Cambuslang Rangers boss staying calm amid strong start
The Somervell Park side are top of the table after a perfect start to the Secon Division campaign Cambuslang Rangers boss Paul McColl isn't getting carried away, despite hitting the West of Scotland Second Division summit after a blistering start. Three wins in as many games have the Wee Gers on nine points, top on goal difference over Bellshill Athletic, who have an almost identical record. Saturday's 5-1 thumping of Bonnyton Thistle added to a 2-1 triumph at Larkhall Thistle on Wednesday, following their 4-2 opening win over Kilsyth Rangers. Carlos Lyon bagged a hat-trick, adding to his double on Wednesday, with goals from Godson Nechi and Darren Jarvis – with McColl hailing the latter as an early goal of the season contender. But McColl is keeping his feet on the ground, as Camby prepare for a derby trip to Blantyre Vics on Saturday, who themselves clocked up a 3-0 win at Maybole at the weekend. McColl said: 'I'm not getting carried away, it's only three games, but it's a very good start, considering some teams haven't got any points. 'Nine out of nine is a great start, it's much better than last year. If you're not on your game you'll get beat, bottom of the league to the top, it's a tough league. 'We've managed to sign decent players, and we're a lot fitter than last season. 'We've got good goalies in and the strikers seem more settled. 'Carlos will always score goals, and Godson is a handful – he's just a monster, you don't want to be playing against him. 'You've got big Josh Watson at the back, who's 6ft 5ins, Shaun Roberts has been brilliant, big Kyle Stewart has been excellent, he was Lesmahagow's Player of the Year last season, and in the middle we've got Nadeem Zeb, Reece McAteer and wee Brandon Carmouche, who all run non-stop. 'It's great to watch, and I'm not getting carried away, because it's a long season, but it's a great start.' On Saturday's win, McColl (pictured, below) said: 'I didn't expect that score. I wouldn't say I expected Bonnyton to be better, we just battered goals in and they struggled with that, but they're a decent side with good players. 'We just took our chances, and it was a great result against a decent team. We were 5-0 up inside about 40 minutes or something like that. 'In the second half the game kind of stopped a bit, and I wanted more goals, but I was at the side. 'Stevie Marsland and Jim Dick did were in charge and did well on Saturday. 'I thought the ref was pretty good on Saturday, he didn't flash cards or anything like that and used common sense. 'When you've got Carlos Lyon in the team you've got a chance of goals, and in Godson and Darren Jarvis – it's a front three that's very good. 'They're all scoring, Jarvis sets a lot up and he scored an absolute beauty on Saturday, a goal fit to win any game. 'He just hit it right into the top corner, and you won't see a better goal.' McColl was also pleased with the Thistle result and said: 'To be fair, Larkhall had a few of their main players out, and I saw that – but so did we. 'We still have to go and beat them, and it was a good win down there, because it's a tough place to go.' Cambuslang head to Blantyre on Saturday, and McColl expects a tough test. He said: 'They had a great result, Vics went away and won 3-0, so well done to them."

Cambuslang Rangers gaffer's half-time rocket sparked win over Kilsyth Rangers
The Somervell Park side started the season in strong style after their manager had a few choice words for his players Cambuslang Rangers racked up a 4-2 win in their West of Scotland Second Division opener against Kilsyth – after a half-time rocket from boss Paul McColl. The Somervell Park side were 2-0 down at the interval, but a Carlos Lyon double and strikes from Godson Nechi and Ben Kellington turned the game in their favour. They now prepare for a visit to Larkhall Thistle tonight , kick-off 7.15pm, and a home clash against Bonnyton Thistle on Saturday, with McColl pleased with their start. However, he wasn't so pleased at the interval. McColl said: 'I wasn't happy in the first half, it was pretty slow for us, but we came into it in the second half. 'They scored in two minutes, and they were up 2-0 in 10 or 11 minutes. It was just one of those where the ball just falls to the guy, then at the second it took a few ricochets and fell to the guy, who couldn't miss, and you're 2-0 down. 'The boy Danny McBride and Dougie Bell got injured. One of the boys didn't turn up, one was suspended, we were down 2-0, and Carlos Lyon misses a penalty, so you think your day's not going to be a good one! 'But we changed it a wee bit in the second half and ran over the top of them. That was as good a half as I had seen from us for a wee while. 'We're a lot fitter than we were last year and the boy Carlos got his couple of goals. He doesn't care if he misses, he just gets on with it, and he'll score if he gets a chance. 'Big Godson's good for a goal or two as well. 'It ended up being a good result. They're quite a new team, and they're good, they played football and they have a couple of really good individuals. It's a really good result.' McColl isn't happy that Cambuslang have a midweek game at Larkhall Thistle while others are idle, but will get on with it. He said: 'It's a hard game, they won 3-2 away at Maybole on Saturday, and I'm looking forward to it. 'It's always a hard game down there, but I think the last time we went there we won. 'We're back at home again on Saturday, so that's good. 'It was a good win at the weekend, because if you don't get something from your first game, you really need to get something. 'We still do, but it's a good start to the league, and hopefully we don't start on Wednesday like we did in the first half.'

Cambuslang Rangers give survival hopes a boost, but still face Clydebank sweat
Camby are a win away from ensuring they're not in the bottom three, but four teams may still drop down Cambuslang Rangers gave their survival hopes a major boost with a shock 2-1 win over title-chasing Muirkirk, but will still face a sweat to see if they stay up. Goals from Carlos Lyon and Fraser Robertson left Camby 13th in the West of Scotland Division, a point above Yoker Athletic, with three clubs currently going down to next season's Third Division. McColl's side visit mid-table Bonnyton in Saturday's league finale, while Yoker clash with a Neilston side that must win if they are to be crowned champions. That could leave the Wee Gers in a good position, but should Clydebank lose their play-off against East of Scotland club Musselburgh Athletic, that would leave an 'extra' club in the WoSFL, meaning four teams go down from each of the top three leagues. Clydebank and Musselburgh play for a place in the Lowland League on May 17 and 25, with a number of clubs waiting on the outcome. McColl said: 'It's a great result, and it has dug us out of a hole that we were in, because it means now that Yoker need to beat Neilston, who are a good side and going for the title. 'They will be out to win the title, while Yoker haven't won in eight games. 'But you just don't know what's happening with this stupid league. 'If we win or draw on Saturday, and Yoker get beat, and that confirms we're fourth-bottom, we need to then wait on Clydebank's play-offs to know what's happening, which is pathetic. 'After Saturday I want to say to players that I want to keep them for next season, but we can't do that, and players are players – within a week or two they'll leave. 'If we win, we'll be fine, and if we win by a decent score-line, and Forth lose a few goals and get beat, we could go above them.' McColl missed Saturday's win as he attended a family wedding, but was pleased with the report he got from assistant Stevie Marsden. Lyon had Camby ahead, Muirkirk missed a penalty, but levelled in 93 minutes – only for Robertson to add a clincher two minutes later. McColl said: 'They pulled that one out of the bag, nobody expected that apart from me and Stevie, because we have that many good players. 'To be fair to Muirkirk, their manager Ross Cusick, sent me a text to say 'well done', so I hope they get promoted. 'That was a bit of class.'
