Texas A&M Softball powers past Marist with 17-4 win to stay alive in NCAA Regional
No. 1-ranked Texas A&M (47-10) eliminated Marist (48-9-1) on Saturday night with a dominant run-rule victory on day two of the Bryan-College Station Regional at Davis Diamond, securing their spot in the regional final. After an upset loss to a strong Liberty team, the Aggies rebounded in a must-win game, overpowering the Red Foxes 17-4.
Texas A&M's offense came alive, securing their fifth run-rule victory in six games. The Aggies struck first, scoring five runs to Marist's two for an early 5-2 lead. In the fourth inning, the offensive floodgates opened. Back-to-back solo home runs from Mya Perez and Mac Barbara kicked off the scoring spree, followed by an Amari Harper single. Harper later scored on a KK Dement double, and an Allie Enright double set the stage for consecutive sacrifice flies by Kylie Griffin and Kennedy Powell, extending the lead to 10-2.
The scoring didn't stop there. With two outs and a hit-by-pitch bringing in another run, Harper crushed her first career grand slam, giving Texas A&M a commanding 15-2 lead entering the bottom of the fourth. Marist managed two runs in the fifth, but A&M sealed the win with a Mac Barbara RBI single, plating two more runs for a final score of 17-4.
Pitchers Emily Leavitt, Grace Sparks, and Sydney Lessentine combined efforts to limit Marist's powerful lineup to just five hits and four runs over five innings. Lessentine closed out the game, facing only four batters in the final frame.
Texas A&M will now face Liberty in the regional final at 6 p.m. CT, aiming to force a doubleheader and advance to the super-regional.

WNBA Fans In Disbelief Over What Angel Reese Did in Liberty-Sky Game
WNBA Fans In Disbelief Over What Angel Reese Did in Liberty-Sky Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky entered Tuesday's clash with the New York Liberty looking to rebound from Sunday's lopsided 79-52 loss to the Indiana Fever. That blowout was compounded by the season-ending ACL injury to point guard Courtney Vandersloot and ongoing offensive struggles from Angel Reese, who finished the night with just four points. Advertisement Reese's season stats entering Tuesday were 9.1 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. While her rebounding remains elite—she's pulled down more boards than she's scored points, a rare achievement in the WNBA—her offensive efficiency has lagged, with a 30.9% field goal percentage, sparking concern from WNBA fans. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5).Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images However, in sharp contrast to her rocky starts in previous games, Reese exploded out of the gate to begin Tuesday's contest. She recorded seven points and six rebounds in a dominant first quarter. Among those points was a rare three-pointer—a surprise shot to many, given she's not known for her perimeter shooting, and had made just four in her WNBA career entering the game. Fans on social media quickly took notice: Advertisement 'WOWOWOW,' a fan posted. 'Ohh okay !!' another fan wrote. 'We need you to do this more often, Angel,' a third fan added. 'Angel Reese for three Abnormal happenings in New York,' another fan wrote. 'Angel Reese from three wow!!!' another fan said. "ANGEL FOR THREE?" one asked. Reese has faced criticism for her offensive output, yet this early showing against a strong Liberty defense suggests she may be beginning to address those concerns head-on. However, Chicago still entered the break down 52-32. Sandy Brondello Earns Coaching Accolades for New York Liberty
Sandy Brondello Earns Coaching Accolades for New York Liberty originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Staying in the hunt for another WNBA championship puts a lot of stress on New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello. After the season's first month in May, though, things are looking pretty good. Advertisement Brondello led the Liberty to a 6-0 start thanks to some stellar play from team members like Breanna Stewart. With this hot beginning, Brondello earned WNBA Coach of the Month honors from the league, according to the team's website. She's definitely made a name for herself around the WNBA. Brondello always has the Liberty ready to play, never missing chances to coach her team up when it needs to be done. Take a look at what Brondello accomplished in May. Those six wins landed her in third place in Liberty head coaching history. She now has the third-most in Liberty coaching history with 86 to her credit in four seasons as the team's head coach. Brondello, through May, was 86-36 overall with New York. Sandy Brondello earned fourth WNBA Coach of the Coach honor Besides those numbers, Brondello picked up her fourth Coach of the Month honor in her coaching career. It was her third honor while at New York. Advertisement Her team's play was something to behold in May. New York had a league-best 90.5 points per game, along with 23.5 assists per game, 30.3 defensive rebounds per game, 6.2 blocks per game and 11.2 3-point field goals per game. The Liberty also had a league-leading +16 plus/minus ratio. New York, in its May 22 contest against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky, broke the WNBA's all-time regular season record for most 3-pointers made with 19. New York Liberty Hanging Tough In WNBA Power Rankings
New York Liberty Hanging Tough In WNBA Power Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Trying to make some headway toward the top of the WNBA world right now looks like job No. 1 for the New York Liberty. They're still playing great ball early in the season, but so are the Minnesota Lynx. Advertisement New York is 8-0 in play right now, putting them firmly in the No. 2 spot in the latest WNBA Power Rankings, according to ESPN. It's not that Breanna Stewart and Co. aren't putting solid outings together. They are but cannot make any headway against early MVP favorite Napheesa Collier and the Lynx. Still, Stewart goes out all the time and gives 100% effort. In New York's lone game last week, where the Liberty beat the Washington Mystics 86-78, Stewart scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. It was her first double-double this season and, well, won't be the last. What about other Liberty players contributing to head coach Sandy Brondello's offensive schemes? Take a look at Kennedy Burke. She scored 12 points and was a hot 80% from the floor against Washington. Burke has put herself in some early contention for the WNBA Sixth Player of the Year award given out after the season. New York Liberty needs contributions from every player to keep on winning The Liberty dearly want to repeat as WNBA champions. They know that they have the players and team to make it happen. As long as Stewart keeps on rocking and the New York bench can pitch in, good things will keep on happening this season. Advertisement New York has a couple of games upcoming on their schedule. The Liberty hit the road to play the Chicago Sky on Tuesday night, followed by a home game against the Indiana Fever. Liberty fans will be disappointed if Caitlin Clark is unable to play. Clark has been dealing with a concussion lately, so her availability for that game remains up in the air. All the Liberty can do is continue to pile up victories, hoping it all leads to another ring ceremony for the team. The WNBA is in the middle of Commissioners Cup play at the moment. New York wouldn't mind getting that title, too. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 11, 2025, where it first appeared.
