Cambuslang Rangers boss staying calm amid strong start
Cambuslang Rangers boss Paul McColl isn't getting carried away, despite hitting the West of Scotland Second Division summit after a blistering start.
Three wins in as many games have the Wee Gers on nine points, top on goal difference over Bellshill Athletic, who have an almost identical record.
Saturday's 5-1 thumping of Bonnyton Thistle added to a 2-1 triumph at Larkhall Thistle on Wednesday, following their 4-2 opening win over Kilsyth Rangers.
Carlos Lyon bagged a hat-trick, adding to his double on Wednesday, with goals from Godson Nechi and Darren Jarvis – with McColl hailing the latter as an early goal of the season contender.
But McColl is keeping his feet on the ground, as Camby prepare for a derby trip to Blantyre Vics on Saturday, who themselves clocked up a 3-0 win at Maybole at the weekend.
McColl said: 'I'm not getting carried away, it's only three games, but it's a very good start, considering some teams haven't got any points.
'Nine out of nine is a great start, it's much better than last year. If you're not on your game you'll get beat, bottom of the league to the top, it's a tough league.
'We've managed to sign decent players, and we're a lot fitter than last season.
'We've got good goalies in and the strikers seem more settled.
'Carlos will always score goals, and Godson is a handful – he's just a monster, you don't want to be playing against him.
'You've got big Josh Watson at the back, who's 6ft 5ins, Shaun Roberts has been brilliant, big Kyle Stewart has been excellent, he was Lesmahagow's Player of the Year last season, and in the middle we've got Nadeem Zeb, Reece McAteer and wee Brandon Carmouche, who all run non-stop.
'It's great to watch, and I'm not getting carried away, because it's a long season, but it's a great start.'
On Saturday's win, McColl (pictured, below) said: 'I didn't expect that score. I wouldn't say I expected Bonnyton to be better, we just battered goals in and they struggled with that, but they're a decent side with good players.
'We just took our chances, and it was a great result against a decent team. We were 5-0 up inside about 40 minutes or something like that.
'In the second half the game kind of stopped a bit, and I wanted more goals, but I was at the side.
'Stevie Marsland and Jim Dick did were in charge and did well on Saturday.
'I thought the ref was pretty good on Saturday, he didn't flash cards or anything like that and used common sense.
'When you've got Carlos Lyon in the team you've got a chance of goals, and in Godson and Darren Jarvis – it's a front three that's very good.
'They're all scoring, Jarvis sets a lot up and he scored an absolute beauty on Saturday, a goal fit to win any game.
'He just hit it right into the top corner, and you won't see a better goal.'
McColl was also pleased with the Thistle result and said: 'To be fair, Larkhall had a few of their main players out, and I saw that – but so did we.
'We still have to go and beat them, and it was a good win down there, because it's a tough place to go.'
Cambuslang head to Blantyre on Saturday, and McColl expects a tough test.
He said: 'They had a great result, Vics went away and won 3-0, so well done to them."

'I should have stayed at Arsenal but I didn't trust the manager's plan for me'
David Bentley was handed his first professional contract by Arsenal but ended up leaving the club in 2006 because he 'didn't trust' Arsene Wenger, a decision he now regrets in hindsight David Bentley confesses he should have stayed at Arsenal but departed because he lacked faith in Arsene Wenger's vision. The Englishman went on to thrive at Blackburn Rovers before joining the Gunners' bitter rivals, Tottenham. Bentley joined Arsenal aged 13, and whilst he began life as a striker, he gradually retreated into midfield positions. He penned his first professional contract at 16 in 2001 and made his senior debut under Wenger two years later. Following a loan stint with Norwich City, his prospects at Highbury appeared grim. During the summer of 2005, Bentley handed in a transfer request and secured a permanent switch to Blackburn in January 2006 after a temporary loan spell there. Despite shining at Blackburn and ultimately securing a £15million transfer to Tottenham in 2008, where his career would falter, he acknowledges he probably should have stuck with the Gunners for longer but simply lacked confidence in Wenger. "When we were playing, you were under much more pressure than players are nowadays. Much more pressure," began Bentley, appearing on Undr The Cosh podcast. "Because, if you found yourself out the team, you were criticised more than you are now. Now, you're a squad player. Just having a rest, not in the squad today. "[I left Arsenal because] I wanted to play. I signed a five-year deal and left after six months! Wenger was like, 'No, do this.' He had a plan, didn't he? But I couldn't see that plan. Didn't trust it. "Potentially, I could have stayed; I should have stayed. Remember, I saw the young lads come through, Cesc. I made my debut with Fabregas - my full debut. "Absolutely unbelievable performance from him. We beat Wolves 5-1 at Highbury. He dominated the game at 15 years old. I was only like 17. Eighteen months older, or two years older than him." Bentley left Highbury in 2006 and quickly made his mark at Blackburn, netting a hat-trick against Manchester United in his first match after signing permanently, reports Football London. His contributions helped Blackburn in their UEFA Cup campaign that season, and he was honoured as the club's Player of the Year by fans in 2007 amidst rumours of a move to the Red Devils. In 2008, Bentley did complete a transfer, but to Tottenham, where he scored an unforgettable first league goal: a 43-yard volley in a thrilling 4-4 draw with his former team Arsenal. Bentley's time at Spurs was not fruitful, however, leading to a series of loan spells, including a stint at Russian outfit FC Rostov. The midfielder also played for Birmingham City and West Ham, and after a brief return to Blackburn in 2013, he was released by Tottenham that June.
