Phillies Star Bryce Harper Announces Injury Update on Friday
Phillies Star Bryce Harper Announces Injury Update on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Philadelphia Phillies won both games of Thursday's doubleheader vs. the Atlanta Braves without star first baseman Bryce Harper, but they'd be in trouble if he missed extended time. The eight-time All-Star is slashing .267/.375/.450 with eight homers and 33 RBI through 54 games thus far, and his home run and RBI totals rank second on the team only to outfielder Kyle Schwarber.

Harper left in the first inning of Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Braves after getting hit near the right elbow by a 95.3 miles-per-hour Spencer Strider fastball. The 32-year-old sustained a bruise, but his X-ray was negative.
Harper updated the media about his status before Philadelphia's home matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, via The Philadelphia Inquirer's Lochlahn March.

"Bryce Harper said he's still 'super sore' and hasn't tried to swing a bat yet," she reported. "He doesn't think he will swing one today either, although he still hopes he will avoid a stint on the injured list."

'It's a really tough spot where it got me," Harper added. "So I just want to be smart about it, too.'
The Phillies own the NL's best record at 36-20, one game ahead of the Chicago Cubs and two ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets.
Philadelphia will host Milwaukee for the next three games before hitting the road to face the Toronto Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates. After that, it will return home to play the Cubs and Blue Jays again.
Right-handed pitcher Taijuan Walker (2-3, 2.97 ERA) will start for the Phillies on Friday night against Brewers southpaw DL Hall (1-0, 3.86 ERA).

Who's The Next Phillies Prospect To Get The Call? Maybe Justin Crawford
Justin Crawford could be the Phillies' next call-up from the minots. (Photo by Mike Carlson/MLB ... More Photos via Getty Images) It looks like the Phillies are ready to dig into their farm system after calling up pitching prospects, Mick Abel and Seth Johnson, on Sunday. Abel, who aced his audition on May 18 with six-shutout innings against the Pirates in a spot start, will get slotted into the rotation while Johnson could get high-leverage innings for a depleted bullpen that's gasping after losing Jose Alvarado to an 80-game PED suspension. So who will be the next Phillies prospect to get the call? How about Justin Crawford? The 21-year-old kid is peaking right now. In his last 21 games, Crawford is hitting .363 with 11 stolen bases. And overall against advanced pitching at Triple-A this season, he boasts a .338 average with 20 swiped bags while playing supreme defense in the outfield. Check out this sliding beaut: Crawford's skeptics, however, will point to an elevated ground-ball rate (63.8%) and his next-to-nil power (only one home run) as reasons to leave him in the minors. But Crawford, a former first-round pick in 2022, is hardly the second-coming of slap-hitting Juan Pierre. His line-drive rate at 22.7% is the highest of his minor-league career, and his max-exit velocity (110.7 mph) tops that of Phillies centerfielder Brandon Marsh (108.2 mph) for the season. In 2025, another facet to Crawford's game is evolving: his patience at the plate. He's walking 10.7% of the time, up from 6.1% against Double-A pitching last year, boosting his on-base percentage to an elite level at .407. Yes, it's a simple equation: Crawford's superior on-base skills + his blazing speed = immense value for the Phillies. Especially considering that Phils' outfielders are providing so little offense. There is a blockade to Crawford's promotion: The team has not one but two centerfielders in the Marsh-Johan Rojas platoon. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski must know neither Marsh nor Rojas is the answer in center and that Crawford could eliminate the need for a CF platoon if his unbelievable splits carry over to the big leagues. The left-handed-hitting Crawford is batting .306 against right-handers and .455 against lefties this season. And the kid uses all fields; check out this opposite-field flare: For the immediate future, it seems that only an injury to an outfielder would initiate Crawford's call-up. Or they could possibly demote reserve OF Weston Wilson to clear space for Crawford, but that probably won't happen because Wilson is one of the few right-handed hitters on the bench. But the Phillies are skidding, losing four in a row. And Dombrowski may figure out a way to get Crawford on the big club. When Phils called up Abel and Johnson, it's obvious the team wants to infuse the pitching ranks with some youth. And if they're looking to do the same with the lineup, it's easy to see the next move: Call up Crawford to provide a spark.

Indiana Fever's Newest Signing Involved in Previous Caitlin Clark Incident
Indiana Fever's Newest Signing Involved in Previous Caitlin Clark Incident originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever are in the midst of a three-game losing streak dating back to May 24, the final game played by Caitlin Clark before she was sidelined with an injury. Advertisement Clark, a second-year superstar out of Iowa, picked up right where she left off this season after winning the WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2024. But a left quadriceps injury will force her to miss some time — at least two weeks — and the Fever are certainly feeling the effect of her absence. As a result of Clark's injury, the Fever found themselves with fewer than 10 eligible players on the roster, resulting in the team making a move to bring in guard Aari McDonald via emergency hardship exception. This is a move teams can take with immediate effect if they drop below 10 game-eligible players at any time. Advertisement McDonald, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 WNBA draft by the Atlanta Dream, was a member of the Los Angeles Sparks in 2024. She averaged 8.7 points per game and played in 26 games last year — including one memorable one against then-rookie Caitlin Clark. After starting the 2024 season 0-5, the Fever picked up their first win of Clark's career on May 24 against McDonald's Sparks team. Two games later, on May 28, they met again, a game the Sparks won, 88-82. despite 30 points from Clark. In that game, McDonald, Clark's new teammate, appeared to take a special interest in the rookie. At one point in the second quarter, a clip of her face-guarding Clark all the way down the court went viral, perfectly portraying the attention teams were giving to the Iowa Hawkeyes alum for all of 2024. The Indiana Fever have signed former LA Sparks guard Aari McDonald following injuries to Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham and Sydney Lee-Imagn Images And then another went viral, where McDonald hilariously forgot about her second free throw after knocking down the first. Advertisement After making the first, she quickly located Clark to defend her up close from the inbound pass, only to remember she actually still had another free throw remaining. 'Got one more, Ari,' said the commentator in the moment. McDonald will now look to help the Indiana Fever bounce back from a three-game losing streak, attempting to keep the lineup in tact until the return of Caitlin Clark. Indiana hosts the Washington Mystics at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
