescued. Parallel to the hearings, NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian chaired a strategic session with state leadership, emphasizing timely compliance, systemic preventive measures, and multi-sectoral coordination. Chairperson Bharat Lal emphasized concerns regarding climate change, environmental balance, and businesses' human rights responsibilities. The issues discussed at the Full Commission Hearing include: crimes against women and children, child malnutrition and educational gaps, man-animal conflict fatalities, operational failures in the SC Corporation, grievances from farmers and fish seed producers, and the protection of LGBTQI rights. During the Full Commission session, 19 cases were examined, and a total compensation of Rs 49.65 lakh was recommended, of which Rs 22.50 lakh has already been disbursed. Additionally, 31 cases were closed, with 29 closed on merit and 2 closed after compliance verification. The NHRC also engaged with NGOs, civil society actors, and human rights defenders to forge pathways for joint monitoring and redressal. The Secretary General of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) emphasized the importance of collaborating with the State Human Rights Commission and encouraged citizens to submit grievances digitally through During interactions with stakeholders, several concerns were raised, including: Support for elderly and disabled citizens; Assistance for bedridden patients; and Delays in documentation and access to social schemes for children. Justice Ramasubramanian praised the contributions of civil society and reaffirmed the NHRC's commitment to uphold constitutional rights through fearless and impartial intervention.

Ramchander Rao slams Congress, predicts BJP surge in TG

Cops arrest man in Rs 1.98 crore online trading fraud
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Cybercrimes police have apprehended a 50-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh involved in a sophisticated online trading fraud, where he allegedly cheated a victim out of Rs 1.98 crore. Police arrested Aman Pal Singh. According to police, a complaint was received from a Hyderabad resident who stated that cyber fraudsters contacted him via Facebook. While browsing Facebook, the victim encountered a link related to alleged employees and senior advisors of 'Barclays Wealth Management' and 'UP Asset Allocation Z06.' These individuals invited the victim to join their purported companies, 'Private Wealth Management' and 'UPSTOX,' claiming they offered high-quality stock recommendations with significant profit potential. The victim was subsequently added to a WhatsApp group, where scammers guided him to invest in specific stocks, IPOs, and OTC (Over-The-Counter) stocks, which the victim followed in good faith. The invested amount, along with false profits, was displayed on a fake website. However, the withdrawal feature was later disabled. When the victim attempted to withdraw funds, the fraudsters demanded additional payments under the pretext of taxation and currency conversion charges, assuring him that only after these charges were paid would the invested amount be released. The victim ultimately lost Rs 1,98,25,000. The cybercrime police stated that Aman Pal Singh procures current bank accounts from his agents in Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi, which are then used in investment frauds. After these bank accounts are utilised in fraudulent activities, he would assemble with account holders and account suppliers at various hotels in Greater Noida, New Delhi, to disburse their share of the money as commission, based on the bank statements.
